What makes Washington State University’s Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture stand out from the crowd for those looking to get a degree?

We ask interior design major Sierra Rothlisberger for her thoughts on what makes WSU such a special place.

Sierra Rothlisberger.

Name: Sierra Rothlisberger

Expected Date of Graduation: May 2024

Major: Interior Design Graduate program, minor in Construction Management

Hometown: Chelan, WA

Activities: ASID, Integrated Design + Construction Laboratory
Scholarships: Regents Scholarship, Presidents Honor Roll

Q: Why did you choose interior design as your major?

A: In high school, my favorite/best subjects were math, art, and psychology, and I wanted to be in a field where I could somehow incorporate all three. I love interior design because it has a great balance of rules and codes to follow, creativity, and a human connection.

Q: What made you decide to attend WSU?

A: Hands down, the School of Design and Construction. In high school, I toured their studio spaces and absolutely fell in love.

I knew I needed a program that would challenge me and set me up for post-graduation success, and that’s what the programs here do. Not only that, but you get to do it in such a supportive community.

Q: What have you learned in your major, or experienced in your classes or your activities during your time at WSU, that will help you most in your future?

A: One of my favorite parts about the design disciplines is how inter-connected they are. You can’t do architecture without the construction managers, who can’t do it without the landscape architects, and so on. It gives you a chance to dabble in everything and make many more connections.
