April 2-5: Women in science, technology celebrated

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University will hold a series of events to celebrate women in science, technology and math from April 2-5.

Organizers of WSU’s first Week of Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) aim to inspire students as well as bring them together with professionals for networking, mentoring and professional development.

Events will include:

• The movie, “Hidden Figures,” about three African-American women mathematicians who played a key role at NASA in the early days of the U.S. space program, will show 8:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, April 2, in the WSU’s CUB Auditorium.
• A distinguished keynote address by Gerri Martin-Flickinger (’85, computer science), executive vice-president and chief operating officer for Starbucks, 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 3, in the CUB Auditorium, with a reception afterward. The lecture will also be LiveStream broadcast by WSU Global Campus.
• A panel discussion featuring women who work in science and engineering fields, networking and a dinner. The panel will be moderated by Professor Noel Schulz and LiveStream broadcast by the Global Campus. The event will take place 4:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 4, in the CUB Senior Ballroom.
• An American Association of University Women salary negotiations workshop 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in SPARK 335. The workshop will be broadcast to the urban campus sites (check AMS for room locations). Light refreshments will be served in Pullman.

All events during the week are free for students, with registration required for the Wednesday dinner and for the salary negotiations workshop. For more information see the Women in STEM website.

In addition, WSU Performing Arts will feature the play, “Silent Sky,” on March 30 and 31, as well as April 6 and 7 in the Jones Theater of Daggy Hall. The play is based on the true story of early 20^th century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt.  For more information see the Performing Arts website.
