“Infrastructure” is one of four main themes for the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture (VCEA) 2023 – 2028 Strategic Plan.

Goal

To support the Voiland College’s employees, students, and partners with modern, state-of-the-art facilities.

Objectives

  • Align resources with strategic infrastructure priorities.
  • Increase funding resources for infrastructure.
  • Engage in integrated teaching, research, fundraising, and facilities fundraising planning.

Intended Outcomes

Voiland College’s infrastructure priorities will be successfully funded from the state of Washington, philanthropic support, federal agencies, and other funding mechanisms.

Voiland College will be positioned to identify and develop needed facilities based on evidence-based practices in pedagogy and scholarship, forecasts of future academic, industry and demographic shifts, and changes in technology.

Voiland College’s physical infrastructure will provide a superior environment for effective and efficient teaching, learning, and engagement, and serves as a space that welcomes all the members of our community.

Strategic Planning Initiatives

VCEA facilities will be adaptable to academic, research, and industry shifts while remaining environmentally and financially sustainable.

  • Energy Efficiency and Sustainability: VCEA will implement best practices in design and operations to reduce energy consumption and create eco-friendly facilities.
  • Community-Centered Design: VCEA will develop facilities that foster community, enhance occupant capability,improve occupant health and safety, and are efficiently designed for multi-use and future repurposing.
  • Modernized Program Sizes: VCEA will define program sizes by identifying key academic and research focus areas, analyzing shared infrastructure needs, and designing multi-use spaces for labs, classrooms, and services.
  • Showcase Opportunities: VCEA will highlight key focus areas and achievements to attract and retain top talent and partners.

Encourage a culture of efficient facility use through community involvement in modernization efforts.

  • Change Management Engagement: VCEA will establish processes that allow the VCEA community to participate in modernization plans, keeping them informed and excited about upcoming changes.
  • Promote Efficient Use of Facilities: VCEA will foster a culture of shared space utilization by creating incentives for efficient and collaborative use of resources.
  • Capital Planning Collaboration: VCEA will work closely with WSU leadership to ensure that our facility modernization is aligned with the broader university capital planning strategy.
  • Supported by our generous donors and industry partners VCEA is launching a pre-design for Dana Hall programming and a refresh of the VCEA precinct plan in Fall of 2026.

  • Establish Timelines & Funding Targets: VCEA will set and monitor clear financial goals and timelines for capital construction.
  • Leverage Resources & Expertise: VCEA will align talent and resources needed to meet fundraising and facility support, and identify and involve friends of the college with relevant skills to help develop capital projects.
  • Engage Champions & Stakeholders: VCEA will expand opportunities to educate faculty, staff, students, alumni, and community members to raise awareness of the need for and benefits of updated facilities, seeking support (time, talent, treasure) and advocacy of its infrastructure initiatives.
