Celebrating Excellence

Dear Colleagues,

As we come to the close of another academic year, we are proud to celebrate this year’s faculty and student accomplishments. We have much to be thankful for in the Voiland College.

Our students have received numerous awards this year, including at international conferences, as well as prestigious research fellowships from the National Science FoundationDepartment of Energy, and private foundations. Our student clubs have won top prizes at student competitions while learning valuable skills and making a difference in their communities. Whether in classrooms, laboratories, studios, research groups, internships, or student organizations, our Voiland College students learn real-world, problem-solving skills that prepare them for impactful careers and a life of continuous learning.

I also want to extend my congratulations and appreciation to our faculty and staff. Their commitment to teaching, mentoring, research, innovation, and service is the foundation of our success, and their research innovations change lives.

This year, our faculty have received several top awards. Nghia Hoang in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science received a National Science Foundation CAREER award for his research in artificial intelligence. Professor Paul Hirzel received a lifetime achievement award, and several faculty received top university awards, including the university’s distinguished faculty address, eminent facultydistinguished lifetime serviceinnovation and entrepreneurship, and legacy of excellence awards.

Our researchers developed a 3D-printed beating heart model to help medical students prepare for surgery as well as a biosensor for improved glucose monitoring for people with diabetes. Many of our faculty continue to do important work to better understand and use AI in teaching, learning, and research.

Much of our success comes about with support from our alumni, donors, and industry partnerships. We’re pleased that our partnership with Fluke Corporation will provide opportunities for hands-on training and tools that will prepare our students for the 21st century workforce. Donor support has made the difference in the construction of our new Schweitzer Engineering Hall, which will open later this year, and it was a joyous occasion this spring to celebrate some of our alumni who led the building’s design and construction. How fulfilling it is to literally see the work we do come full circle in the new building.

As we look ahead, I am confident in the strength of this community and the positive impact we will continue to have. Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and Cougar spirit.

Go Cougs.
