Handshake is a ‘handy’ resource when searching for jobs and internships, professional development events, networking and many more!  If you do not have a Handshake profile created, then what are you waiting for?  How to Create A Handshake (Student) AccountSee below for 5 Handshake steps to start creating your profile!  Check out our Instagram post or Facebook post for helpful images with each step.

Log in/Sign up

When you enter the Handshake website, you will be asked to either login through your school account by searching up your school’s name from the dropdown menu or you will need to select ‘I’m a Student or Alumni’ to proceed with creating your account.  Once you determine your privacy level and officially created your account, please refer to The Student On-Boarding Experience for more information!

Upload Resume

Now that you have an account created and are logged in, it is time to upload your most recent/current resume! This resume should be a general, updated resume in your documents section to make it quick and easily accessible for employers or others to reference.  Keeping your resume public on Handshake will make it readily available for employers and other individuals to see when they visit your profile.  After you have updated and uploaded your resume, you can use it to fill in your profile information.  Under the document section, there are other options to add cover letters and other related professional documents to your profile, but you do not necessarily need to make them public/visible on your profile.

Fill Out Your Profile

Fill out different areas of your profile to raise the “Profile Level” bar, or Profile Completion Bar, to make your profile more appealing to those that view your profile.  Fill out your Education Section > Work Experience > Organization and Extracurricular Activities > multiple skills, documents, courses, projects > profile picture (professional headshot is always preferred).  Do not forget to keep your information updated by editing your profile or adding more to it.  Every section must be completed in order for the progress bar to hit 100%, which includes a short bio, uploading documents, adding projects and social links.

Explore

Explore Handshake features by utilizing your home page, the top search bar, and multiple filters to search through various companies and jobs you may be interested in gaining more knowledge on or applying to.  These searches can be saved in Handshake, which makes it easier to look for relevant employers and jobs.  The various ways you could search through your homepage are from the different button sections, such as Jobs, Employers, Community, Events and Career Center.

Follow

After you explore Handshake and find the employer or job(s) that you are interested in, you can begin to filter through them based on the companies you may follow and begin to receive notifications about their events/opportunities that they are hosting.

Now that you have followed through these five steps, you will be able to use Handshake to efficiently and effectively assist you in launching your career!
