But if an accident happens\u2026<br>Timing Is Everything!<\/p>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n<div style=\"height:19px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>WSU policy requires that <strong>major injuries be reported immediately<\/strong>, and <strong>all other injuries be reported within 24 hours<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Report all workplace injuries to your supervisor as soon as possible, and seek medical treatment if needed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-callout wsu-dropshadow--high wsu-border--color-vineyard wsu-max-width--xlarge wsu-color-background--gray-5 wsu-spacing-after--xxmedium\" >\r\n    <h2 class=\"wsu-callout__title\">\r\n        Prompt Reporting&#8230;    <\/h2>    \n\n<ul>\n<li>Eliminates delays in benefits to individuals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Benefits the accident investigation and the employee(s) involved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complies with mandatory reporting laws and regulations (e.g. State of Washington Department of Labor and Industries, Division of Occupational Safety &amp; Health)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Influences penalties and\/or fines that could potentially be issued<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accidental injury and work-related illness reporting includes the following:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol>\n<li>Get help. Call for emergency medical assistance when required; telephone <a href=\"tel:911\">911<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/2-00-contents\/2-24-reporting-accidental-injuries-work-related-illnesses\/#offices\"><strong>Report major injuries immediately. <\/strong>See Reporting Major Accidents table below to notify appropriate University offices.<\/a>\n<ul>\n<li>Major injuries include chemical\/biological exposure, bone break\/fractures, amputation, in patient hospitalization or death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Report all minor injuries <strong>within 24 hours<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Minor injuries should be reported the same day as quickly as possible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minor injuries that occur over the weekend or outside of regular business hours (Monday through Friday, outside of 8 am to 5 pm, or over a WSU holiday) should be:\n<ul>\n<li>Reported the next business day, if reporting could be completed in 24 hours from the injury.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reported to WSU Police, if reporting would fall outside of 24 hours from the time of injury. WSU Police&#8217;s non-emergency number is <a href=\"tel:5093355848\">509-335-5848<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reporting Procedures\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Best practice:<\/strong> Always notify WSU Environmental Health &amp; Safety (EH&amp;S) of any injury. EH&amp;S typically investigates injuries and accidents that occur at WSU. They are highly skilled at helping those involved, supervisors, and those assisting, throughout the reporting and investigation process. EH&amp;S can be reached at <a href=\"tel:5093353041\">509-335-3041<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow WSU <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/2-00-contents\/2-24-reporting-accidental-injuries-work-related-illnesses\/#offices\">SPPM 2.24<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Follow WSU <a href=\"https:\/\/hrs.wsu.edu\/managers\/incident-report\/\">HRS Incident Reporting Process<\/a>.\n<ul>\n<li>Submission of an online Incident Report is required from the responsible supervisor within 24 hours. Reference the <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/2-00-contents\/2-24-reporting-accidental-injuries-work-related-illnesses\/#form\">Incident Report Form Completion<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Federal employees and\/or non-employee injuries may need to report differently using the <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/2-00-contents\/2-24-reporting-accidental-injuries-work-related-illnesses\/#nonemployee\">non-employee reporting steps<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/2-00-contents\/2-24-reporting-accidental-injuries-work-related-illnesses\/#nonemployee\">.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supervisor needs to notify HRS in the event that the injury creates time loss from work. HRS can be reached at <a href=\"tel:5093351760\">509-335-1760<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Supervisors are required to notify the unit\u2019s top administrator, the unit\u2019s safety committee chair, and the Chair of the <a href=\"https:\/\/vcea.wsu.edu\/foss\/safety-committees\/\">Voiland College Safety Committee<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Need help reporting? Contact your unit&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/vcea.wsu.edu\/foss\/safety-committees\/\">Safety Committee Chair<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Completion of an <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/documents\/2017\/10\/2-26-supervisors-accident-investigation-report.pdf\/\">accident investigation report (PDF)<\/a> is required if:\n<ul>\n<li>Employee\/person receives medical treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Employee is unable to work their next full shift as a result of the injury.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Events and conditions related to a near miss, or minor accident, indicate that a potentially serious injury or illness could result from a similar situation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Comply with the investigative process, should an investigation ensue per, <a href=\"https:\/\/policies.wsu.edu\/prf\/index\/manuals\/2-00-contents\/2-26-investigating-accidents\/\">SPPM 2.26<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:24px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-callout wsu-max-width--xlarge wsu-color-background--white wsu-border--color-autumn wsu-border--add-top\" >\r\n    <h3 class=\"wsu-callout__title\">\r\n        Examples of reportable instances:    <\/h3>    \n\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Injury: <\/strong>Any wound or damage to the body resulting from an instantaneous event. Some examples include; cuts, bruises, contusions, chipped teeth, amputations, insect bites, electrocutions, burns, sprains, injuries to muscles, joints, and\/or connective tissues, as well as any slips, trips, or falls.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Illness: <\/strong>A condition resulting from chronic exposure to the work and\/or academic environment.
