A team of researchers, including Lloyd Smith, determined that the “torpedo” baseball bat and traditional bat perform equally well in hitting power with only a slight difference in the location of the bat’s sweet spot.
WSU’s Sports Science Laboratory has been verifying the reliability of the systems used to track hits, balls and strikes at Major League Baseball ballparks.

The Computational Intelligence for Materials and Process Innovation (CIMPI) Lab at Washington State University is offering the Summer Program in Research, Education, and Mentoring (SUPREME). Apply now for a free, 2-week summer course on AI in Manufacturing. Designed for undergraduate students, this program provides hands-on tutorials, project-based learning, small class sizes, and expert mentorship.
Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Program – Apply by Apr. 13
Applications for the Fall 2026 cohort of the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Program are now open! Scholarships available! WSU’s Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute is a multidisciplinary program for junior and senior students who are interested in technological entrepreneurship.
Apr. 17: $5,000 VCEA – ESFCOM Grant Program Applications Due
The VCEA – ESFCOM Spring 2026 Grant Program offers up to $5,000 to support the preparation and submission of a grant proposal to a federal granting agency during the 2026-2027 cycle. Funds may be used for PI salary support for grant writing, travel, equipment, or supplies, or undergraduate or graduate research assistance (per HR guidelines). The program is open to tenure-track and tenured faculty in VCEA and ESFCOM. Application Instructions: submit a one-page project overview and objectives (formatted as an NSF Project Summary or NIH Specific Aims page) by 5:00 pm on April 17, 2026 to christina.mccloy@wsu.edu.
Apr. 17: WAZZU Car Reveal
Wazzu Racing is one of the largest engineering clubs at the WSU Pullman campus. Each year, members of the team design and build a formula-style race car, which is then taken to international competitions to compete against other universities. On Friday, April 17, from 5–7 p.m. in the CUB Junior Ballroom, the club will host an event showcasing the new race car for this year.
May 6: DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program Applications Due
The 2026 DOE Office of Science Graduate Student Research Program (SCGSR) is accepting applications! This is a great opportunity for PhD students to complete part of their thesis research at a DOE lab.
