Whether it’s a career expo, information session, networking event, or interview, it can be hard to get noticed, especially in a good way. Luckily, there are a few things you can do ahead of time to help yourself stand out above everyone else there.

Do your homework. Before you ever go to a networking event or interview, you should start by researching the company or companies you will meet, or have the opportunity to meet, and pick out your “A” list and “B” list (those you plan to meet and the back-up companies). Once you know the connections you want to make, spend some time researching those companies’ websites. Go over their mission statement and try to memorize their core values so you can mix those words into your conversation. You should also have a general idea of what that company does and any major projects they are working on right now (Google them).

Put together and practice your “elevator pitch”. You may be asked, “Tell me about yourself” in an interview or you may only get a few minutes, or less, to talk to each recruiter at the Career Fair. Regardless of the situation, make sure you know how you’re going to introduce yourself and what you can say to show them that you are the perfect candidate for their company. Try to practice before you go by talking to yourself in the mirror or trying it out on a family member, roommate, or friend. Remember to smile!

Dress for success. Always make sure you are dressed appropriately for the event. Most of the time this means business professional. Depending on the situation, you may be able to get away with business casual, but remember it’s always better to overdress than underdress. That being said, don’t wear a tux or ball gown unless there is a dress code that specifically tells you to.

Be confident! All the employers and recruiters at these events are there because they want to meet YOU! Make sure you start out with a big smile and a firm handshake. This one can be easier said than done, but the more you practice and the more you talk to employers, the easier this will become. Just remember that you are a valuable potential employee, and any company would be lucky to hire you!

Ask questions. Recruiters want to get to know you, but they also want you to get to know the company! Try to stay away from basic questions and ask questions that go more in depth about the company. This should be easy if you did your research!

Use their name and find common ground. It can be easy to forget that recruiters are more than just a person you need to impress. They have lives and have been in your shoes at some point in their life. Say their name back to them and use it throughout the conversation. Ask about their personal experiences with the company, and if you can, try to find something you both have in common outside of work. You have to be more than technically proficient; employers also want you to fit in with the social aspect of the company!
