Your workplace behavior has potential to elevate you through the ranks of your company but also the power to put you out of a job, so it is very important to understand the written and unwritten rules in your workplace. In a recent article by Indeed Career Guide, they went over 13 best practices for following proper etiquette, we are going to go over the big 5.
1. Show respect
Whether it be as simple as staying off your phone during presentations or not interrupting your coworkers while they talk, it is important to always act respectfully to your peers.
2. Dress appropriately
Depending on the company you work for, there will be a different dress code for the office. Be sure to read the company handbook and understand whether you need to dress business casual or more professional.
3. Be reliable
Being punctual is an easy way to make a good impression, whether it be showing up to work on time every day or getting your tasks done by the deadline.
4. Keep work and personal life separate
Try not to talk too much about your personal life at work as it may make people feel excluded, or you may accidently offend someone.
5. Engage in meetings
If the meeting is online, be sure to turn on your camera and keep your microphone muted unless you are speaking. If the meeting is in person, always arrive 5 minutes early and communicate to your team if you will be late. If your meeting runs long, exit the room quietly and respectfully if you have other obligations.
