Ayad Rahmani has been named a member of the board of the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy.

A Washington State University and University of Washington team led by Hongfei Lin received a $2 million grant from National Science Foundation Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation program for research to recycle and create valuable products out of municipal waste plastics. Geekwire reported on this story.

Noel Schulz has been appointed co-director of the Washington State University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Advanced Grid Institute.

Washington State University and Palouse Habitat for Humanity announced a long-term partnership to study practical ways to create affordable, energy efficient housing.

Welcome Back – Fall 2021

It’s a week before school begins and I already have the First Day of School Jitters. Can you believe it’s been nearly 18 months since we last taught classes in person?

This year, of course, things are different. I’m sure many of you share the same feelings of anticipation and anxiety that I’ve had since being back on campus in our new Post-Vaccine World: Do the vaccines and masks really work? Can we successfully return to teaching in person?

The answer to these questions is ‘Yes.’

Assefaw Gebremedhin will moderate a panel discussion titled “Artificial Intelligence – Jobs of the Future” at the NCESD and NCW Tech Alliance AI Expo at 10 AM Thursday, August 12. The AI Expo is open to the business community and general public to attend, virtually, free-of-charge.

Xianming Shi has been named as interim chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Shi also received a Chloride Reduction Leadership Award at the 2021 Salt Symposium.

Konstantin Matveev has been named a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Ganapati Bhat, Jana Doppa, and Partha Pande received a best paper award for research published in the Association of Computing Technology’s Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems.

July 27, 2021 Voiland College This Week

A new study led by Sasha McLarty found important lessons for understanding how to better monitor and manage groundwater and the key factors that impact community monitoring of common resources. The research is featured in a special issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

In a paper published in the JMIR Formative Research, a WSU research team that included Hassan Ghasemzadeh found that wearable wristbands measure physiological responses to stress in real-time and real-world situations, providing a potential method to help people avoid slipping back into old behaviors.

“Wisteria: Architecture as an Embodiment of Human Emotion,” an emotive intelligent responsive project led by Mona Ghandi, received the popular choice award in the Architizer A+Awards for the Architecture + New Technology category.

Noel Schulz was elected as a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences.
