Growing up on the westside, I had many friends whose parents were proud WSU alumni, and their pride was contagious. It was the sense of community and strong identity that WSU students share that ultimately won me over when I was choosing colleges. Plus, there\u2019s just something special about the rolling hills of the Palouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I chose civil engineering after being exposed to the basics through a mentorship program called ACE. I participated for two years and learned from civil engineers who had decades of experience in their field. That inspired me to come into college as a civil engineering major and after meeting some great friends and taking fun classes, I stuck with it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-font-size--large\">Why would you recommend attending Washington State University? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The student life at WSU is among the best in the country. Although engineering can be challenging, the people at WSU\u2014both students and faculty\u2014are some of the most remarkable individuals I have encountered. In my first year, I formed a solid group of engineering friends with whom I could study and socialize outside of class. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having a great student life turns into a strong alumni network post-graduation. Our alumni are extremely passionate about being Cougs, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ascc.wsu.edu\/channels\/career-expo\/\">our annual Career Fair<\/a> features many WSU alumni actively seeking to hire fellow Cougs. Throughout my college career, I secured all three of my internships through connections with WSU alumni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-font-size--large\">What advice do you have for fellow or prospective students?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My advice would be to get involved in as many activities as possible. The more you go out and participate, the more people you will meet. <a href=\"https:\/\/asce.wsu.edu\/\">The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE)<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/swe.wsu.edu\">Society of Women Engineers (SWE)<\/a> are excellent clubs to join! It doesn\u2019t have to be related to engineering; consider joining an intramural team or a club that aligns with your interests. The more connections you have, the more likely people will think of you for important roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-font-size--large\">What has been your favorite class or program that you have been involved with at WSU?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My favorite class has been Surveying with Dr. Olsen. I enjoyed going outside and using the tools and methods we covered in class. The lab sessions for surveying provided valuable hands-on experience, and I was even able to apply some of the concepts during my internship over the summer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-font-size--large\">What have you learned during your time at WSU, that will help you most in your future?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have learned the importance of getting involved. In high school, I was not super involved as I only attended events that I had to go to or those my friends were attending. However, since starting college, I have realized the value of stepping out of my comfort zone and participating in activities that interest me. There are so many opportunities available on a college campus, and I encourage everyone to take advantage of them! I believe this<br>approach will be beneficial for me in the future as it will help me make connections in my field and improve my skills through conferences and workshops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading  wsu-font-size--large\">Have you participated in any internships related to your field of study? <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I have completed three internships during my time in college: two summers in general contracting and one in civil consulting. During my two summers in general contracting, I gained a foundational understanding of the construction industry and saw how design concepts are transformed into an actual structure once construction begins. However, I realized that my true passion lies in design. Last year, I worked as a civil engineering intern at a civil consulting firm, where I applied what I was learning in my classes to real-life projects. I designed stormwater drainage plans, familiarized myself with various jurisdictional codes, and visited project sites to address any questions related to our designs. Internships have helped me solidify what type of job I want to work post-graduation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading wsu-font-size--large\">What do you want to do with your degree after you graduate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduation, I will work as a Water Resources Engineer in the Seattle area! I hope to get my Professional Engineering license (PE) in four years and possibly go to graduate school in the future.
