Ayad Rahmani has been named a member of the board of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy.

A Washington State University and University of Washington team led by Hongfei Lin received a $2 million grant from National Science Foundation Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation program for research to recycle and create valuable products out of municipal waste plastics. Geekwire reported on this story.

A group of Washington State University researchers, including Jan Boll, are joining a new $15 million National Science Foundation-funded project to help communities deal with the complex problems of extended droughts, frequent wildfires, and population growth.

SEL-WSU Collaboration Week September 13-17

WSU and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories enjoy a long-term partnership. Started in Pullman by a WSU alumnus, SEL has grown to a worldwide organization with over 5500 employees. To celebrate our partnership and provide opportunities for our students and faculty to interact with SEL professionals, we are having SEL-WSU Collaboration Week September 13-17 with multiple events for students and faculty. Please see list of events below. Additional details will be provided in the near future.

One of the opportunities for Collaboration Week is to have SEL speakers participate in classes and now with Zoom, SEL speakers can participate across the WSU system. Additionally, SEL speakers are available for student organizations and other groups that might have interest in a speaker. If you are interested in having an SEL speaker for the week of September 13 (or anytime this semester), please fill out this short survey by Aug 31 so we can connect the right speaker with your activity or class.

Monday, September 13

  • 4-5 pm – CEO Fireside Chat – WSU Murrow Student will interview SEL CEO about Career Advice.
  • 5-6 pm – Reception – Meet the SEL CEO.

Wednesday, September 15

  • 3-4 pm – Student Focused Session – Talk to HR Representatives and Speed Networking for Ice Cream*.
  • SEL representatives from HR and others units including business and engineering will be at tables to discuss career advice related to finding internships, interviewing, career opportunities and more.
  • Participants visiting three different networking tables get a WSU ice cream grabber!

  • 3:30-4:30 pm – Why everyone should care about cybersecurity and what are SEL’s best practices?
  • A panel of SEL experts will discuss why cybersecurity is important to all of us and best practices for organizations and individuals.

Undergraduate Research Presentation – Research Week Competition

The Office of Research Advancement and Partnerships is pleased to announce its 1st undergraduate presentation of completed (or near completion) research.

WSU undergraduate students interested in presenting on a research project performed during their academic tenure can apply to this competition. Selected finalists will give a 10-minute presentation on Thursday October 14th during the 2021 Research Week. Applications are due September 21st.

ABRCMS Conference Nov. 10-13

The Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students is taking place virtually, November 10-13, 2021. Abstracts are due Sept.10.

NSF GRFP

The National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) provides fellowships to students selected early in their graduate careers based on their demonstrated potential for significant research achievements in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) or in STEM education. Three years of support is provided by the program for graduate study that leads to a research based master’s or doctoral degree in STEM or STEM education.

Learn to Support Cougs in Crisis

We can all help support mental health in our campus community. Learn how to identify Cougs in crisis and connect them with support by signing up for a training at Cougar Health Services. Sessions are available for all WSU locations.

Campus Connect

This 2-hour suicide prevention training program is offered free of charge for all WSU staff and students. Participants learn: Statistics and facts about college student suicide; How to ask if someone is feeling suicidal; Appropriate referrals; Active listening, communication, and relationship building skills.

Mental Health First Aid

Participants in this training learn about symptoms, crisis response, and active listening skills to support someone who is experiencing a mental health disorder such as: Depression and anxiety; Trauma; Psychosis; Eating disorders; Substance abuse.

Mental Health First Aid is free for WSU Pullman, Global, and Vancouver campus students.

Preregistration is required and capacity is limited. All registration for Mental Health First Aid and Campus Connect should be completed through our online form.

Feeling stressed, need help coping, or just want tips for managing your stress? We can help!

To sign up, text “@STRESS” to 844-486-0046. You can join at any time and this program is available for all WSU locations.

Join our text messaging program and we will:

  • Check in with you every week to see how you’re doing;
  • Send you weekly tips for lowering stress;
  • Share information about health-related events and resources around campus.

Vaccine Mandated, Masks Required this Fall

Washington Governor Jay Inslee will require all school employees in the state, including those working at colleges and universities, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Oct. 18. In addition, he reintroduced a state-wide mask mandate, regardless of an individual’s vaccination status, in response to the surging Delta variant of the SARS‑CoV‑2 virus.

COVID‑19 Vaccination Declaration – Instructions

WSU employees who are not vaccinated must file a vaccination exemption request via Workday before Aug. 23. Here’s how to find where in Workday you can complete your COVID-19 vaccination declaration.
