Getting the School Year Underway

Dear Colleagues,

Welcome back to the start of another school year! Classes have gotten underway, and our hallways are buzzing with activity. We were excited to recently welcome everyone back to campus with our annual ice cream social and town hall meeting.

While students are settling into their classes, we’re also pleased to welcome a crop of new faculty to the college. These energetic members of our team bring new ideas in their teaching and research that are refreshing for all of us, providing new opportunities for collaboration and innovation. They promise to grow our programs in important areas such as cybersecurity, machine learning and artificial intelligence, materials, additive manufacturing, computer chip design, and building design.

Meanwhile, our faculty continue to succeed in their research and teaching. Yan Yan and Monowar Hasan recently received prestigious National Science Foundation CAREER awards. Yan will pursue research in artificial intelligence while Monowar is studying information leakage in cyber-physical systems. Anjan Bose was also recognized for his pioneering work in the automation and control of power grid operations with a lifetime achievement award from the IEEE Power and Engineering Society. We’re also excited to celebrate Yong Wang as he is inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in early October. He is being recognized with this tremendous distinction for his work in catalyst discovery, design, and reaction engineering.

Of course, your gifts are more important than ever in supporting our student and faculty success. For the first time this year, we are pleased to be able to offer full-ride scholarships to two promising engineering students, Tristan Griffith from Oak Harbor, Washington, and Theia Grady from Curlew, Washington.  What a joy to support these hard-working students with high aspirations—they just might change the world. We welcome them and all their classmates to campus for their launch into a successful future.

Your support also continues to make all the difference in modernizing our facilities. Schweitzer Engineering Hall is quickly becoming a reality, and we are continuing our efforts to develop facilities that will meet the needs of our students and faculty far into the future.

We have many exciting events coming up this fall, including the Lanning Lecture on September 23 and the Ensor Lecture on Oct. 28 that will feature leading researchers in materials science and catalysis. I hope that you can come to campus for a visit and join us for these events.

Thanks so much for your support of Voiland College, and as always, Go Cougs!
