Follow-up to Friday’s News Regarding Elson Floyd

Colleagues,

I am sure that, by now, you are aware that Dr. Floyd has requested, and been granted, a medical leave of absence to combat cancer. This is a difficult time for all of us at WSU as we recognize the seriousness of his illness. Please keep Dr. Floyd in your thoughts and prayers as he battles his cancer.

In the meantime, I want to pass along some clarifications about the administrative structure at WSU during the president’s absence:

  • Elson Floyd remains the president of WSU while he is on leave status.
  • Dan Bernardo remains in his position of provost and executive vice present.
  • Dan Bernardo assumes the duties of the president during Dr. Floyd’s absence.
  • Dan Bernardo remains in the position of provost so it is not necessary, nor appropriate, to appoint an interim provost.
  • The duration of Dr. Floyd’s medical leave is indeterminate at this point.

I want you to know that the university is in good hands, and the academic leadership will continue to move forward on the progressive agenda that Dr. Floyd had advanced. In the meantime, we have significant work to continue, and it is important that we do not lose sight of that work as we hope for President Floyd’s situation to improve.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
