Preparing for Alternative Teaching Methods: COVID-19 March 9 Update

I wanted to share today’s COVID-19 faculty update from WSU Provost Bryan Slinker, which you will find attached as well as below this email.

It provides timely advice and outlines some of WSU’s advance preparations for teaching during this complex and rapidly evolving issue.

Digital Teaching Resources: COVID-19 March 5 Update

Earlier this week Washington Governor Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency in response to new cases of novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, directing all state agencies to use all resources necessary to prepare for and respond to the outbreak.

As such, WSU formally activated its system-wide Incident Command (ICS) team to respond to this rapidly evolving situation. ICS consists of staff from medical, public safety, campus operations, student and academic affairs, risk management, and other university offices from across the WSU system.

The linked document provides university information and links to resources regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. College leadership is working with the university, campuses and our colleagues to develop and implement continuity of operations plans for our academic, research and other programs and services as this public health issue progresses.

Hussein Zbib Memorial Friday, March 6

I want to let you know a memorial gathering for our friend and colleague Hussein Zbib will be held Friday, March 6 at 11 AM in the CUB Jr. Ballroom, in Pullman.

Hussein passed away in Pullman on February 10.

Yesterday, the state of Washington declared a State of Emergency after learning of the first US death from COVID-19. I know there is a heightened level of anxiety, especially where our campuses, research, extension and affiliated sites are located in close proximity to the Washington and Oregon COVID-19 cases. A memorial gathering to honor and celebrate our friend and colleague Kelvin Lynn will take place on Friday, Jan. 17 at 11:30 a.m. in the Floyd Cultural Center on the WSU Pullman campus. We hope you can join us.

It is with much sadness that we share some heartbreaking news with you.

Our dear friend and colleague, Kelvin Lynn, has passed.

Kelvin has been a beloved member of the Washington State University community for more than 20 years. He touched so many across the entire university. His welcoming smile and kind spirit will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him. Our deepest condolences go out to Kelvin’s family.
