Tips for Resume Building

Keep it to a page

  • Your resume is not an all-inclusive document of your work experience, and should only be 1 page. Only list information that is relevant to the position you are applying to.

List important information and skills at the top of your resume:

  • Your resume should read from most relevant to least relevant. The most important sections in your resume will be your technical skills, your education, and your work experience/projects.

Use bullet points, NOT paragraphs in the body of your resume:

  • Information on your resume should be in short, succinct sentences written in third person and formatted with bullet points. Simple bullet points will make it more likely for your key points to get noticed and ensure more of your resume is getting read through by the recruiter.

Describe accomplishments, not tasks:

  • In the work experience section, list your most impressive accomplishments instead of tasks and responsibilities. Examples include:
    • Spearheaded the development of a new user interface that increased customer satisfaction by 20%
    • Developed and implemented a feedback system for customers to report bugs and concerns
    • Re-engineered account software systems for customers that reduced bugs by 15%
