PULLMAN, Wash. The journey from Washington State University student to supervisor of some of the largest infrastructure projects in North America will be discussed by alumnus Scott Cassels at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 9, in WSU Communications Addition (CADD) 21.
Executive vice president of Kiewit Corporation responsible for more than 5,000 employees, Cassels will present “The Ultimate Journey Through the Industry’’ as part of the Constructing America lecture series sponsored by the WSU School of Design and Construction.
Kiewit is a $10 billion Fortune 500 construction, engineering and mining organization serving North America and Australia. The company is the third largest general contractor in the United States and is in the top 10 for coal production.
Cassels has executive leadership responsibility for Kiewit’s Infrastructure Group, the company’s largest business unit, which includes projects up to several billion dollars in size across the United States and Canada in the transportation, heavy civil and water/wastewater markets.
Cassels’ employees are responsible for building some of North America’s largest infrastructure projects, including: the Dallas/Fort Worth Connector project in Texas; the Port Mann/Gateway project in Vancouver, B.C.; and the Hebron gravity-based, oil and gas structure off the coast of Newfoundland.
Cassels was elected to Kiewit’s board of directors in 2004. He holds leadership roles in key industry and business organizations, including the board of directors of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, where he is also co-chairman of U.S. transportation policy committee.
He is active in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Let’s Rebuild America committee. He has served on several boards, including for the American Heart Association and the River City Roundup in Omaha, Neb.
Cassels holds bachelor’s degrees in construction management and business from WSU and attended Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management Executive Development Program.
The Constructing America lecture series was established in 2004 to provide a forum for industry leaders to present topics that affect the built environment in the development, design and construction of America’s infrastructure. The series’ goal is to bring together the university, community and industry to network and open a dialogue on critical issues that affect the field of construction management and business development.
