From the Dean
Thanks to all for your feedback on last week’s safety memo that articulated our mutual commitment to providing a safe working environment.
This first memo, that stated that protective eyewear must be worn at all times while in a laboratory has resulted in much discussion. If you have questions, like, “Is this space a laboratory?” or “What if I am only using this space as a laboratory occasionally?” or “Where can I find ANSI approved safety glasses?”, please reach out to your department’s VCEA Safety Committee representative. Expect to see answers to frequently asked questions in next week’s newsletter.
Your VCEA Safety Committee rep will also be able to help you find a source for safety glasses and help to cover the costs of purchase if needed.
Thanks for your engagement and your support in making VCEA a safe and productive place to work.
Go Cougs!

On Sept. 26, an international team of researchers, including WSU’s associate professor Anurag Srivastava, performed a live demonstration of the Real-Time Super Lab (RT Super Lab) concept, which will study how electricity can be rerouted across vast distances to address disruptions. The team envisions that large-scale blackouts can be prevented by moving electricity intercontinentally, the same way utilities currently do regionally but at a much larger scale.
Dean Rezac and SWE President Keira Rust were guests on the Crimson Report podcast. Listen in (interview starts at 2:20).
Students Yu-Chung Chang and John Zender were featured in a Daily Evergreen article about the WSU 3-D Printing Club’s efforts to develop a recycling program utilizing Filastruder, a device that breaks down plastics into usable material for 3-D printing.
Spelling correction from last week: Luna Magpili, clinical associate professor in VCEA’s Engineering and Technology Management Program, has been recognized as one of the “20 Professors in Engineering Technology to Know” by OnlineEngineeringPrograms.com. The list is comprised of some of the outstanding professors and Universities in the field.
Safety Tip of the Week
Eye on Safety
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health reports that every day about 2,000 U.S. workers sustain job-related eye injuries that require medical treatment. However, safety experts and eye doctors believe the right eye protection can lessen the severity or even prevent 90 percent of these eye injuries.
Always make sure to wear eye protection when contact with hazardous materials is possible. Ensure your safety glasses fit properly. Eye size, bridge size and temple length all vary. Safety glasses should be individually assigned and fitted. Wear safety glasses so that the temples fit comfortably over the ears. The frame should be as close to the face as possible and adequately supported by the bridge of the nose.
