During this time of uncertainty and confusion, we know that it can seem nearly impossible to find employment. Internships have been cancelled, employees have been laid off or furloughed, and the number of companies looking for new hires seems to be dwindling. However, there are still opportunities out there for students looking for employment if you know how to look for them.

  1. Expand your job search. Think short-term about your job options. It’s important to focus on right here and now and finding a source of income. You don’t have to find your dream job yet. Check out the Parker Dewey Micro Internships.  They offer virtual, paid, short-term positions in most areas of study.  If you just need to make some cash, many grocery stores are hiring as well as shipping, communication, and online learning companies.
  2. Get comfortable networking online. There won’t be any networking opportunities in-person for some time. Explore and utilize online resources such as LinkedIn, Handshake, and Facebook.
  3. Utilize contacts. If you have a family, friend, or professional contact in a business that is still operating, consider reaching out to them and asking about job opportunities.
  4. Apply, apply, apply. Now, more than ever, it’s important to cast a wide, but targeted, net. With the lack of jobs and large pool of applicants, it may be difficult to even secure an interview. Use your network to help you find opportunities and land an interview.
  5. Stay in touch. If you haven’t heard back from a hiring manager after a promising interview, make sure to follow-up with an email that expresses interest and understanding during this difficult time.
