For Your Information

Mandatory Accessibility Training

Did you know? Approximately 40 percent of the Web pages in the schools and departments within Voiland College are currently in violation of the federal government’s accessibility policy.

Ensuring Web accessibility on Washington State University websites is a priority and a policy that was endorsed and mandated by university executives in the summer of 2017.

To provide guidance and support for these goals, an online training program has launched for website coordinators, designers and technicians.

This training is required annually and is designed to give participants an introductory-level understanding of Web accessibility. It equips people the fundamental skills needed to make a WSU website accessible.

Who needs to take the training? All Web developers, content publishers, editors, domain owners, and anyone who has any other role in updating WSU website content. While this particular training is Web focused, it will help you begin to understand what needs to be considered when developing email (and attachments), press releases, posts for social media, digital displays, etc.

Take WSU’s accessibility training.

Multiple live and online resources are now available on the Web Communication website.

Leadership Opportunities

The Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture is excited to offer two new leadership positions for supporting its academic programs: the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and the Associate Dean for Student Success.

We seek two experienced and energetic leaders who will thrive on the opportunity to partner with existing engineering programs and lead efforts around curricular issues, accreditations, and student concerns. These 0.5 FTE, 12-month positions are the result of reorganization within VCEA and replace the current full-time Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs and Student Services position. The responsibilities for each position are articulated in the attached Job Description. It is understood that the precise division of responsibilities will be evaluated periodically and adjusted as necessary to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Please note the closing date of May 18, 2018.

Safety Tip of the Week

Upcoming Lab Safety Inspections

The EPA and Department of Ecology recently indicated that WSU should anticipate an inspection from them sometime this summer. Labs, shops, farms, and any areas that generate hazardous or universal waste will be subject to random inspection.

As such, faculty and staff in those areas should review this checklist and verify they are following proper procedures:

Universal Waste, including oil, lights, and batteries must be labelled with the words “Universal Waste Lights/Batteries” or “Used Oil”. Lights and Batteries also need to list the start date for accumulation, which should be sometime within the past year. All waste boxes or containers must be properly closed or sealed when not being filled.

Dangerous Waste must be properly labelled. At a minimum a dangerous waste label must have the words “Dangerous Waste”, it must list the major hazard, and show all constituents written out with no abbreviations and the percentages associated with each. Label showed be attached to container before the first drop of waste is added.

Dangerous Waste must be properly stored. Waste should be kept in compatible containers. In some situations, it is also necessary to have some form of secondary containment for liquid waste. A specialized storage cabinet is ideal, but a tub made of chemical resistant plastic is also acceptable. All containers must be closed when not being filled. Incompatible wastes should be separated by distance or segregated by secondary containment tubs.

General housekeeping will be scrutinized. Keep floors clean of debris and tripping hazards, counters should be free of clutter, and chemicals should be put away when not in use. Pay special attention around sinks and drains.

Old chemical containers which have not be used in a long time and appear to have no practical use may be scrutinized by inspectors as improper storage of dangerous waste. EH&S will remove unwanted materials upon request.
