Mona Ghandi’s project, “Wisteria: Architecture as an Embodiment of Human Emotion” has been selected as a Finalist in the Architizer A+Awards for the Architecture +New Technology category. You can vote for her work in the Popular Choice category. The deadline for voting is on Friday, June 25 at 12 midnight PST.

Kaiyan Qiu is developing a better, real-world heart model that aspiring surgeons could practice on before they go into the operating room. Qiu recently won a $50,000 grant through WSU’s inaugural Cougar Cage competition to help advance the technology.

The National Institutes of Health has awarded a $1.3 million Maximizing Access to Research Careers (MARC) grant to Washington State University to fund underrepresented student researchers on their way to completing a biomedical, research-focused Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. program. Alla Kostyukova is a co-PI.

The Spokesman Review featured a story on a multidisciplinary team led by Diane Cook that are gaining better analysis of data from smart home devices in helping detect cognitive decline.

Under the guidance of Bernard Van Wie, graduate students Kitana Kaiphanliam and Brenden Fraser-Hevlin are working to commercialize a bioreactor that is able to grow 25 times more of the valuable T cells than current technology in half the time. They recently won a $50,000 grant through WSU’s inaugural Cougar Cage competition and took third place in the 2021 University of Washington Dempsey Startup Competition.

Led by John McCloy, researchers aim to improve cadmium telluride solar technology to make it more competitive with silicon solar cells, which currently makes up 90 percent of the solar cell market as part of a new $300,000 award from the Solar Energy Technologies Office
