It also means that if you have to miss a class you are able to go back and get the entire lecture. I also think the exam format of closed note, closed book is antiquated in a world where everyone has a computer in their pocket. It is much more practical to give exams that focus on problem solving rather than information regurgitation. Many professors are giving open note, open book exams with distance learning which I thought was the direction we should be going anyway.

It’s often difficult to communicate through online due to a lack of care by the student body. Not so much here, everyone genuinely cares about their education.

The studding is so easy

Our teacher has been very engaging. We break off into smaller groups so we get more one on one help. Overall the class has been very organized and it is clear what needs to be done and when.

Love my professors

I did not know what to expect in terms of how assignments and lectures would be handled and I was pleasantly surprised to find that all of my professors and TAs were prepared for the class environment.

They have been completely asynchronous, allowing me to adapt my study to my schedule, and the the video lectures are inclusive and easy to understand

Its been good.

Not only has the teacher been very informative, but having the recording available makes it easy to not interrupt class as I can always go back to hear something I missed. If I have questions then, I can take it to a tutor or to the professor’s office hours.

It’s organized and more active when it comes to asking questions

The professors have been understanding, welcoming, so helpful, and overall a joy to work with.

My professor is cool

Andy O’Fallon in particular has been extremely accommodating and I’ve enjoyed being in his class so far. Most of my work was already on a computer in his class, so I suppose the transition wasn’t too difficult. The TA’s have been very helpful as well. He’s very personable and there are minimal interruptions in class. The labs are challenging, fun, and very interactive. Most of my classes follow a similar vein, but Andy’s is a prime example.

Because my professor right now makes sure that I understand the material. With the same material at my community college, my professors couldn’t care more.

I am really enjoying my Workd of Design and Construction class, it’s getting me super excited to get in to my major

Lectures still feel as engaging as they did in pereson

I am taking CPTS with Andy O’Fallon and it has been great. He is always updating us, providing us with great resources, and the way the course is set up is great.

My SDC 100 and SDC 120 teachers are amazing! They listen to their students and are really open to questions. They are very inclusive in class.

The curriculum of my last two terms lends well to online teaching, even the labs given the extensive use of computer based coding and analysis tools like Matlab, RStudio, Ansys, Spice. The instructors have adjusted well to the online based techniques required to deliver content beyond simple PPT slides.

I have more time to complete my work as im not commuting to an fro. I also have more time because I get to work from my desk at home instead of walking around campus, constantly packing and unpacking my bag. I also really like virtual office hours. It is very difficult to get to office hours in person as most of my professor’s offices are on the third floor of the ENCS building. I also am able to do all my homework on matlab and i am not wasting paper/I am more organized with my homeworks.

Having used Zoom during the Spring semester really made it easier for the start of the Fall semester.

My intructors for the SDC are all very excited and enthusiastic about what they’re teaching making the online classes feel more like they’re in person. Also my classes through the SDC are my favorite ones this semester.

The professors are effectively teaching over zoom.

All my classes are going great

Loved that all classes are recorded. Helps with my disability.

Karl Olsen has been amazing in teaching my static’s class online.

My experience last year was very lacking so I assumed it would be the same. This year professors seem to be much more prepared and have more tools to use

I believe my classes have translated to an online curriculum really well and I feel I am learning quite well even though I’m not on campus.

Class has gone smoothly

I feel like there is much more to do and learn and just having lectures record I can easily go back and find the information to study or review the information something that never really was needed to do. I also like that we have videos, readings and discussions. Of course what I am missing or is study tours and hands on experiences and the struggle of doing classes online can become boring and draining

I can repeat the lecture as much i want

I’m currently taking SDC 100 and 120. My 100 professor Gracjan is so great and makes it easy to want to be engaged and involved in the class. He’s very passionate about teaching what he does. My 120 professor Bob has exceeded my expectations with delivering a drawing class virtually, as I had my doubts about how the quality would be. Although I wish I was on campus to draw, I don’t feel like I’m losing any quality in my courses.

They have real live lectures. Not asynchronous. Asynchronous feels like watching a YouTube video for $2000

Professors were very prepared to teach the topic. They are doing a great job of keeping people engaged even in these difficult times.

Classes are going smooth and the teaching is still happening effectively.

The professors are understanding

Comments on Poor Experience

Why did you select “much worse than expected?

There appears to be a disconnect when utilizing an online platform. Information is not being provided in a timely manner. Speaking of, BB decides to send notification hours after the fact when something has been posted. Therefore, causing the individual to scramble to complete assigned tasks. Causing the individual the inability to schedule work loads accordingly to individual’s best fit schedule. Also… due to lack in person teaching I have found mostly a person disconnect with the Prof when it comes to learning. They attempt to bombard the individual with copious amounts of information simply due to the idea the student has all the time in the world to complete tasks and/or learning. I do not find this method (not in all cases ,depends on the Prof) to be utilized well enough to promote ‘good’ learning.

I would never voluntarily subject myself to online schooling, it lacks the community and connection to my studies that allow me to thrive as a student.

The general learning experience online with difficult 400 level topics is not going well for me.

Because Blackboard is a horrible website and I cannot find any of my assignments since they are on 8 different websites.

It’s just terrible, the worst thing you could do to a student in these times.

Surveying class has been terrible

Huge amount of busy work – teachers seem to not communicate so they end up putting too much on our plate. I’m spending a ridiculous amount of time doing schoolwork because every little things needs to be done online. As far as surveying, I haven’t learned a single thing, the labs are super unorganized and a huge waste of time and money. Surveying should have been left out of the requirements or at the very least put off for a year. I understand Karl Olsen is doing his best but it sucks right now

I feel like I am learning much less than I would have in person. Only 2/6 classes have zoom lectures and the rest are just lazy bb powerpoint uploads. I don’t understand why tuition was not cheaper for lazier instruction.

Complicated, nothing is centralized even though they’re supposed to be using blackboard. Losing track of assignments due to the fact that each teacher uses a different homework sites and nothing is centralised in one location. This could be fixed if all assignments, quizzes, exams, etc were all posted on blackboard calendar. Paying extra for these homework turn in sites. Paying extra for equipment to do labs at home. Teachers using old recording of lectures from 2019 instead of live zoom calls. Some teachers write notes using their mouse, which is incredibly difficult to make legible, pair that with a thick accent and the class is very hard to understand.

Some of the professors expect the students to do twice or three times as much work/time as when in person. I have one professor that we have to watch a prerecorded lecture and then also attend the normal lecture time.

Mainly quality and difficulty. Biggest issue is that all my professors are using stock laptop microphones, and they all pickup major feedback. $10 cheap USB mics are superior to anything my professors are using. My professor in 321 has the worst mic by far, and I have to lower my volume to 10% to deal with all the feedback his microphone provides.

None of my professors are taking course load into accountability or teaching well.

Comments on Positive Professor Actions

Thinking back to your classes in the past few weeks, what things, if any, did your Voiland College professors do that made your online education experience better?

They have been very good at posting lecture notes and uploading additional resources that are relevant

Nothing

Some teachers are overwhelmed by emails that they aren’t able to answer questions needed for an assignment prior to the due date.

Not much.

Provide warnings when classes will be posted or live zoom meetings

Lots of visuals

they have been kind and understanding of current situation

Provide external resources, recordings of previous lectures, weekly announcements on homework assignments, frequent contact through email

Slowed down!!

Using the cameras to show us how to draw certain things

Engage with students during lectures

Increased availability for email queries has been significantly more prevalent than in previous semesters with traditional in-person classes.

Online labs are horrible. I honestly am not sure how to improve them.

Specifically, I think Dr. Jake Leachman has been doing a really good job being understanding (pushing a deadline 24 hours) and being reasonably accommodating during this time. I also think Lloyd Smith has been doing engaging lectures, which is very much appreciated

Using Panopto – while only one of my classes does this, the embedded quizzes, general Panopto layout, and the ability to watch lectures at your own pace every-so-often, has not only made it easier to learn, but I learn more and actually thoroughly enjoy learning the content.

My professors seem to maximise the use of zoom, he/she utilize the zoom whiteboard well to explain

They reviewed the topics

just being more generous when it came to office hours, answering student questions, and understanding students accommodations

Be more flexible with due dates during the pandemic

None

My professors have made themselves available for help at convenient times of day.

Made themselves available to email

Maybe have the professors not just write the textbook on a whiteboard and actually teach that would help

Online exercise on problems

offered a lot of visuals and PowerPoints

It’s not that the online classes have necessarily been taught poorly by the professors. In my experience so far, most of my professors have taught very well, but the increase in homework assigned has made it difficult to find time to relax and absorb any information we’ve learned in class.

Assist with tech problems and helping-out on work.

Having recorded lectures to go back to has been super helpful

My professors are always concerning about us, just like we are really in the campus.

Being available most of the time by email

Made sure that we are more than welcome to email them to ask questions

The Voiland College professors provided amazing resources that helped me have a better education experience.

some prepared course material better ahead of time

I love most of my classes more than in high school. Most of my professors are very good and have made helpful changes to their classes in order to adapt to online classes. I really appreciate that all lectures are recorded and posted. Doing work in teams has also made the experience better because those are some of the only opportunities that I have had to actually get to know new people.

Ask lots of questions to engage students.

They engaged with the students and showing actual excitement to teach the material and go at a pace where we can still pay attention.

Consistent office hours

Some of my professors were very interactive with students through Zoom, constantly answering questions and addressing concerns. This makes the online education experience feel much more authentic.

Communicate a lot with students, empathize, and increase flexibility

They send out reminders and remind you during class. They are always willing to help you with any issue you have and answer your questions in a timely manner.

Being positive and having stuff well organized for students.

A lot of professors have engagement or things to follow along in class which is nice

Having pre-recorded lectures is nice but besides that none of my professors have made anything easier then it would have been with in person classes.

They were personable and made it clear that this is new to everyone. It made everyone feel better coming in

Emily Allen

I think the professors of Voiland College understand that it’s challenging to adopt online learning which is really appreciated, more help sources than expected are available and very adequate time is given work and do homeworks.

Started to get into better routine with classes and homework deadlines.

yes

Stopping lecture periodically for questions

They ask questions about how we are doing, what they can do to help improve out online experience, and take time to answer our questions.

My professor are really patient and always ready to answer any questions. They make sure you understand and know what to do

Homework help sessions, breakout rooms in the classes for small group projects. I appreciate any interactivity in the online classroom.

They clearly outline deadlines for assingments.

Lots of online engagement through group work and examples through screen share/dock camera.

They’ve tried hard to be understanding and acknowledge that technology doesn’t always work out. They have also been good about providing the notes in multiple places and other resources.

yes, they always helped and supported me

Went above and beyond utilizing office hours and emails to help students make up for the lack of in-person interaction.

Dr. Murray is my man. Very accessible and expectations are clear.

Having the due dates for assignments mapped out well in advance so we can remember to do them and plan ahead

Posting lectures online and notes is a huge help.

Flexibility with attendance and recording of lectures. That way I can work in the industry, finish my degree, and be financially stable throughout the pandemic.

Not much. Seems like slightly worse versions of lectures we would’ve gotten before.

I think having students put an image or having their camera on made it feel like an actual classroom. Also the professors providing powerpoints, note and recorded lectures is helpful when studying. Lastly rather than having pencil and paper notes during lecture they write on a onenote or something else really helps visabely.

Make lecture videos available to watch outside of classes

the class is hard, it forces me to study harder

Not requiring to turn cameras on allowed for less distractions and better streaming. Emailing us when a new homework or assignment was posted is ALWAYS helpful with things being online now as sometimes during online lecture it can be easy to miss quick announcements or blackboard notifications, basically with everything online it is easier to miss things so that extra reminder is nice.

Extending due dates, providing online resources, providing class content and recordings on blackboard

Prof uploaded their lecture to blackboard so that we can check anytime. It’s so convenient to watch lecture again if I miss any important details.

Extend assignments due to power outrages

They have recorded their lectures and made their powerpoints easily accessible. They also hosted more office hours and bonus sessions.

Online office hours are an absolute godsend. I think I’ve gone to more office hours this semester than the last 3 years combined. If we go back to in person I’d really like to keep zoom office hours

My professors set up zoom office hours where you can go ask questions and get help on homework.

Made sure we are working in groups and communicating with others so that we are not totally solo on projects and assignments for the class.

Actually writing out the notes with us is much easier to follow than writing out notes ahead of time

Makes the class fun, just by being excited about it and working with challenges in tech

They try to keep the mood light, and talk about the good side of things. Not focusing on all the bad news like a lot of professors.

They are trying their best and trying to keep it engaging which is very nice.

Dr. Wu always has a smile on his face and makes himself appear very opened and ready to help out.

Posting helpful videos on how to submit work, giving a practice exam on blackboard so we could get familiar with the format.

David Pollock has made himself available at most times of the day to answer questions and is really covering the material well.

Using note software

They work on their tablets/ipads to do in class examples/notes which is very beneficial.

Lecture videos are recorded

Kept in touch through emails and tried their best to make sure everyone was on board

Professors having their cameras on while they are lecturing has helped me focus in class compared to classes where the professors only have their slides up and no camera on

Friendly, communicative, understanding. There is such a thing as being unresponsive when it comes to student questions. This is something I struggled with in my previous school. Not here. I also appreciate WSU sending equipment to help me with my education. I am referring to the mobile hotspot. I do however recommend using Verizon for the mobile hotspot since T-mobile has spotty coverage in my area and often disconnects at desperate times.

Rene Peterson is always just an email away to help with questions and has told me that it’s fine that I have a million

The amount of effort that is being put in to make sure everyone is setup for success.

They took classes slow and moved at the pace that the students understood at instead of the pace they understand the material.

as interactive as possible through the online setting

One keeps us updated with announcements/emails.

They did not assign a lot of homework, and made it manageable for me to work and go to school.

A couple of my professors is still making an effort to get to know us, learn our names, etc and that’s been really nice. My favorite ways that my professors are teaching so far is that four of them are using document cameras or a tablet to write out their class notes just like they would normally. It’s so hard not being able to meet them in person but I’ve started going to office hours and now I feel like I know them a little better than just looking at their face on my laptop.

More examples and practice with problems

My professors have been great at communicating what is expected of us, and they’ve made themselves available even on weekends to provide feedback and answer concerns

Portray content that is learned in class through real life applications. Give the opportunity to ask questions and seek help outside of class time.

Including In-Class assignments. They are stressful to make sure they get turned in, but helpful to provide some interaction and encourage students to pay more attention to zooms. Also, recording zooms so that there can be a reference if anything is missed during the zoom the first time. Lastly, one of my professor has written notes posted. That helps so that if I miss something I t he notes, I can go back and see what I missed since zooms can be quite fast paced.

Notify me of various events happening in the college. Even if I don’t attend, it is nice to know what is going on.

In my surveying class we watched part of videos in class that explained the concepts and helped me feel like I was part of a normal class structure

They are interacting with the students in class and in breakout rooms.

To our professors if they can post slides before the class start.

being very understanding and helpful

Prof. Broschat has been very responsive and understanding with students. Specifically, she makes a point of maintaining communication during lectures. (It feels like a one-on-one conversation, rather than an educational video.)

Maybe to do more examples of how to solve problems in class, I feel the provided text isn’t enough.

Having in class activities in breakout rooms

Especially with my ENGR 120 class, it helped that the instructor was comfortable with doing online and not figuring out things as she was going about her teaching.

Clint Cole has been very helpful with support for EE324 by providing extra learning resources

Gave a decent amount of time for us to get acquainted with the technology.

Clearly defined assignments and expectations, detailed syllabuses and schedules, ample educational resources provided outside of lectures.

Letting us know about VCEA club meetings to help us get involved

Interacted with students

Recording lecture and labs

Does a lot example problems in classroom

Very interactive and enjoyable activities that are more than just book work

They were very friendly and they made it very clear that there are a ton of resources avialable to me if I need help. They also made sure to answer all questions.

My professor, Olivia Reynolds, responded to my email very quickly when I needed assistance building a resume, it was so nice and very helpful! Quick responses are always the best!

Zoom links were directly on blackboard (only 1 prof has this)

Live lectures are great and make classes feel as close as possible to in-person classes. Also, frequently interacting with students helps engagement a lot.

Reply emails fast

They communicated clearly what the class expectations were, and if there were any changes to those expectations when they needed to be changed.

Cancel class

I am not totally sure.

Be available

Provided time outside of class for help on homework or class material

Have been available for office hours that work with my schedule.

They usually try to make sure we are getting all the information and when we make suggestions or are having trouble they always try to help! It has been difficult sometimes due to the internet connection not always being the best or glitches on the internet, so it is nice having a little help every now and then and for the professors being understanding about that aspect of turning in assignments or coming to class!

Writing out notes on a tablet instead of using power points

Staying positive

I beg the university to reconsider the impact this will have on students grades and cancel school until the corona virus is over.

proficiency in Zoom helps.Having a slower pace aslo betters resembles an in person class, as questions can be better addressed while the relevant content is being covered

Our teacher checked in with us during out lab that is taught by a TA. Wanted to answer questions and help us understand what dates assignments are uploaded and such. Another class has a direct link on the Blackboard page to our Zoom meetings so it’s easy to find, and set a calendar with all dates and expectations for the semester.

Yes

Willingness to understand our situation and the needs of the students

Let students answer questions to each other in chat so the teacher could focus on the lecture

They have all been quick to answer emails and get back to us when we have questions. They take time to answer questions in lecture. They are overall very understanding of the situation we are in and try to make everything as streamline and understandable as possible.

Its hard to say how they can make the experience better

Hold extra classes

Provided online office hours to get additional help with material.

They helped explain hws better during class

My professors were able to seamlessly transition to prepared examples while sharing their screens

My CE proctored exam was on zoom instead of proctorU.

Took time to understand that online learning has its shortcomings and were accommodating and helpful.

I think that the Voiland College professors have really taken the time to help students understand their material to the best of their ability. This is not an easy time for us, as students and as educators, and I completely respect and admire everyone’s determination to give or receive a higher education through adversity.

Stay after class time to answer any questiobs we may have had about the lecture material, homework or class in general

nothing other than make stuff as difficult and confusing as possible

Honestly, not much. I was pretty disappointing.

Some were only doing recorded lectures but they started doing live classes again

Actively working problems on the screen. As much time I can get with the professors the better!

I like how all my lectures are recorded and I can watch them anytime after class if I need to go back to review something or if I didn’t understand something during live lecture

Easy to talk to and very ensured by there area of study! Fun to learn from

Yes! He only uses blackboard instead or three different platforms like some of my other classes. It is also the only class I have that breaks us into smaller group to discuss with the professor directly. It’s also nice to have the zoom for every class period we are scheduled so we have that time to work and learn in class not just looking at the assignment on a pdf.

A lot of teachers are thinking it’s easier for us so in return they put a bunch of group projects to do but it’s impossible to work as groups on big projects over FaceTime

Flexible due dates. Grading on a curve. Understanding technology issues

Classes are really tough and not a lot of explanation from anyone and it’s all figure it out on your own with little instructions

Provide PDFs of what used to be in class handouts

Cannot think of anything right now

Recorded lectures: great for watching again if I don’t fully understand a concept taught in lecture, or if I may have missed something said or written down in lecture.

They are very organized and have lots of passion for what they do.

Record Lectures

My engineering 120 professor moved back a deadline for our research paper topic–that really helped lower the amount of things I have to worry about right now.

I feel like I learn better in a live setting. It seems harder for me to ask question when the lectures are on zoom.

They did not require video to be on as long as a profile picture would show on the zoom call. I appreciate that

I appreciate it when the professors intentionally make time for questions and are willing to stop at any time to answer a question. This makes it so that most of the confusing points or topics can be immediately dealt with

Extended the window of hours when we can complete/submit quizzes and exams.

They make sure that we have lots of resources in this remote environment.

They take the time to let us ask questions, and make sure that everyone understands before moving on to another topic. On multiple occasions professors and TA’s have also found fun alternative ways to help introduce and teach new topics.

Remaining personable

Better deadlines and are understanding about technology malfunctions

n/a

Asking questions and keeping the students involved

answer questions

Were understanding about homework turn in times

Flexible class recordings to watch lectures multiple times

They were always asking how they could do better.

They tried to make the class feel engaging

Most of my professors have a little slower pace, which is really nice and allows me to really learn everything.

Recitation class is very useful when being held online

They quickly answered my questions either over email or directly in a zoom class.

the passion of teaching the course from listening to professors going over the syllabus and talking about what we are doing in the course. Also, with the professors being very understandable for things that may occur in these crazy times.

Most of the live lectures are best. Other than that, this is what I expected.

Clearly communicated changes that were made to the way online classes were needed. Patient with students who were easing into the different environment.

Frequent use of visual aids, question periods, resources easily available.

In my opinion, tutoring system of Voiland College should be posted on Blackboard for students to get more chances to be answered their questions and concerns.

Cut back one of the physics labs that we were having trouble getting the parts for.

There was a good amount of work done by my professor to adapt to the online delivery, and I appreciated that she, and her TAs, were willing to adapt to the new way of teaching.

communication

Dr. Wu is very nice. Says we can email him anytime with questions so that relieves some stress.

Make it cheaper because it is significantly worse. Have better course calendars so that students know when assignments are due. It is way easier to miss an assignment when class is online and the instructors dont even have lectures to remind students about assignments.

I suppose they held office hours

Setting flexible test schedules and answering many questions from both myself and other students.

They have been much more helpful and listen a lot more than I came in expecting. They really seem to care about your success.

They understand that computers don’t always work and that everything is different.

The courses are structured in a way that makes online school less bothersome!!!

Uploading recordings of lectures has been amazingly helpful

Making exams open notes

Stay positive!

Very good at communicating they’re expectations

They made the class asynchronous, lending to greater flexibility and adaptability

Andy O Fallon added an optional lab to cpts223

In my engineering lab, the TA’s went group to group to see if we needed help

Nothing special.

kept everything on one site for easiest access, had a summary of due dates at beginning of lectures

synchronous stuff is good

Let students work together

They teach as close to an in person class experience as possible, ask if there are any questions multiple times during the semester

Well-organized and fun

They would post additional tutorials on how to use the softwares we are using. They are very understanding and are always willing to help

less glitches and better explanations on notes

The Cloud Recordings of class are invaluable. I am often interrupted during the live sessions and rely on them heavily.

They will set up more office hours than usual to answer my questions

Organized

I think we are all doing the best we can to adapt to the current climate.

Was struggling with a zylab for computer programming, so my teacher got on zoom with me and helped me through it. Saved a lot of stress.

Not much, they try to run their classes as if they are still on campus. Feels like the workload has actually increased. They are trying to modify some things to try to tailor to the online learning, but I don’t think they even know what they should do. Most professors aren’t sure what exceptions should be made for all of the unique complications that are arising.

The lectures contained many examples different types of problems. With virtual lectures understanding the content can be harder than when lectures are in person. Providing lots of examples in lecture gives me great resources to revisit when completing other assignments

They have explained things thoroughly, as well as have been very personable to the students.

One professor spent class time genuinely checking in on us and giving us tips on stress. As well as most of my professors being very good about setting up zooms outside of class.

Professors have been very good with answering questions after lectures or over e-mail.

Hudson’s online classes are ace, Zoom is malware and needs to be avoided. Youtube lectures are much, much better.

Make classes more fun

I like that the lectures are recorded and we are able to go back and else view our lecture slides. With zoom meeting, I feel that we are participating more but it is hard because there tends to be a lot of talking over each other

Still being available during office hours and also making lectures engaging over zoom.

they have posted old exams to help us study and provided us with links to tutoring to help us prepare for exams

Give flexible deadlines and have lectures recorded for later viewing

None

One professor shortened lab and made it into a video.

He responded to me late at night after I panicky texted him

Make a question page to ask questions to the professor.

Communicated well about due dates and assignments, posted all the necessary material online and more

Engagement

They always try to adjust the amount of work relevant to what’s going on now. Always active and engaging to reply to my questions

I feel live synchronous meetings are better than asynchronous ones.

How relaxed and welcoming the environment has seemed, i expected things to be tough and possibly slightly unwelcoming but it’s a super relaxed fun and educational environment

uploading all their notes from lecture and video recordings of lectures

it is good

Posted lectures and answered questions almost immediately after they were put in the chat. Mainly, the professors I have seem pretty passionate and knowledge on the content which makes it all the more easier to learn from.

This fall, professors are definitely more prepared than they were in the spring to deliver online lectures.

Offer examples and applications to some of the theory that we were learning. That was a huge benefit to me personally, being more of an objective learner.

Offering some asynchronous classes, that personally worked better for me so I know a mixture of both will tend to more students

They have been very responsive with questions.

n/a

Online courses seem very all over the place, unorganized, as well as awkward pacing.

An understanding demeanor about the difficulties of online learning.

They are all very flexible and understand with the remote learning struggles.

Supportive

Had fun watching a physics demo

Not much

Not much has changed since the experience has already been good. Some professors have opened up office hours and made their class more asynchronous, which has been a benefit to some people but I prefer to be as much “in person” as possible. All of my professors record their lectures which is extremely helpful for when I may forget something.

N/A

She made sure that we get the help we need and makes us interact through the reef app.

Reviewing material and constantly making sure there is understand as well as getting students engaged in class verbally has made the experience better.

My professor is very understanding with issues that come will being on line and it helps out a lot

Posting the recorded lectures so we can rewatch

Paying attention to the chat box in zoom meetings and being interactive through email.

One thing that is done better is being able to access video presentations online.

Professors were friendly and eager to help; they explained things when the students did not understand and tried their best to make sure we learned as much as we could in the most efficient way possible.

For the most part, I think teacjers being able to host a zoom meeting has been a plus for me because that way I can het to knoe my professors.

They are going out of their way to be available for questions

They made lectures more engaging with learning new material

Adding polls as mini quizzes during lecture keep me engaged and focused

no

Helped me and gave me many resources to succeed

Good at contacting

Open communication, access to content outside of Blackboard

It is nice when they post the PowerPoint slides bc I can go back and look at those rather than having to filter through the recording if I missed an equation

Most know the types of students in their classes very well and teach accordingly, and they have been very open and flexible with office hours.

Held synchronous classes

More chances to do work deadlines come to soon and no instruction to actually do work

Recording lectures and making themselves available outside of class. Posting all presentation and supporting materials on Blackboard

They both provided office hours and often find themselves asking students questions such as how they are doing so far and give many examples with regards to the text.

Attendance is not very necessary

They were very clear about assignments and due dates

Multiple forms of communication tools like zoom plus zoom breakout rooms, blackboard, Slack, email. Focus on the tools of engineering more than just theory.

Posting examples that we didn’t have time for during lecture.

One professor does the up most to help you and I really appreciate that, however not all Voiland College professors have a longer window than 50 minutes so it’s much harder to help out every student individually.

When classes were canceled on Friday, one of my professors recorded the lecture he was going to give so we wouldn’t fall behind. One professor will periodically stop the lecture to put us in groups and we will solve problems based on what we just learned.

Teachers held office hours which was a step up from highschool and it helped because even from home you can personally speak to your teachers about concerns you may have.

Recorded lectures so that they could be viewed at a later time and rewatched.

Assuming my only professor from the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture is my computer science professor, Andrew O’Fallon, he has underscored that staff are here to help with any problems. Professor is also very approachable and seems knowledgeable on the topics he is lecturing on.

My professor has been very willing to help anyone having trouble. The TA has been especially helpful.

The review for some classes were good.

They are flexible and understand that COVID affects everyone. Professors make an effort to check in and try their best to make zoom meetings easy.

Quick email response

answer questions on zoom

I like the use of dot cams. Professors are still working problems by hand (like they did on a white board) which helps tremendously opposed to showing us powerpoints with everything already solved.

Tutoring

The organized structure and the enthusiasm of the professors making the classes enjoyable.

Some professors have really encouraged using discussion forms to work with other students. In upper level classes I think it is really important to work with other students.

Voiland College professors are really understanding about the different life situations their students may be dealing with. My intro to c professor has been really responsive to questions students may have. He also has email updates when he is a behind on emails.

Flexibility

They acted as if nothing was wrong and taught like everything was normal which helped make everything feel better.

Some of my professors have been very kind and lenient with difficulties with technology or health.

One was open to suggestions and gave a lot of examples

Recording lectures so I can refer back to them.

Understand that current events are making life much harder for many students, and consequently being a little more lenient with class work and deadlines

Hosted extra office hours.

All zoom lectures were recorded

Increased their online availability to accommodate for a lack of in-person meetings

Practice problems, resources, interesting topics

Take into account that we have more classes than just theirs

Well prepared

They used ipad or surface devices that have a digital pen, which make lecture note much easier to understand

NA

Be understanding of our situation as students and how difficult it has been.

The way they communicate with the students and answering questions seems a bit easier than in person

try their best to engage with the students, they are very passionate about their work which makes it easier to pay attention and learn. these teachers are being very informative and keeping us on track.

Set schedule and announcements when schedule changed

I like when my professors slow it down a bit and give examples

Working through examples. Waiting for questions. Posting lecture notes.

Putting up good examples for projects

Provide clear instruction with recording

Uploading lectures online afterwards so we can go back and rewatch. Great for reviewing and studying.

They try to interact with student a lot.

Putting resources like powerpoints in blackboard for us to review

Provided lecture slides, held office hours

They have been more lenient allowing me to keep up with the new learning format

Have alot of office hours available

Voiland professors all teach well, usage of whiteboard is very helpful.

It is more organized than I figured it would be. Professors have their slides and material ready and available for viewing after lectures.

Actively communicating all information needed in classes.

Being flexible with due dates

Its not really on the professors, online instruction just doesn’t feel the same as in person classes.

Jacob Leachman has done an outstanding job in adapting his teaching style to online learning, still making use of paper notes to help students get used to writing down and remembering problems, and overall being good at his job as a teacher

I think I have had better experiences with online classes where a document camera was used during lecture, however not all college professors have access to this equipment and the ones that do purchased the equipment with their own money.

Did actually written notes on his surface pro and talked us through problems we were struggling on

Didn’t just read off powerpoints, really wrote things out, like example problems

Having patience while looking at a computer screen is a skill I am deeply envious of.

They made us feel welcome by talking to us very friendly, keeping us engaged with breakout room sessions and more! My teachers are really friendly and don’t make me feel intimidated to ask any questions. Since I am taking my classes online from India this semester, it is a little hard to stay awake all night for the classes but, the teachers are very understanding and some of them have even told me that they’ll give me extra time for some submissions if required because of the situation. Overall, my teachers have made me feel like I’m enjoying college and helping me make friends too by putting us in breakout rooms.

Having online discussion boards is super helpful to ask other students questions while working on homework. And professors being understanding about technical issues

Being proactive about posting information and assignments.

Somewhat

Flexibility

Dr. Steven Saunders created slides that are missing information which gives incentive to pay attention.

My professor from the Voiland College of Engineering stayed after class to help answer questions regarding Blackboard and how to get to zoom classes. This really helped me stay on top of HW for that class.

Kept things simple and streamlined.

Had interactive assignments for us to complete during class instead of only lecturing

They have review sessions set up for homework help.

record the lectures and make them available after class

keep being entertaining so i can maintain the motivation to attend the class.

I like having classes mostly in person on live zoom classes.

My Engineering 120 professors have helped me get more involved in the school and gave me a lab group which I now consider to be my friends.

Dr. Boddetti bought a new mic

Document cameras

Honestly in the end of the day being able to have office hours and emailing are such useful tools when I get stuck on a problem or assignment. I know when the instructor and ta repeat and remind about office hours I tend more to feel better to use the tool and get my answers answered

Have communicated very well to make sure that we don’t fall behind.

They were really prepared and thought of everything in advance. There are some profesors that are really not prepared and lack onlike skills and it makes it really dificult to be online.

Overall I’ve just appreciated the amount of resources available and the organization.

Group work in ENGR120 so we have people to communicate with

Having interactive sessions and actually answering questions.

Our assignments are changed to fit the online format better

Nothing really.

I feel like they have really taken into account the amount of stress, hardship and other factors that we are going through at this time. The workload does not seem overbearing, I actually feel that I have enough time to get my work done among the other challenges I face in this uncertain time.

Very helpful feedback through email communication

They have just taught as normal

Appreciate the tutoring options despite being online

posting recorded lectures for future reference

Since i am a freshman, only one of my professors is actually related to the school of engineering. My MSE teacher has taught by way of guest lectures and posts the notes online which makes it very easy to find what part of the field i love.

Keep asking Students are following the lecture

With the move to online, people feel disorganized, so instructions seem to be lost in translation. It feels as if things are “sneaking up” on us. Its nice when the lesson is organized in a powerpoint and posted online to refer back to.

My SDC professor really makes you feel as a student like your opinion and voice is valid in the world of design and construction. He makes it known that we can all think what we want about a building or design and that’s what’s so great. I enjoy going to this class. My SDC 120 professor Bob really tries his best to make sure we’re all engaged and putting in the work we need to in order to get the skills developed properly that we need to. During zooms he will meet with breakout groups of about 6 of us to check up on each of us more one on one and make sure we’re doing okay.

They informed us what is due, and where we can find it on blackboard. Every professor has a different layout

Recording the lectures and posting them, posting homework solutions, communicating via email.

The ability to get instant help via online tutoring

Record lectures

I think it’s just easier to ask questions than it is when you’re sitting in the back of a packed classroom.

Use the participation window and called on students. This made the classes a lot more engaging and easier to follow.

Having zoom classes

Thermodynamics professor made online learning fun. He takes notes in a book that we printed off and he is really nice about questions during lecture

Having a schedule of covered material, when assignments are due, and exams.

Made lecutres enguging and interactive.

Professors that encourage online interaction via video or chat make the experience more engaging and personal, rather than just 100% lecture and minimal interaction.

Provided materials to cope with being alone/isolated/quarantined, understood our situations and were more lenient on deadlines

They made class interesting by adding references that is related to the subject yet either funny or thought provoking.

Live class and good office hours

One proff focuses on trying to make himself the best online teacher he can be. Which is honestly the best anyone can do.

Groundwater made lab videos of what the experiment would be like step by step and had us record lab data from the video

They take time to answer any questions you may have while continuing to keep up and teach the rest of the class new lessons. They go very in depth in explaining.

No clue.

Online course experience was very good for me, although I encountered some problems, such as work and surgery. But I can still balance my life and study reasonably, because online classes are conducted asynchronously, so I have more time to focus on my special part

My materials lab professor Colin put a smile on my face after asking him a question after lecture

Professors engaged with the students and made jokes when possible to lighten the mood.

Online synchronous with extra study sections

Professor recording himself doing labs and then provided data to write lab reports.

Teaching the material on the homeworks. Uploading lectures

Have all assignment posted on the calendar helped a lot.

The best experiences that I am having in classes of this format are when the professors encourage participation. I understand that it is hard under the circumstances, but the piece that is generally missing in online classes is being able to freely ask questions and discuss subject material.

I like the recorded lectures, a lot of times I can go without internet for a while because my WiFi goes down, and so recorded lectures definitely help to alleviate some stress

Engaging us in the same interesting content that we would’ve gotten in class. I can still get hands on experience, despite being very far away.

Accommodating my internet issues.

They were welcoming.

Nothing really

They accommodate to us

Live lectures that are also recorded

Comments on Improvements for Professors

What things, if any, could your Voiland College professors improve upon to make your online education experience better?

Reply to emails.

Having TAs and themselves answer emails regarding assignments

Use less PowerPoint. Be more accommodating. Better online testing.

Increase use and student engagement in the discussion board feature in LMS

Post tasks/assignments in a more timely manner. Grade! Grade! Grade! Grade the assignments. It has been 5 weeks now and still not posted grades

im not sure

Text notifications from blackboard would be greatly helpful. It is more challenging to maintain a schedule with from home classes so any tools to help with this would be good.

Post the lecture slides and notes

I would appreciate if professors would try and discourage unnecessary comments in the zoom chat. I find it very distracting and hard to keep track of relevant comments/questions. While I believe the problem has mostly subsided in my personal classes, I think this would be a good general reminder for other classes.

All of my class assignments, grades, and learning materials are on different websites, like Canvas, BlackBoard, and Tophat. This makes it a lot more difficult to track assignments and deadlines. In fact, I still don’t know how to check my grades, with the exception of one course that shows it in blackboard (only 4/5 of my courses have a blackboard page, and only 2/5 actually use blackboard and do assignments through it that way). Personally, my favorite system is Canvas. Blackboard is pretty straight-forward as well, but tophat is incredibly confusing and I have no clue how to navigate through my communications class.

none actually, i’m enjoying their courses

Mute all students apon entry to zoom. Post submissions on weekly assignments before the day they are due.

For CS. More examples of applying a data structure in different scenarios

professors are making the best with what they have so there is nothing I should change

Communicate expectations more clearly and frequently especially for labs

Have class during the time period when class is supposed to happen.

Organization

Review the homework they are assigning

Knowing how zoom works before class ahead of time

Possibly posting lectures slides before the class started

taken more time to reach out with us

Provide more time between new topics to allow students to absorb information better. Jumping from one topic to the next can leave some students behind.

Lecture in a bit different way where everyone benefits and provide exams in a more fair way.

Better structure of classes, more discussion with students

The professors should use the calendar on Blackboard, as most of my classes are, so it conveniently easy to look at due dates and upcoming lectures.

no “attendance” so we can watch the lectures when we have time or if were self motivated join the live zoom call to fit our schedules better

I cannot think of anything. I really appreciate all of the resources such as tutoring, office hours and recorded lectures.

Nothing

Not having any out of class videos to watch and having some time after the class is over for help with hw. Mostly if the teacher has too much stuff to do outside of class it gets really hard to pay attention.

Allow late work

I wish some of my professors were more interactive and straightforward with the class. I believe this is especially important with online education, so students feel more engaged.

Reduce the out of class videos we need to watch. I am not having any issues with the great majority of my classes

I think they are doing the best they can

Recognized that we have other classes besides theirs’, jobs and families and that sometimes we need more time to finish a large amount of work.

Not sure

Better involvement with their students online. It seems like my professors just read from there lecture notes, ask if anyone has questions at the end, and are done.

They could give more timely feedback and ask for feedback more often. They asked the first couple days, then haven’t talked to us about how class is going to what they can do to improve since then. It would be helpful to have my ideas and thoughts heard.

I think their doing a good job overall. But I think maybe talking about more internships or how to prepare for the field once outside of college.

There are no things that my professors could improve, the main difficulty is that the computer science classes that I take needs in-face instruction due to the complexity of the contents that makes it hard to understand without an easy way to talk to the instructor and ask questions, focusing and discussing topics through zoom is really hard for me.

Posting lecture notes

Make classes more interactive and interesting.

More detailed and a bit complicated examples while explaining concepts.

Post the recorded zoom lectures within 24 hours. I have a professor who lectures so fast that I can’t even take notes during lecture. I rely on the recorded zoom sessions to take notes so then I can pause at crucial points during lecture and jot down notes. My professor will wait several days to post the zoom recordings.

Better handwriting and slowing down on teaching us the material.

They’re are great! I don’t see anything they need to improve on

relate the teachings to tangible things.

Check the chat box more often for questions and stop trying to cram in material into the last minute of class.

None. The professors have done an excellent job to replicate a classroom environment and make online learning as easy as it can possibly be.

they adapted the way they taught to be better and appropriate for online studying

Chill out. Let me turn in assignments at 11:59 on Sunday.

I know not every professor may be comfortable with or have three bandwidth ability to have their camera on, but I do think that helps us feel like we “know” our professor a little better when we can see them.

Professors not posting anything online and don’t record lectures. What’s the point of having all this technology at your figure tips if you won’t use it. I wish I switched classes.

Clear schedules for the semester and assignments would be helpful.

Provide other learning avenues than just listening to lectures. I’m a visual learner so I’ve been learning most of the content for assignments from YouTube

I think the one improvement is to make sure that they understand how to work the different features of Zoom. Also to make sure they have a stable internet connection to teach from. Lastly I don’t feel that having everyone’s microphone on during exams is necessary and it’s distracting during an exam.

More examples

none

Move a little slower when lecturing over zoom, when trying to write down notes it can be hard when there is no “pause” button and they are scrolling up the screen past the previous notes. Also using their power as “host” of the zoom call to mute EVERYONE would make for less distractions and accidental un-muting by students. Also, the online labs, specifically for CE 400 have been somewhat difficult to understand and grasp; simply uploading 12+ pdfs and spending over 2 hours trying to explain them doesn’t really cover it. Maybe it’s already been done but I believe the labs should be lessened now that they are online because a 4 part lab was quite difficult to try to navigate through that many documents and little instruction online. Maybe more videos explaining the actual process of the experiment and calculations rather than just PDFs would be useful. Because a 2+ hour long zoom meeting is also hard to hold onto or rewatch for content.

More leniency.

I would say improve their equipment quality. A major gripe I have with many of my professors is that they use PowerPoint too much and don’t rely on writing stuff down on a document camera. I think a far better alternative would be to use tablets such as a digital writing pad or Surface Pro device to livestream OneNote where they can draw diagrams and examples that can be easily followed.

Make sure all like lectures are recorded so we can go back and rewatch them as needed.

Some posting clear lecture notes and guidelines for the class Others not really

Less use of the breakout rooms. All we ever do is sit in an uncomfortable silence in them and never get anything done

Care as much as their online teaching as they do in person

Go a little slower in class, I understand it is hard to fit all the information into one class period but I am having trouble keeping up in notes.

There really isn’t anything the isssue is myself, I have not motivation to learn if the class is on my home computer and I can do other things while class is going on.

I’m not sure I could specifically name anything that the professors could improve upon, but the internet connection in all of the classes tend to cut out for a short while every now and then.

Stop taking in-class attendance, it only puts more stress on an already stressful situation. Students should be allowed to miss class without being penalized, especially not that they can go back and watch the lecture.

Clearer instructions and actually setting things up for online learning. My surverying class is a mess and the TA’s are giving wrong directions.

Consistancy among LMS used

Sometimes the zoom recordings take a fat minute to upload, so if that could be resolved that would be great. Also the online grid servers are kinda awful and crash a lot. The quality isn’t great either. Maybe give seniors access to the room and have specific rules on how to keep it clean.

Try to encourage the professors to include a recorded lecture for labs

Have a way we can get reminders on due dates, its challenging to keep up with everything online

Maybe more engagement during class, my professors already ask quite a bit of questions during class, which helps me stay engaged, but if all professors could ask a lot of questions, I think that would help students stay engaged.

Nothing comes to mind at the moment. Issues are usually with me and my network issues given that I live in a farm out in Lind, WA.

Introduction to surveying lab is total junk. I know people are trying bc covid but I’m not learning anything. Very frustrating hour each week flailing about online trying to understand the outside world from my room. Unfortunatly idk what can be done better other than in person lab

I don’t have any suggestions at this time.

Give less material. In-Person classes provide less destractions than online because we have real time issues with events around us.

I don’t think much could be done hence being on remote learning

Keeping us informed with their expectations and keeping us alert with what’s going on.

My professors are doing the best that they can, I think. One thing that I’m struggling with is that since I do all of my classes and homework in my room, I’m never able to separate myself from school so just making sure that they understand that would be really helpful! (I know that teaching from home can’t be easy for them either).

Giving more practice

I’d like to use Canvas rather than Blackboard, as one of my classes already does.

Include more interactive learning materials such as “clicker” type questions to give us an opportunity to test if we are learning the content. Environment change from the typical lecture setting such as group work time on a real life challenge such as Dr. Leachman’s “dropping lead pellets in his garage” experiment. Writing the notes with us (also as Dr. Leachman does in Thermodynamics) to ensure we are able to keep up. Reasonable response time for feedback on assignments (less than a week).

The only thing I’d say is that there is a lot of credit based on tests and that tests are more difficult with this new format, especially with technical things and many tests be changed to multiple choice format. That would be my one qualm. However, online in general is very difficult and depends on internet connectivity which can be problematic, but I’ve found professors to be trying their best to make this semester better and still condusive to learning

Spread out assignments more throughout the week instead of having everything due on one day.

When we have lecture over zoom, encourage participation, ask questions and wait for an answer

More engagment

Not go through the material so fast, allow plenty of time for questions and feedback on homework or lecture reviews.

N/A

nothing at the moment

Rely less on expensive online textbooks that offer no long-term use to the student.

More examples of solving problems

Checking the professors pace, sometimes they go too fast, sometimes they go too slow

I’m not sure that the Voiland College professors can do anything outside of online.

More hands on learning instead of traditional lectures.

Very detailed and explained assignments; more material outside of the Zoom lecture format; better preperations for the course; post course assignments and schedules on Blackboard / Canvas for ease of access.

Make more meaningful assignments rather than busy work

Releasing Homework solutions after due date. Making sure lecture and homework material align

I don’t think group work is very effective online. At least for the first few engineering courses when no one knows what they are doing. It’s very hard for people to work together effectively if they are not in person.

I think it’s gone great so far!

learning how to better use breakout room, knowing student ability when it comes to taking notes

Make the office hours open and not by appointment.

I am not sure

Spend more time on applications of material instead of theory

Some professors move too quickly during class while we are still writing notes

Not sure.

Not that this needs changing, since I know deadlines are very important and I always make sure to meet my deadlines! I haven’t had problems with turning stuff in on time, however I know that deadlines are important but I hope that if it is due to internet or something along those lines (as long as it wasn’t a long term assignment) that they could be understanding! They have been so far, so this isn’t a complaint or anything! I just wanted to state it for maybe other classes because I know I have issues with the internet connection like many others and it can make an assignment much more stressful and worrisome to turn in! There are just a lot of things that are different now and getting used to them and doing them well is going to take a while! Anyways thank you and I hope you take this not as a complaint cause I have not had problems with this but I know others have! Another thing to keep in mind is that there are people I know in my classes who live in different countries and I don’t know if it tells them the due date as our time or their time, so those turn ins might be a bit more difficult for them since there are some large time differences. Just another thing to keep in mind! Maybe include different timelines from other countries in the due date and time because some people are even a whole day ahead of us so it could get confusing if you don’t know the time difference! Thank you for reading this and I hope this can help the students who have been having trouble with such things since this time is difficult to navigate!!

Dont disconnect from meetings part way through, be interactive such as having in class activities to discuss problems, dont assign so much homework, avoid solely using power point presentations

Not use PowerPoint.

Open up campus and let things go back to normal

I think that my professors are making the best of a less than ideal situation, I cannot think of anything that would better the student experience given the circumstances

One of my classes does not have a calendar with projected dates and timelines for assignment. Knowing ahead of time what we need to work on would help us to plan better.

Not much at the moment

Refund a % of the tuition i paid for SINCE YOU CHANGED TO ONLINE

Nothing I can think of.

Familiarize themselves with the polling mechanism in zoom

Not go so fast bc they assume we know the material

Make sure there are no technical difficulties with microphones, screen share, etc.

Adjust better to online and not try and teach as if we’re in person

Some professors could spend a little more time on understanding their set-ups. A lot of issues that I have experienced, come from a professor not understanding what is happening on their computer.

Some of my professors seem to forget that we have other classes as well, and pile on homework that takes up all of my time. Also, my physics professor isn’t doing live lectures, and his recorded lectures are from last year when class was in person. Everytime he writes something on the board, we can’t see it

I think lab grades could have a bit more leniency considering that we are online and unable to work together in person. It really creates quite a challenge, yet little effort or accommodation is present.

During these uncertain times, I could argue that most students are having a difficult time learning and retaining useful information. I like how many lectures are recorded so students have the ability to go back and absorb information they may have missed. But I think that having the option of conceptual non-graded quizzes available for every student would really help students retain knowledge which in turn could boost their motivation to learn.

Classes are hard to learn online. Need to make more interactive

maybe slow down how much material is covered so we dont feel rushed during some lectures.

CM classes are going well. CE Surveying is a serious problem with both professor and TA’s

The work load is awful this semester. Way worse than any other semester I have had. For some reason, it feels like my professors all decided to assign more work during this more difficult time. It’s frustrating to me because a lot of it is just extra busy work that is not forwarding my education and instead taking away from the real learning. I really was hoping for a more quality experience for my last semester at WSU, but instead, it seems all teachers opted for mass amounts of busy work.

Provide demonstration videos for equipment

Alter lab classes more to provide beneficial learning through the online setup. For example, lab procedures are still laid out how they would’ve been if classes were in person, makes it hard to understand concepts. Would love to see that worked upon, especially if classes are still online in the future.

a lighter work load. with regular homework, meeting on zoom for classes, and then expecting us to watch complete lectures and videos after, then with multiple classes I have been doing homework every waking hour for the last couple weeks and still find myself falling behind. There are also assignments that me and other students i know of, have completely missed just because communication is not very good through online courses

I feel online learning takes A LOT more preparation time. The teachers who have a well prepped and deliverable lecture for solving actual problems are working the best.

I’d say instead of going through PowerPoint slides, perhaps they can do paper and pen method to go through the lecture. I think students will absorb the materials better if they are writing them down

Your pretty much doing all you can! I just know they would be better in person

Examples of past work for the assignment so we know what it’s supposed to end up like or something similar.

Be flexible with due dates

Give better instructions and give us a prieview of what we are doing in labs.

Make better use of note taking and presentation tools

Be a bit more explanatory on topics covered in previous semesters

Some teachers are relying too much on the virtual aspect. Skipping over examples on concepts and telling us to read the book. It’s better to go over examples and concepts in class because we can ask questions real time, and it’s clearer than just reading our book.

Posting: notes/PowerPoints.

I can’t think of anything to improve

Longer office hours

My Voiland College professors can communicate the students more to make my online education experience better. Being in this distance format has made things seem like everything is at much higher stakes because professors seem more aloof.

Better uses of slides and lecture time. I want more examples.

Distributing fewer assignements would be neat. Seems like many professors are handing out much more with online instruction

Avoid reading the slides. Powerpoint slides are nice for a background, but when the slides are directly read from it becomes very difficult to pay attention

Nothing online can be done to make it better. I wish labs were in person but having a live video is as close as we can get.

It would be nice if all professors had drawing tablets. Some professors are using their mouse to write and the quality is not the best.

Be all on the same platform, canvas, bb, and tophat. there is too many

At this time, I can not think of any ways to improve my educational experience.

Being more succinct

Better description of projects

n/a

going slower

Move slower during lecture

Make online assignments more streamlined. Some of my professors use Blackboard and some use Canvas and it’s just another thing I have to remember since I have to switch between the two rather than being able to see all my classes and assignments and such all on one streamlined website.

Better use of technology

Provide more time to work on assignments

Not much I can say other than have them be more responsive to email or have more office hours if possible.

He should assign more homeworks

Maybe show more examples of things

honestly, I really can’t think of anything they can improve on.

End class on time.

I know the physics TA’s need to do a whole lot better. A lot of them give very different answers to the same question, as well as feedback time is consistently delivered very late for any email (3-7 days is what I have seen from my TA and others). The TA’s also seem disorganized.

Perhaps more examples

Some of labs should have the clearer instructions for the assignments and TAs should extend the office hour because remote learning has a lot of issues and not everyone could be covered questions and understand all materials in class.

Record all lectures, post all lecture notes, all classes should post practice exams and/or study guides

Nothing

Add back pass/fail for this semester. It is way harder to make grades in online due to the worse education and the fact that 4/6 of my profs dont even have zoom lectures to learn from. They just post lazy powerpoint slides online. Make assignment due dates easier to find and localized. KC Wang is still using his website from the 80s instead of bb and some profs dont even upload their assignments to the bb calendar. It would be much better if profs all operated the same way and used bb because it would be much easier on the students and staff.

Try and go slower during lecture, since they don’t have the pulse of a room anymore they have no clue how fast they’re going.

Make a training seminar for professors to teach online or hire someone for the department to help professors.

Keep sending reminders about future test or exam dates.

Post all assignment due dates on blackboard

Nothing at this point!

screen sharing videos over zoom is unwatchable.

Not assign more work than in person classes to overwhelm us

Not using proctorU

Perhaps have more class engagement so students aren’t distracted or dozing off, it’s hard when all we’re doing is listening to them drone on and on. Maybe like a few interactive questions at the start/end of class?

Actually, I wish there was a little more to the Innovation in Design class, so far it has been a bit slow for my personal preference

Understand better how students are doing with the material

LET US WORK ON THE PA’S DURING LAB, nobody I’ve talked is getting close to finishing their programs before the due dates. It’s super stressful to build one PA off of the previous one when we can’t finish it and have no way to work on it with peers.

Give us time to ask questions; a minute for 150 students isn’t enough time

Provide topic outlines and suggested readings/videos.

use blackboard as opposed to other sites

i dunno

Give more time on tests

Nothing; they explain the content very clearly, have ample time for office hours each week, and ask and answer questions throughout the lecture

Maybe be more clear about expectations

N/A.

fix the internet connection on their zoom classes

They have a sense of humor

All use the participants yes/no and thumbs up options for getting feedback from classes during live sessions. It really slows things down when they wait for verbal feedback.

I understand that every professor has a different teaching style, but I hope the assignments on blackboard will be more clear (direct). I need to spend more time looking for assignments to find all the required documents

None

More acceptability

Sometimes its unclear when things are due, maybe just be more gracious to us because we’re all still figuring out this online thing.

Have one centralized area (like the blackboard calendar) to keep track of all dates for assignments, quizzes, and exams. If this was done, it would cut out most of the stress and make all of the other online changes much easier to adjust to. Since everything is online everything has an exact cutoff time and professors aren’t lenient about late assignments, not because they really need an assignment done by an exact time, but because it’s a huge hassel to go in and reopen an assignment for one student or change the due date. The one day we had class canceled for poor air quality, our teacher didn’t shift his class or assignment schedule, instead posting a recorded lecture online and telling us to watch it over the weekend so we don’t get off our scheduled track

The in class quizzes are difficult with people having problems with their technology. It would be a more efficient use of time to complete these quizzes in an allotted amount of time after lecture.

Not that I can think of currently.

Not much from my experience.

Unfortunately I do not have an answer to this question.

Ditch Zoom.

Not assign as many assignments in order to make up for not attending class in person

If I had to say one thing, it would probably be that we use the raise hand function so then not everybody is talking over each other.

I think at this point they are doing their best to make a bad situation better. They are all doing a good job

Less busy work

explain slower, stop at some point to let the material sink in

Slow down the pace of lecture. Don’t go overtime or start early

Provide a comfortable space for students to study, for those on campus of course.

Making projects group projects so that we can meet people easier and get help from peers on topics we are unsure about.

Have more engaging classes

A bit more organized and set due dates

Try to be more detailed when answer students’ questions

Switch to canvas because black board is not as efficient or as user friendly as canvas is.

Checking in more to see how internet connection is for students, i know many people have internet issues

Add more notes, paying more attention to chat to read questions

it is good

Nothing I can think of.

Ask for periodic feedback in each class

Being more avid in communication and offering more objective rather than purely analytical teaching techniques. I understand that professors are busy, but there have been times where I’ve waited for a while to hear back regarding HW. Following that, again, learning in a more visual, applicatory, or objective setting would challenge the students in new ways. At times, it feels like the problems being solved are endless and inconsequential.

Some courses have two professors and multiple routes for communication for one class and it makes things confusing and makes room for more student error as well as it’s just unorganized

n/a

More organized, as well as more thought out zoom lecture use.

More thorough instructions for homework.

None

No feedback

Not be online

Andy O’Fallon is great, but my other professors implement a policy of “Please interrupt me with your questions.” I think it would help the flow of the class and the class’s comprehension for the professors to follow a “save your questions to the end of this section” approach.

N/A

None

Definitely slow down. This feedback is not for all professors of course, but some of my professors move very fast with no clarification or explanation for what they are doing. One of my classes, my professor just does mathematical equations all class but doesn’t cover the meaning of them and their purpose in depth.

It’s going pretty well for me

Don’t try to make them more interactive with breakout rooms and everything. It just makes things more difficult and confusing then it needs to be

Just paying more attention to written communication. Given the option, I think it’s more comfortable to just type something over speaking on a recorded call.

I don’t think there is much they could do to improve. I know I am struggling with the speed of the lectures and the courses in general, but I think this is just because I am not incredibly familiar with the material already.

The one could quit

I think they all are doing a great job

The in person labs are painful for thermal systems, especially since they aren’t telling us what data they are showing us or why. It would be better to have them recorded first and fi

None

N/A

nothing

Maybe better reaching out

Consistency with assignments and a comprehensive list of what/when things are due (even for the month). It’s hard to keep track of assignments when I have to search for them every day

Write legibly when teaching on shared screen tablets

Make it easier

Some professors required a physical group project, but individually we had to buy everything, I’d prefer if that did not happen for online class

Share the PowerPoint before class since a lot of them have pre notes which make it hard to pay attention

Do Materials Lab in person! It’s just 1 credit and meets once a week and campus is partially open…it can be figured out. The lab loses so much more value than other classes that are switched online. I.e., we learn theory in all our other classes, this class is only worth anything because we get a little hands on in a lab with testing equipment!

My SDC 100 class is on point, I would not change a thing. However, I would like there to be a bit more time to work on projects when it comes to my SDC 120 class. (Maybe it’s because I am a perfectionist and must learn to work under pressure, yet efficiently)

Mechatronics labs are hard

Cross-course consistency on where lecture, HW, Test content is organized on Blackboard.

Posting additional course materials that will help improve the learning experience, since certain subjects are harder to comprehend with just lecture.

some of the break out rooms timing are too much or too little

Better organized, I understand sometimes things happen, so I’m not to worried about it being a rough few weeks, but after Monday (09/14/2020) I already know that it will be much smoother sailing in that class.

More interactive lessons- I have a hard time paying attention to someone talking, especially at home, so solving problems throughout the lecture would help a lot. Even something small like polls over small topics to check our understanding would help a lot.

Have labs for classes be more involved rather than just giving a lab manual and expecting it to be done without any real time help.

Professor Andrew O’Fallon couldn’t do any more than he already does. He has many TAs who have their own office hours, he lectures in a clear way, and his assignments are tough, yet rewarding. Steering away from VCEA professors. It would be much more helpful if math professors included sheets of extra practice on problem sets that apply to the lectures. This would apply to other professors too. I understand we could create our own, but you asked what could help :).

Clearer written instructions would be extremely helpful for those of us who are beginners at Solidworks 2020.

Be more reachable

More review, more examples

Writing the notes down with the class instead of just showing the slides.

Communicate with classes more. Rather than assuming everyone is understanding the material. Should have accommodated global campus more since all students transitioned to global platform.

More examples during lectures and more tips on a certain hw

putting a schedule up when everything is due

Provide us more discussion about the labs before we watch the lab video.

More tutoring options.

No need for any improvements. It is well as it is.

Better cameras when showing examples or writing in real life along with better microphones so they don’t cut out at all

For each course maybe include a general questions and answers section. Sometimes in lectures students will be asking the same question over and over again. If students has a study group or discord created for the course, maybe provide the students with an area to promote it.

More opportunities to form study groups

Nothing I can think of for the professors but if there was a way to meet other fellow SDC students online and be able to interacte in some way that would be amazing.

Laying out their blackboard pages in a similar manner. Actually updating the blackboard calendar with due dates so I don’t have to check 5 different locations every day. I have spent way too many hours just organizing what I have to do rather than actually doing the assignments.

More office hours

Figure out a better way to submit homework, it’s ridiculous to have to pay to do hw.

Lightening course load and focusing on cementing ideas, instead of flying through concepts just to cover material

Improve the online lab experience.

Perhaps reduce workload as we are online

Increase the number of notifications sent out to students to keep them more informed on updates to assignments, due dates, etc.

break out sessions for students to interact in zoom.

Be sure to explain projects fully

Less homework

Nothing that i can think of.

Acquire proper microphones. It’s 2020. It’s unbelievable they are allowed to provide a paid service such as online college without a proper steaming set up. GET THEM MICROPHONES THAT WORK PELASE.

Routinely post lecture recordings (only one of my teachers doesn’t do this, but I wish they would)

some teachers could improve on being more descriptive and explanatory. some could go into more detail with their content they are teaching. maybe engage with the students a little more.

Better organization and giving due dates in advance instead of deciding sometime after giving the assignment

Something about being online makes the professors go super fast through the lecture

Professors are doing a good job but tech problems such a mics cutting out or limited bandwidth make learning difficult. More example problems would be nice. Posting the homework so we can work on it after class instead of waiting to post hw untill we cover all material on it would improve retention.

Provide lecture notes

Some of my professors don’t fully understand their tools, so they waste time trying to figure it out live during a lecture. Very frustrating as a student and it makes learning more difficult.

Provides writing lecture note or commenting on slides

not sure

Fix Zoom technical issues, provide a more in depth syllabus

For me personally, I do not think I can enjoy online learning.

Maybe if online classes were a bit longer, but I know thats hard due to volume and time

actually do zoom

Recorded lectures are more useful for learning material than live lectures, however live lectures are nice for questions so having some sort of balance would be nice.

I think for the scenario we are in it is going very well

Can’t think of anything right now.

Post homework earlier to allow for disability accomodations

The online class recordings are very nice to re-watch, so if professors could make sure the zoom recordings were up to date on blackboard that would be a big help.

If possible, use less powerpoint and more handwritten notes

I have found that communication can be difficult when working online, things can get lost in email. So having clear communication is something we can all improve upon.

Dr. Olsen is doing great and doesn’t need to improve on anything

include examples in lectures

I don’t know.

Personally I think, they are doing a great job and they are doing their best to make us feel welcome.

More participation

Communication in general can always be improved upon. Like asking how we are doing with a certain format and if it is working for us as students

More time to submit quizzes in class.

just a personal opinion, i think the course load is abit too much for online classes because students have to deal with 3-4 assignments at once, not to mention that being at home or anywhere beside from in the actual already reduced the productivity and creativity of a student.

N/A

Make professors use the same learning platforms (Blackboard, Canvas, Crowdmark, etc). It is annoying to check multiple platforms, including shared Google Docs and OneNote files.

The one professor I have is doing great. There is nothing that immediately comes to mind.

Not make us use their own website.

To many varients on types of online websites they use for assignments

Remind people of assignments, sometimes they get placed in different boxes and we can’t find them

Make sure we are well prepared for exams with test review meetings.

stick to the time shceduled for the class

IDK, my Voiland teachers have been really good

Not really.

Honestly I don’t like black board that much and wish we just switched fully to canvas. Other than usability issues I think my Voiland professors are doing very well.

More example problems online or extra resources online

Not just read from slides for FE review

Outside help, experience and connections it be outside speaker I so know of a instructor that brings guests lectures and it helps . But even taking about resources for undergraduate Architecture such as internships or design tools. More outside help on what is relevant to what is being learn.

Learn how to fully use Zoom.

They could all be prepared with the same internet skills and at leats everyone knows how to work with the systems. They can also be pushed to be structured and organized when teaching. One of my calc 3 profs. Is all over the place when he lectures, it horrifying.

There’s nothing that I think is missing from my online experience.

Everything to this point has been adequate.

Just continue to answer questions and understanding if we have connection problems.

Needed software like solidworks or MS Project are not clear where or how to download

Understand that some students have children and spouses who are also working from home.

I have a professor for the networks class whose assignments are not very clear and the class has struggled through it. It sounds like he thinks is straight forward, but the questions do not follow the slides very well. I would appreciate if the homework came out of the slides/lecture and use the same nomenclature, that way we can follow better what is asking us to do.

Not sure, given the circumstances

You’re doing great

N/A

I think that my MSE professor could post the zoom recordings since i had a problem attending once and cant watch what i missed

They are already doin great

Have clearer instructions and make it easier to find course information, i.e. have tabs for assignments, ect. The blackboard site is slightly confusing, the total move onto it seemed to leave some aspects to be desired.

No suggestions, they’re both great!

Update the calendar

The overall quality of the lectures has decrease because many of my professors struggle with using technology. I think to make it better, my professors could work to learn how to better use the online platforms such as zoom to give live demonstrations/better examples. Also, my professors could require the videos to be turned all for all students to receive participation making it feel more like a classroom.

The laziness. I’m incredibly dissatisfied with the physics 201 professors and TA’s. They have done little to non to help out us students with learning the basic material. And the mathematics 216 instructor is unable to clearly teach a point and is scattered with his work and questions. For what I am paying for I’m unsatisfied with those two professors

n/a

Actually have at least one zoom call a week for us to get to know them

They could post lecture slides and make the quizzes easier. In ChE310 we had 15 min for 3 really difficult problems and no time for submission.

If each unit could be laid out on blackboard the same way they are in global campus classes, that would be great.

A more consistent method of writing could be nice, some professors are writing digitally (which can suffer in terms of legibility sometimes if they aren’t accustomed to it), and some use a webcam or other camera pointed at a notebook (can suffer from lighting issues or bad focus). Solutions could be providing training on certain digital writing softwares, or providing better resources to professors to have more consistent image quality if they are writing by hand. (Both these methods are preferrable to powerpoint, writing alongside a professor as they write their notes has been the best format for me to learn)

Understanding that students don’t always feel comfortable over Zoom and prefer to communicate via email, not getting offended when a student disagrees or points out that material wasn’t covered in class

Maybe a little bit more lenient on the grading

Make lab experiences better. My tas can be inaccessible and then take weeks to get back labs

Work with technology more. One proff still cant open their zoom chat, and at this point, just like any student, they should seek help to remedy the situation.

Other professors could do lab videos (like for surveying) rather than just giving us data to manipulate.

Possibly explain more of what they are looking for for labs and lab reports.

Give us more time.

Improve the use of blackboards, make the interface more user-friendly, and improve the network environment, and reduce the number of classes

Make the zoom link on the front page of their blackboard class. I had to learn where the zoom link was for each class

Have microphones and projectors that work before showing up to class.

I’d rather not have online class. The students haven’t nearly learned as much as if we were in seat.

Use the calendar function of blackboard. Please!

Clearer assignment directions.

Having homework in similar places on blackboard would be helpful. Each professor seems to make it a easter egg hunt to find which file or folder they have hidden the homework in.

Get my graded assignments back to me more promptly.

They could provide more links to resources/youtube videos to help us hunker down on the material. (An example of this would be like 3Blue1Brown for math, something similar for CS)

I wish some of my labs were more interactive and utilized breakout rooms so I could get to know people.

Organized Blackboard content folders.

Be clear with requirements.

Some professors should be more available

Comments on Positive College actions

What, if anything, has Voiland College done well in the past few weeks that has helped your transition to online learning?

Taught class by using whiteboard on computer and lecture slides

help teach about online resources

Regularly posting announcements on student success and main pages, FAQs and resources

….. The weekly emails have become more essential to me

Sending out emails periodically about everything happening that month! I’m able to put all the info straight into my calendar!

VCEA tutoring really helps

Professors are fine but could change is a better out reach from students to students since they are the ones that make for a better college experience

At first there how to guides

None

homework

Nothing

Making classes easier because of all this new online stuff

weekly meetings

For me, the college helped me keep up with various events that are going on, as well as what’s happening throughout the college/university.

none

The Voiland College has been actively provided some of the best resources to ensure student success.

nothing

I found the transition to online learning to be fairly easy since I did it for most of the spring last year. I really enjoyed all of the zoom discussions that VCEA hosted over the summer on various topics. I particularly enjoyed the pannel discussion on women in STEM. These zoom sessions helped me get into a college mindset and commit myself to having a heavier course load as I would not have the social aspects of in person college.

Nothing

Can’t really think of anything, only ones that seem to be able to do much about it is the teachers

Post recorded lectures as well as live

Voiland College has done a good job at communicating with students about opportunities that are being offered remotely.

Be flexible, talk about the weekly plan, and emphasis important dates within the class.

Going over things step by step and paying attention to the chatrooms during class to answer questions.

Been positive and clear about how the class functions.

I have not directly received any help from the Voiland College that I am aware of.

They have provided numerous resources such as tutoring and surveys like this to give is every helpful tool to be successful

Probably making assignment deadline clear.

Having open schedules to meeting with students.

They give enough time for me to complete my task, which is very helpful as I get more time to review my work l.

nothing, its terrible, I hate it, and I should have taken the year off.

N/A

As I am sure most students and professors would agree, online learning is just not as good or effective as a real classroom environment. That being said, all professors and faculty have done a good job in helping with any tech support issues that have arisen. Due dates have also been very clearly stated multiple times, with plenty of time in advance. This way, if anyone has ran into any technical issues or otherwise, they have had plenty of time to be corrected.

They’ve tried to provide really clear examples for how to do things and access everything online.

office hours and online tutoring

Post stuff online.

I feel like the transition was smooth because everything was well set up on zoom and professors communicated with students prior to starting the semester.

i haven’t try to online tutoring

Leniency, extending due dates

Recording lecture is so helpful

They have communicated well.

Given instruction on how to study and focus when classes are online.

Nothing

Giving reminders every once in awhile to make sure we know when stuff is due and where is will be located in blackboard.

N/A

Giving us a lot of information about how to access practically everything online.

n/a

Everyone has been good about communicating how to submit assignments using new methods, where to find resources, where to get tutoring, etc.

Nothing comes to mind at this time

……. Staff has been helpful

No idea

Gave us time to ease into the school year

Letting students know about resources such as the engineering tutoring center has helped many students, I’m sure!

The mobile hotspot has helped. Blackboard is easy to navigate once I have learned it and the zoom meetings are helpful in that students can communicate w/ one another while the professor teaches. This enable active learning I believe. One thing I enjoyed was a recent class I had w/ Jake my ME 301 professor where he had us pair up in groups to work together and solve a problem. From there he would later go on to explain how to solve the problem to enlighten us the best method of solving the problem. I think that was pretty good.

Meh. I think I get emails. But i get sooooo many emails I’m drowning and only open the ones that look super important

Giving enough time for students to ask questions.

Made office hours more available to students and asked students thoughts on what can improve, not just professors.

Tutoring

N/A

Keeping class times at around and hour to and hour and a half, and also providing breaks in long classes

I’m kind of just figuring it out on my own, being thrust into the online learning sphere last semester was kind of the only transition I got.

Sending out weekly emails

Just patience on the professor’s part with getting used to using the different services

Provide resources such as the VCEA tutoring center and career readiness center.

NA

Compact everything into one email for the week instead of spamming like blackboard/canvas.

Helping me to find accesses to support my needs

easy to understand instructions and a convenient website

They have helped me get credit for my assignments when dealing with programs I am unfamiliar with.

Nothing specific comes to mind, in general it is just an unfortunate situation.

N/A

Firstly it was an email I sent to my instructor before the course started. I was conflicted about going to WSU or doing community, however her laid out plans for the ENGR 120 course assured me that online wasn’t going to be as bad as I sought it to be.

Professors have expressed extra leniency with students concerning network issues and learning the new format.

The weekly newsletters have been super helpful

None

Inviting environment and the communication of the College

They have sent numerous emails about all of the events going on and they have given out a lot of helpful information.

Lots of emails keeping students in the loop is great, often times many of my questions are answered in an email sent out

Prof. has had easily accessible office hours, gives clear expectations and tries to make classes run as similar to in-person classes as possible.

Chromebook

The use of Zybooks for computer science classes has been very helpful for learning and practiing the concepts in computer science class, although the workload was a bit overwhelming in the first one or two weeks. However, that was due to having to do double the amount of chapters that week.

nothing

Maintained a similar structure to in person classes

Not sure.

They have always tried to help and been accommodating! I know some people had trouble getting supplies due to different location, or some people have not been able to get their cameras to work or sound and that has been troublesome, but the staff have been helpful! I am mainly referring to the professors cause I have only interacted with professors and students as of now!

professors being flexible with due dates for the first couple weeks

Being accommodating.

Nothing

Providing resources otherwise available on campus via Zoom / Teams definitely helps. I feel like I can get any questions answered in a timely manner.

Talking a lot in the class space with classmates, TAs, and teachers during class helps soften the disassociation that distance learning has created. Not having the in-person relationship with teachers and classmates has been tough.

uploading the class recording andnotes

Willingness to help out

nothing has and nothing will

The online tutoring service has been very useful to me and has helped me in many situations. I was worried that I would have a hard time getting help if I needed it.

We were already in online learning from last semester, so it really wasn’t a transition.

Really promoted tutoring

Provided resources and information about how the semester will be taught. Classes still have been following a structure similar to being in person.

Alot of online resources

There has been a lot of emails that outline resources and contacts for help.

Been on top of emails and made communication pretty easy

Took time to answer my questions

I believe most students just have to deal with this transition and I do not think that Voiland College has done very much to help their students.

post resources to make online learning easier

nothing

Not sure. Haven’t noticed anything.

Posted helpful charts as well as making note books available from coug prints

given us work time in class

I am bombarded with resources. It is good to know where support is and how to find it,

Yes, I appreciate they VCEA continue having online tutoring to help out students

The schedule for work and assignments are very put together which is better then in class

Can’t think of anything specific

Very easy to contact if needed

Maintained virtual career building events

Everything they have done has helped transition

Encouraging studying and good amounts of homework. Not too much, not too little.

Zoom meetings: these are a great way to have online lectures.

Once again, they are very organized and passionate.

Not sure

N/A

The instructors response quick to their email.

N/A

It is very easy to get in and out of class. Additionally, all of the necessary resources are easily accessible.

N/A. Things have been relatively the same as last semester (from my point of view).

The zoom lecture recordings are great.

good material

By offering resources and guidance on how to use tools such as zoom, my transition has been made much smoother.

N/A

The office hours over zoom is nice

Updates on important online opportunities coming up

They have kept me up to date on everything that’s going on with the school via email

Been more personable and trying to connect with students

Recorded lectures

Made changes due to students needs

Zoom is a good mean of teaching

They engage the entire class during zoom

The understanding if something occurs in our lives that they are very understanding of it.

They were very clear about where to find everything on Blackboard. They keep in touch over email.

Offering vital resources such as the MLC and VCEA tutoring services.

Clearly answering questions during class and being responsive to emails.

I think professors did very well in their lectures and the network is good enough.

had live classes which helps me be more focused

Well organized Blackboard and Crowdmark sites so I don’t have to hunt for my assignments or class materials.

N/A

I have not noticed any changes from how it was in Spring 2020. VC could have made tuition cheaper since its online but that didnt happen

Not sure.

Holding virtual Zoom office hours in case I have further questions.

Been very patient and understanding that this is new to everyone and problems will and do happen.

They provided information for things happening in the college

I enjoy being put into groups for assignments because then I get to work with classmates who are also in the same boat!

emphasize the tutoring hours

Made sure to keep as many students as possible involved, not matter how far away we are.

Asynchronous classes, easy to understand and access video lectures

I think professors and TA’s are grading a little easier which has been very helpful, if not many of us would be failing all our CS classes.

Reached out multiple times to see if I needed anything. For example, tutoring was offered to me.

Just the regular, conducting classes as scheduled

recorded all lectures, kept everything as similar to in person as possible

Zoom

There have been a lot of announcements of events and important information

Ready to teach online, few technical difficulties

They explain the material very clearly, and always try to answer our questions we could have. The additional notes and videos helps us learn the softwares much better.

nothing

idk

N/A

As I said. the Cloud Recordings are the only thing making this workable for me presently.

All the professors are very patient. They will try to answer every question I ask. They not only tell me how to do it, but also teach me the way to solve the problem from the source

None

I’ve been online learning since April, so I know what to expect.

Zoom meetings and office hours help a lot

The professors are very willing to help over email or zoom calls in addition to their office hours.

Mentioned before, but the recording of the sessions makes it easy to deal with any issues that may arise during the classes.

Lots of emails about activities and opportunities outside of class, helping things feel more normal.

I was already doing online learning before this semester at Clark college, so I do not have an answer to this question.

N/A

I’m not quite sure if the resources that voiland college has in regards to online learning

my engineering advisor has reached out to me about scheduling time to meet with me and the college itself has sent me multiple emails about how I can stay connected and continue to get more involved.

Slow start

Communications have been clear

The tutoring center is very nice

Nothing really, this has been going on long enough that I’m used to it

More motivated and the pace is better.

I haven’t used it yet, but the college offers zoom tutoring sessions.

Made everything very clear and accurate.

Sent out helpful emails about current events happening at WSU

it is good

Being open for questions and help.

Not that I can think of. Haven’t had an interaction.

Offering a very clear transition to online learning has been wonderful. The resources needed are centralized and I don’t need to create accounts all over the place or hop between web resources in order to solve problems. This helps greatly in keeping track of work and moving forward on all fronts..

Allowing for some asynchronous classes and holding a lot of office hours

n/a

They are all understanding

Helpful

None

Nothing particular comes to mind, but I am a freshman so I guess I wouldn’t know the difference.

I enjoyed the kick-off meeting where I was informed about different services that are offered to me.

Interacting with the lesson

Voiland College has done well with making the transition smoother than expected with lots of resources to help if necessary.

Being very understanding with issues of being online

Voiland College has offered numerous online resources for me to access whenever I need help. Mostly, I can meet with professors and TAs during their office hours multiple times a week, or contact tutors when I need help.

I really appreciate that the team has reached out and see how we are doing.

I appreciate the classes being taught as scheduled

E-mails about events

Providing class materials in a timely manner that allows for the inevitable lag when downloading papers, printing assignments, and uploading documents to Blackboard.

nothing

Gave me many resources

Being consistent

Definitely having our schedule and assignments in a location that does not have to be accessed via Blackboard. Professor O’Fallon has created a website specifically for the class that you can access without having to login to Blackboard if you do not have to. You can only get the link by initially logging into blackboard but if for some reason blackboard isn’t working you can still access the syllabus, schedule, and assignments. I absolutely love this!

Offered lots of information

Having office hours

n/a

I am pretty comfortable with the online format, so there was not much to adapt to besides Blaclboard which I was not used to using. I just took time exploring the app.

Nope

Free and easy access to software like Ansys. Increased communication from advisers and instructors.

The tutoring service through zoom has been really helpful.

I feel like they made it much easier than last year before the Spring semester went fully online.

Staying very clearly when assignments are due, being available at many different times to provide help on homework

It has been easy to find the links to zoom sites which in turn allows me to be confident in joining my classes.

I don’t think it has to do with the Voiland College but rather the professors. They are the ones who guide the students in their first year it seems. So hooking up instructors with more mandatory things they need to include in their first week might be a good option if you want to push something. I had no problems transitioning to online learning other than I wish all assignments would be on one calendar that way I could plan ahead. Of course we could do this ourselves, but again, you asked for my opinion. The problem where I see this is MyMathLab from Pearson has its own assignment pages, blackboard has its own assignment page, mastering physics has its own assignment page, and assignments are not all submitted the same way. One of my instructors has us uploads pdfs on blackboard. The other has us do essentially the same thing but on crowdsource instead. Summary: It would be nice for assignments to all be submitted the same way (I can see problems with this) and for them to be listed on one calendar.

The TA for MECH 103, Josh Chen, has been incredibly helpful.

They did offer lots of help about online classes

Flexibility in scheduling and zoom meeting times

I am a global campus student

Communication is the key

zoom meetings

Everything.

The online tutoring has been extremely helpful but can get busy at times

Good communication on top is, good office hours

I don’t know.

Being kind and helpful when reaching out.

Have powerpoints ready before class

Advisors have been very helpful.

N/A

Added to the list of tutors in the Dana 152 tutoring center.

Given ample time to adjust to the online environment before assigning large projects

being prepared, knowing how to use zoom, microsoft office products

Understood that technical difficulties will happen and giving slack to those it effects

N/a

I’m very comfortable with online learning from yhe beginning.

Nothing.

I was already doing online school before coming to WSU so there wasn’t much of a transition. but these teachers have walked us through most things and are openly available for us when we need help or have a question. they make it easy to follow and stay on top of things.

Posting lecture videos, notes, and examples, so we could see after if we had bad internet connection sometime during the lecture

I can’t think of anything, but knowing that there are people I can contact for help from the college is very reassuring, especially during this semester when online classes makes everything more stressful.

All zoom meetings are reserved and providing previous zoom lecture recordings

resources available to students (such as live zoom meetings)

The college itself has not done anything to help me transition

Office Hours and being quick to respond to the emails, the TA’s as well

yes

All of my professors have been excellent at communicating expectations

Not sure. I’m familiar with online learning already.

Access services being online

The college has been very good in communicating events that are still taking place even with online class.

The online engineering tutoring center has helped me significantly in the past weeks with most of my classes.

NA

Showing me where to find tutoring sessions.

Letting us study using PDFs, making the homework easily accessible with blackboard, canvas and so on.

Virtual events have helped keep the feeling of being involved on campus

Providing tutoring

supports

I don’t know

N/A

The Voiland College has reached out and sent emails about helpful zoom meetings that have definitely made an impact. This was before school started though. I don’t know if I would have the time to go to them now.

Teachers are technologically prepared.

Very helpful and understanding

Teachers are enthusiastic during lecture which makes me want to listen where in the past you could tell no one wanted to be there

I’m not sure.

tutorial videos

Posting all the hours

Good awareness with resources

I think they have a very clear schedule with well made due dates and assignments as well I really like my lab group which is great because I have new friends.

Workshops

The emails have definitely helped with smooth transition

Sent plenty of emails and have posted everything on Blackboard in a timely manner.

Nothing, i havent seen them do anything.

Their communication! It’s helped made this online experience still feel connected even though I’m not on campus.

Tech ready checklists, and I believe they did a ‘techready’ class before classes started.

Just sending updates on the newsletter.

Using a lot of notifications over email is useful to stay informed and up to date

Nothing new.

Communication has improved!

The take home lab kit is nice

Emailing updates with important information

N/A

I dont know about the last few weeks, but i really liked the major specific into zooms in the summer

I’m not sure if the college has done anything specifically.

I actually transferred from CWU, and I took classes online there this past spring due to COVID so I was already pretty prepared for online courses. The “4 things to know” weekly email blasts are helpful to give me an idea of workshops or opportunities that may be coming up in the next few days.

Made tutoring very accessible.

The variety of tutors available

Recorded lectures

lots of emails about due dates is nice

I’m not sure.

I’m not aware of things that have been done to make the transition easier, seems similar to last semester, just without the surprise factor.

Provided intro to Zoom resources (haven’t personally used)

Very little amount of homework for sdc 100

Zoom not asynchronous

Not sure… I am sure the college is doing a lot? My adviser is always responsive and helpful.

Continue to give events and resources that help meeting new people, getting involved, and feeling comfortable with one’s schedule and course load.

N/a

They arranged many sessions to introduce students in detail to the process of online learning and how to seek help

Very friendly and positive

Communicated very effectively.

N/A

provided links to useful resources to aid online learning

The informational emails help a lot.

Providing unrestricted zoom access is indispensible.
