We ask electrical engineering major Julian Herrera for his thoughts on what makes WSU such a special place.

Julian Herrera.

What made you decide to attend WSU?

I liked the atmosphere of the small town. I have always had an interest in computers and I decided to learn more.

What has been your favorite class or program that you’ve been involved with at WSU, and why?

My favorite class would certainly be EE476 with Professor Danny Berco. The lecture structure was centered around discussion and really taking the time to explain everything thoroughly. The class pacing combined with Danny’s enthusiasm made the class enjoyable and encouraged my growth in the subject. I don’t think I have ever been more motivated to go to class.

What clubs are you involved in on campus?

I am the president of HAM Radio club. Club engagement has helped me loosen up from all the stress of such rigorous coursework and expectations.

Why would you recommend attending Washington State University?

I would recommend WSU because it really does feel like people want you to succeed. Professors are inspiring and always available when you need them. Students and fellow classmates create a community for you that prevents you from feeling alone. Other than being on track to graduate, I have benefitted a great time out of WSU.

What advice do you have for fellow or prospective students?

I would recommend talking with people. Creating community and study groups heavily facilitates success. Join clubs that you are interested in but don’t let the club take away from your academic focus. Tutoring is always helpful. Most importantly, go to office hours! Professors are your best resource and they love helping students learn what they dedicated their research towards. When I got stuck in a course I went to office hours and it got cleared up within the hour.
