Kelvin Lynn

Dear Voiland College and College of Arts and Sciences Community:

It is with much sadness that we share some heartbreaking news with you.

Our dear friend and colleague, Kelvin Lynn, has passed.

Kelvin has been a beloved member of the Washington State University community for more than 20 years. He touched so many across the entire university. His welcoming smile and kind spirit will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Our deepest condolences go out to Kelvin’s family.

Nationally renowned in the fields of materials science, physics, positron, and crystal growing research, Kelvin came to WSU from the Brookhaven National Lab in 1996.

A Regents professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Department of Physics, and Boeing Chair of Advanced Materials, Kelvin established WSU’s Center for Materials Research as a leader in the engineering of a variety of valuable crystals including cadmium telluride, or “CadTel,” used in solar energy and medical imaging industries. His scientific breakthroughs earned him election to the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society, and the Washington State Academy of Science.

A gathering to honor and remember Kelvin will be held on Saturday, January 11 from 5-7 pm at Stark’s Funeral Parlor, 3651 So. 900 East, in Salt Lake City. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to Grand Staircase-Escalante Partners at GSENM.org. Online condolences may be offered at Stark’s Funeral Parlor.

We anticipate that there may be an additional remembrance and celebration of Kelvin’s life and legacy in Pullman; We will keep you informed if details emerge.

Kelvin’s passing is a terrible loss for all of us. People experience grief in many different ways, so we want to ensure you are aware of resources available to you during this time. Please do not hesitate to reach out to WSU’s Employee Assistance Program, available 24/7, at 1-877-313-4455. Additional information is available on the WSU Human Resource Services website. If you need time away from work, please coordinate with your supervisor.
