Certificate in Japanese Studies for Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture Majors

The curriculum for each certificate program is designed to emphasize cultural skills (language familiarity) and knowledge (cultural practices), and an appreciation of continuity and change in contemporary Chinese or Japanese society. Totaling seventeen hours, the curriculum incorporates a course on modern East Asian economic development that not only stresses the particular dynamics of Japanese or Chinese industrialization and commercialization, but also places each country in the context of East Asian regional change.

Requirements

The Certificate in Chinese Studies for Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture Majors and the Certificate in Japanese Studies for College ofEngineering and Architecture Majors each require a total of 17 credit hours. Minimum requirements include one-year (two semesters/eight credits) of Chinese or Japanese language. Students who complete two semesters of Chinese or Japanese beyond the one-year requirement may waive the three credits required from Asia 121 and Asia 315, or the three credits required from Asia 275, Asia 373, and Asia 475. Study abroad is encouraged and appropriate credit toward completion of certificate will be accepted at the discretion of the Asia Program Director. The maximum number of credit hours earned at other institutions that may apply towards each of the certificates shall not exceed four (4) credit hours. The number of pass/fail (or S/F) grades shall not exceed four (4) credit hours. Credit hours earned in the certificate program maybe applied toward a WSU undergraduate degree as general elective credit. Individual courses may also fulfill specific requirements of particular degree programs if they are required for that degree program.
