Safety Tip of the Week

Sit Tight

People who spend a lot of their day seated at a desk are prone to strains and other injuries related to posture and repetitive movement.

A few things you can do to improve your posture at work are making sure your ears are in line with your shoulders, doing small back and neck exercises at your desk, and try to stand up every so often to stretch.

For more safety information, contact Environmental Health and Safety at ehs@wsu.edu.

Facility Updates

Dana Hall 1st Floor Restrooms Update – Starting Monday January 29th

The Dana Hall 1st floor restrooms are getting a face lift. The renovations will update fixtures and also support ADA requirements (handicap door openers, new stalls including a stall that is ADA compliant, new sinks, toilets, urinals, paper towel holders, soap dispensers, and paint). To complete the updates, the restrooms will be out of service starting this next Monday, January 29th. The renovations are scheduled to be completed sometime in the end of April or early May. Regrettably, lockers will not be able to be reinstalled. If you have items in the restrooms, please remove them before next Monday. Lockers are available in both the men’s and women’s Dana Hall basement restrooms. While construction is underway nearby restrooms are available on Dana ground floor, as well as Dana 2nd floor, or in the EE/ME building. At some point water will be shut off to the Dana 1st floor faculty/staff/kitchen. Facilities Services is trying to limit the outage(s), and is planning to coordinate in advance through MyFacilities Event Notices. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the renovation. To sign up for Facilities Services notices please go to the MyFacilities Site , click on the Event Notification on the left hand navigation window, and follow the information provided.

Wayfinding at East Entries to Electrical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering

The East entries to EE/ME, on first and second floors, are getting a change in paint color and signage. (The East entry is on the side next to Spokane Street, with the connecting pedestrian bridge.) The project is to help building users visually differentiate between the three different building entries. Signage is being installed to indicate each interconnected building: Sloan, Dana and EEME. Building directories will follow later this spring. The EE/ME building hallways are also being refreshed with new paint (same color) as part of a Facilities Services renewal project, in partnership with Voiland College.

Furniture Updates in Public Areas

Voiland College, together with ASWSU’s approval of utilizing Student Tech fees, is updating several public study spaces with new furniture and digital collaboration tables. The areas being updated are open for all students to access. These areas include the basement and first floor hallway study nooks in EE/ME, as well as Dana 224 and 216. Some of the furniture has already arrived and been installed. The remaining furniture should be arriving, and/or the installations completed, in the coming months.

Wireless Installed in Dana

Voiland College, in partnership with WSU ITS, is extending wireless coverage throughout Dana Hall. The project includes adding access points to 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors. Where there is coverage on these floors now it is limited to two access points per floor. The limited coverage has left many users in the building frustrated with the lack of consistency in availability or performance, or without wireless access. The Dana wireless project is increasing the coverage to five access points per floor, akin to the coverage the Dana Basement has now. (Dana Hall does not allow for good horizontal or vertical wireless signal penetration so stacking access points is not effective, as it might be in other buildings.) The electrical work has begun and it is expected WSU ITS will complete their access point installations by mid-February. Once completed the installations will provide coverage to all Dana Hall building occupants. During the upgrade there may be times where wireless is interrupted. WSU ITS is planning to coordinate these outages in advance. Thank you for your patience and understanding during the transition.

Closure of College Avenue Until Repairs Made

Per WSU Facilities Services Event Notices, College Avenue will be closed. While the road is usually closed in the winter time due to the steep grade and icy conditions, there are additional problems with the tunnel conditions under the road, making vehicular traffic over the roadway unsafe. Pedestrian traffic is without risk. This will also require a partial closure of Columbia Street and Tacoma Street. Repairs to the tunnel lid will commence later this Spring when the weather allows, and the road will be closed until those repairs can be made. The repair timeline from Facilities Services notes the road may be closed through 9/28/2018. To sign up for Facilities Services notices please go to the MyFacilities Site , click on the Event Notification on the left hand navigation window, and follow the information provided.

New – Access to College Rooms Provided via Cougar Card

Voiland College has been moving its centrally utilized rooms over to Cougar Card readers in an effort to help provide users with faster and more convenient access. Previously keys had to be checked out for college controlled spaces, creating a hassle for many. Now users can get access to the spaces via their Cougar Card. These rooms include ETRL 101 (Voiland College Seminar Room), ETRL 103 (Voiland Small Conference Room), ETRL 119 (Voiland College Large Conference Room), and Dana 142 (prior Dean’s Conference Room). ETRL 117 (catering kitchen in support of ETRL 119) will be coming online in the coming month. If you don’t already have Cougar Card access, please note the following:

For future room reservations door access will be provided as part of the room’s reservation.

Please note the following information to add to a room reservation request:

  • Please include the name and contact information of the person(s) needing door access for the reservation in the message for the room reservation request. (How to reserve a VCEA room.)
  • When the room reservation is approved, door access will be provided as part of the reservation.
