Former postdoctoral fellow Erin Hanan along with Professors Jennifer Adam and Ming-Liang Liu have published a study that shows the effects of climate change and forest management on Western wildfire activity.

The Daily Evergreen highlighted the efforts of a WSU research team that includes Xiao Zhang to develop a sustainable formula that acts as a protective barrier from the cold, an innovation that could revolutionize less reliable farming techniques.

Xiao Zhang, Matt Whiting, Qin Zhang and Changki Mo are utilizing cellulose nanocrystals to protect grape, cherry and other flowering crop plants during frost events.

Omar Al-Hassawi received the American Institute of Architecture Students and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture New Faculty Teaching Award.

Feb. 9, 2021 Voiland College This Week

Bernard Van Wie, Vikram Yadama, Hongfei Lin, Anurag Srivastava, Mona Ghandi, and Feng Zhao received Commercialization Gap Fund awards from WSU’s Office of Research and Washington Research Foundation.

WSU’s Outdoor Research Facility, founded by Jacob Leachman, was featured in the Daily Evergreen.

Feb. 2, 2021 Voiland College This Week

Voiland College’s online graduate engineering programs ranked 25th in the Best Online Engineering Programs category in US News and World Report’s Best Online Programs 2021 Rankings.

A research team led by Jana Doppa and graduate student Syrine Belakaria developed and used a machine learning algorithm to find optimal designs for an electric power system by evaluating less than 0.05% of the designs. The work could mean savings for engineers who are seeking to solve complex engineering problems to maximize safety and sustainability. The researchers presented their work at the IEEE Energy Conversion Congress and Exposition.

Jan. 26, 2021 Voiland College This Week

Yong Wang, Junming Sun, John McCloy, Scott Beckman, and Min-Kyu Song were awarded JCDREAM seed grants.

Led by Jinwen Zhang, researchers developed a recyclable material that is as strong as commonly used carbon-fiber composites and can also be broken down in very hot water within a pressure vessel.

Jan. 19, 2021 Voiland College This Week

As part of their senior design project through the Industrial Design Clinic, Ryan Magoon, Joseph Ponti, Michael Lewis, Leif Harfst, Andy Mei, Lance Harris, and James Zimmer developed a testing robot that could help alleviate some of the challenges of matching the technology with people.

Angelique Umutoniwase was selected as the 2020 recipient of the WTS Spokane/Coeur d’Alene chapter’s Maggie Walsh Leadership Legacy Graduate scholarship.

Jan. 12, 2021 Voiland College This Week

A new grant led by Omar Al-Hassawi and David Drake will support development of two graduate courses focused on sustainable design and entrepreneurship.

A paper by Xianming Shi and Gang Xu titled, “Characteristics and applications of fly ash as a sustainable construction material: state-of-the-art review” was awarded the 2020 Most Cited Paper Award by Resources Conservation & Recycling.
