Nov. 7, 2017 Voiland College This Week

From the Dean

Dear Colleagues,

In the past two weeks, I’ve had the opportunity to visit with:

  • Faculty, staff, and students at the WSU Everett campus where Voiland College offers electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and software engineering degrees;
  • Civil and Environmental Engineering alumni, friends, and faculty at an evening event in Seattle;
  • Electrical Engineering and Computer Science alumni, friends, and faculty at their fall external advisory board meeting that was hosted on the Microsoft campus in Seattle;
  • Alumni and friends of the college at individual visits with past and potential future supporters of the college;
  • And, to attend my professional society meeting, AIChE, where I presented research results, chaired a session, met with my remaining graduate students and recent graduates, and networked with colleagues from around the country.

It was a great couple of weeks and the commitment of the greater Voiland College family to supporting the success of our students and programs was evident in each of these meetings. I feel honored to be allowed to represent the college in these activities.

There were a number of common themes that I observed over the course of the meetings include:

  • Demand for BS graduates is strong and expected to remain so for the foreseeable future.
  • Priority in offers to BS graduates is given to past interns with several companies indicating that more than 80 percent of their new hires are coming through this route. So, it’s incumbent upon the faculty and advisors to help our SOPHOMORES understand that the first large project they’ll face when they start their junior year is participating in the VCEA Career Fair and the other on- and off-campus events that facilitate acquiring an internship position.
  • Voiland is a complex college with students in five separate locations. The nature of the experience and, to a certain extent, the students, varies from location to location, but there are several issues which are consistent across the locations: the quality of the degree is outstanding; student learning and maturation is facilitated by industry-engaged project-based teaching/learning; student teams provide opportunities for independence and leadership skill development; and students who are successful in curricular and extra-curricular activities are sought after by industry.

My final observation is that we need to do a better job sharing success stories within and outside of the college. Our friends love us, but there is a non-trivial fraction of the population that simply doesn’t know who we are and what we do. So, we need to tell our stories. I need your help with this. Please, send in highlights and nuggets so that they can be woven into the larger Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture story.

The student experience is what makes us Voiland. Thanks for all that you do and have done to create the special environment of Voiland College that provides for our students and engenders continued support from our friends and industrial partners.

Go Cougs!

Safety Tip of the Week

Watch Your Step

Each year, 800,000 people are hospitalized due to a fall injury. This is especially true during the winter months.

Avoid walking on slippery surfaces, but if you must, take small steps, walk with your toes pointed outward, turn gradually, and keep both your hands free for balance. Wear studded shoe pullovers for walking on icy surfaces and use sidewalks that have been cleared of ice and snow.
