- I find that analogies and connections to real life applications can be quite helpful.
- Offered zoom classes as well as in person
- Provide us with a lot of learning resources
- They really took time out of their schedule and took that extra step to esnure that I understood the material.
- More office hours
- Most professors have been very helpful. They have made the transition back to in person easy.
- Worked through example problems that lined up with the exam questions
- Recording and uploading lectures for future reference and review
- Some of them actually planned their lectures.
- They have done a great job in giving students opportunities to think deeply about architecture.
- They have been helpful by answering all of the questions that I have about assignments.
- Andy O’Fallon really cares about the material and makes sure his lectures completely understand what is going on. He also pushes his office hours and loves to meet his students. That is a prime example of a great professor in my opinion.
- Helped me understand logic circuits
- They were understanding when I had to miss class due to getting sick
- Recording and uploading the zoom recordings of lectures have enabled me to learn more, as I have been able to review the subject and absorb any material that may have been missed during class.
- When they provide a schedule for the whole semester so I can map it out.
- They were able to show me different aspects of my major by having a guest speaker come in.
- Give us unlimited attempts on the homework so we could really learn the concepts.
- Take time after class to explain things
- Provide the presentation slides after class so I could go back and review. That was extremely helpful for me to retain the information and reference it.
- Recording lectures, posting course schedule and all assignments ahead of time.
- Made lecture brief yet informative.
- Allowing us to turn in assignments at our own pace rather than waiting until the week/day they are due
- They were very good about relating real world examples to things that we were talking about in class.
- really went through the material and was very understanding with the material
- Study and always ask questions and get involved in student groups
- My professors have been consistent with showing up to class on time and holding lectures as expected. They have done their job effectively which allows us as students to do our job and learn.
- They made me talk to my neighbors
- Respected students who said they needed to stay home sick and promoted masking through example.
- Effective and frequent communication,
- Prof Assefaw and Broschat were very excited about what they are teaching, which in turn, made me more excited and comfortable in those classes.
- Allow for team projects and in class examples of coding instead of power points.
- Hands on learning and interactive teaching
- They have all been available and helpful with clear expectations.
- The professor created an environment that fosters learning by not expecting students to immediately understand the content.
- My professors provided real life examples of the engineering concepts we were learning about in class. I feel like often times the concepts that are learned in class can feel inapplicable to our daily lives so it is nice to be able to have that different perspective.
- They gave multiple examples that made me understand the course better. They are also patient to help when ever I have a question.
- Show me resources like the VCEA tutoring.
- Interactive lectures (they are not bland)
- Better teaching
- I have a cpts 260 professor who has a really good sense of humor and that’s helped tremendously
- Made class interactive and not boring
- Providing office hours for additional assistance has been helpful
- Professors were willing to take time to answer questions thoroughly and completely.
- My professor applied for a grant to make our labs smaller so that we could get better individual help
- Saeed Lotfifard in EE491 stayed consistent in the content that we’ve learned when testing us in our first quiz.
- I appreciated that they have clamped down on mask wearing, and have made all resources available online in case we miss class
- Talking about real world examples in class.
- Office hours where the professor can sit one on one and help me
- They are very understanding
- They offer tutoring hours
- My professor has a very fast paced lecturing style, but is always happy to answer questions, or go back over things.
- Took time to ask if we have questions
- Explain things in a way that is easy to understand.
- Set up times to study with mentors
- The assignments are very educational and teach me a lot while not feeling like a chore.
- Answer questions that students had and explain the concepts better.
- Assignment pacing was good, use of group project early on was nice.
- If the give us more homework
- It’s just been really good to be back in person. I think my professors are taking advantage of that by doing things in class where we work together and discuss things.
- Very accommodating for mental and physical health
- I am hardly to understand the professors explained the lesson.
- I don’t have any Voiland professors. My math placement didn’t align with my degree but I’m still doing it
- I received some personal feedback on my in-class work which was quite reassuring.
- My professor was very thorough about everything we went over in class and during the review session.
- Holding more office hours and on Zoom so I don’t have to freak out about walking there in time.
- They were personal and made each student feel like they mattered.
- Made me feel a lot more comfortable in class
- All the professors I have had in the program have been extremely responsive and helpful when trying to learn new material. My experience here has been much better thanks to them.
- Have seminars and class discussion on professional development
- Just being back in person and interacting.
Comments on Improvements for Professors
What things, if any, could your Voiland College professors improve upon to make your education experience better?
- Lecture presantion, clarity of speech, and staying on track
- Have professors who don’t belittle your abilities or expect you to be immediately be proficient in previous courses when you literally only had one semester to practice it
- More time for questions
- offer more resources to help learn on our own
- I think they are doing great!
- A better understand/use of the Canvas system
- Have more energy.
- Explain concepts and ideas in ways that us students understand, not in a technical way that only someone who has been doing the problems for 20+ years would be able to understand.
- Make the screen clearer
- Honestly, I have no complaints. My two Voiland professors are very passionate about what they teach and they are great people to be around.
- Maybe slow down a little bit, I have trouble keeping up, but then again we are on a time schedule.
- Some teachers don’t explain why we are learning topics, and even say that the topics are things that we may never use in real life
- Be more organized and get work back in a reasonable amount of time
- Posting lecture materials ahead of time
- Nothing would make the experience better. I myself should join and go to more Voiland events to prepare myself for my future.
- Better inform about clubs and other opportunities
- Using a website other than canvas
- Some professors need a better textbook that actually ties in to what the class is being taught so that the student feels confident enough to when the it comes to the exam that they could include the textbook as a reference as well.
- offer windows based laptops to students
- Stay approachable, it was easy online to communicate with professors without needing to go into office hours or tutoring face to face.
- they are doing good
- Make less assignments due in one week.. there’s too many sometimes
- More bread, focus more on key steps to problem-solving, share local events for students to attend.
- Some professors could try to understand more that is students are kinda struggling with going back in person and times are still tough.
- There was one engineering problem that I was insufficiently prepared for an engineering problem involving the optimazation of a triple variable equation.
- please record the lecture. I wish professors keep recording lectures for in-person classes. It’s much easier to go back and re-watch lectures because most students will not be able to grasp the materials the first time I listen to it
- less homework
- Im unsure if Chem 105 falls under the engineering college, but I would learn a lot more effectively if the professor didnt spend 20 minutes on each practice problem and instead gave us more variety in the practice problems that we do, so we have more of a chance to see a problem similar to something on a test. Also in chem 105, doing less pointless concept maps and more “pretests” and stuff like that in which we get immediate feedback on what we’re doing wrong rather than just simply “knowing what topics I don’t know” would be hugely beneficial to me and the vast majority of people I know.
- The experience is already good
- Recording every lecture for COVID scares
- Maybe explaining the assignments more
- Clearer Instructions
- Enunciate. A lot of the professors are difficult to understand.
- I can’t think of anything they can improve on at the moment, but I think generally professors could cut us some slack because of the state of our society and what people have gone through in the past year.
- If you are going to allow zoom recorded classes please make them actually viewable on zoom instead of not.
- More dynamic ways of teaching/more practical examples
- Post the notes on time
- ive had nothing but good experiences
- So far they are great!
- Be a little bit more organized when taking a test. Have the tests ready before class.
- Have a more laid out plan for homework and assignments so we can plan ahead.
- All files we work on are online and easy to reach
- More explanation for assignments
- Record the lecture and wear a microphone to make it easier to hear.
- being more organized
- be a little more lenient and understanding especially with everything that is going on around them
- Less theory and more example problems
- Be more clear with what they are teaching. Explain more.
- Not talk about personal ideologies
- Study guides or a list of more practice problems to do
- Some professors have no covid plans in their courses this year. They do not care if you can’t come to school due to a covid scare. They would rather I came to class instead of staying home.
- Multiple professional photo events to account for people who had class during the other
- being more understanding
- Allow us to be given enough time to complete assignments.
- For materials engineering, my instructor could learn how to teach and most definitely slow down on important subjects. Also consider the effort that students are putting in to their classes. working out more practice problems for subjects that are less intuitive would be very helpful.
- Talking about how to get involved
- making class time more intuitive not just practice/working on projects
- Create more in class participation
- Better classrooms
- talk about applications of the content being learned
- This responsibility falls on both the student and the professor, but trying to build a relationship with students. This is hard because its college and there are hundreds of students that the professor see every semester, but finding some time during the week to interact that isn’t full of school.
- Can’t think of anything.
- Slow down the work load. It has been stressful with the amount of work they are giving us.
- Having group assignments worth less points in the grade book. Other then that I love the classes
- I don’t know for now
- My professor could explain things in better detail.
- Work with other professors on classes and lab scheduling that can work with other students when they try to schedule classes for the upcoming semester.
- Cover material that will appear on exams
- I had to drop CS 360 because I could not dedicate extra time outside class to attend mini-lectures every week during office hours
- Make lab reports less work
- Tutoring hours
- making presentations easier to see (larger font)
- Definitely engaging more actively with individual students who are struggling.
- Copies of notes put online if possible
- Asking to explain about anything I want to
- Professors could be more enthusiastic when teaching in class and be more engaging or interactive for students.
- Offer video links to watch for the more challenging material
- An available computer lab and better maintained classrooms
- Everyone has been approachable and helpful thus far
- if students struggle with certain problems go over them in class
- Don’t put zeros in the grade book when it’s not graded
- If anything more update emails to just make sure I don’t forget anything
- Enforce the mask mandate so that i feel safe going to class
- I hope that the fantastic experience that I have had extends to those who aren’t at the top of the class too.
- I’d say give a bit more time to write down all of the notes in class would be helpful.
- Familiarization with technology and pre writing class notes so they are neater
- Better organization of the canvas page. Maybe have a training or something because some teachers have the syllabus in “files” and the class documents under the syllabus tab. It makes finding stuff for different classes challenging because the documents are all in different parts of canvas.
- teach the material that they test
- Nothing, their teaching style works great for me!
- The instructor have to understand that students can not understand the course material by themselves with only basic explanation that does not cover and does not equal the difficulty of his homework assignments and exams. Realizing that the students don’t have resources except the book that is also considered simple compared to the homeworks and exams might let him explain better and cover all important details in class.
- Making it more accessible online so if students do need to stay home (due to being sick) they don’t have to worry about falling behind
- Offer more times for questioning during class
- Classes should start out slow rather than hit the ground running.
- Maybe provide more examples of their expectations
- Flexible deadline
- Communicate.
- Record lectures or post lecture notes so that I can go back and refer to them if needed.
- Make it easier to reach out. Maybe do some more events including faculty.
- Since my courses are taught through ZOOM, I’d prefer if my professors have better microphones so that their voices can be a little more clearer.
- not put as much pressure on new things we’re learning since we have been away for a few semesters
- access to recorded lectures
- the ability to leave lab early when all the work is done
- Less group projects and hand-holding and maybe more actually letting us show off what we can do. Also, I know this is a big ask from an engineering class, but maybe actually teaching some engineering?
- More office hours
- Making more connections with the students in class.
- My professors could be a little bit more understanding that some areas of study are new to students, and we won’t know how to do it right away.
- I can’t have any input on this as I haven’t had any engineering classes yet.
- Communicating homework better and all in one place (i.e. having the hw always posted on canvas, not through things like MyMathLab)
- Everything has been going great as far as lectures and assignments.
- Understanding that we have other classes besides theirs.
- Go over more examples in class
- I think having all professors record their lectures would be incredibly helpful and ease the transition from being completely on zoom to in person. Especially since in a lot of the other degree programs on campus are still recording their lectures.
- get a better room, Abelson 201 is a really uncomfortable seating and atmosphere. It’s too short aswell
- More work directly relating to engineering instead of submitting lecture notes, which serve no purpose besides showing that the student looked at a rubric and spent time completing busywork. Seriously, they don’t even want actual notes taken during lecture, just a typed-out page of answers directly from the rubric. This does not encourage taking notes, but encourages searching for answers in other, sometimes unrelated, course materials instead. Also, as a college student, I do not need a whole week of class dedicated to how to write an email, and another dedicated to how to write a resume. The resume is understandable to to internship/job applications, but email tutorials (busywork) are by no means necessary.
- Not sure. There is a lot of course material to cover but they do a good job.
- More student-to-class involvement. (Questions to class)
- I love these guests lectures that come in to describe what that do
- Helping / encouraging students to make study groups. My physics study group is very helpful, but we came up with the idea and organized it entirely by ourselves
- Give us more problems as an example
- More in-depth with how to get materials for at-home projects
- Less rushed information
- Encourage teachers to present their notes in a format they write, rather than breeze through a Powerpoint.
- Less out of class assignments.
- I guess people learn in different ways, but personally, I learn better when an instructor writes on the board, solving the problem while explaining it. This way, I always have my notes to go back to when I get stuck. As opposed to when they only go through slides is like reading a book, which is more difficult for me to follow.
- slow down the lecture a little bit so people can take notes
- I would suggest trying more hands on activity to really experience these professions.
- I like group work, so that’s good.
- Teach better and explain more thoroughly
- have everything posted on canvas
- Better connection of lecture material to homework.
- One professor could slow down in class and not go back and fourth so much between lecturing. It makes things confusing
- They seem to be doing everything they can.
- because I am in my first year, it doesn’t seem as personable, but i believe as the years go on it will be more personalized.
- They could teach classes offline, so I don’t lose two to three hours weekly waiting for the spark rooms to operate
- So far the experience has been good. I do not have any recommendations as of right now as I am still adapting to how college works.
- Some of the material is covered too quickly.
- So far so good,,, I would say that the burden is mostly on myself to use the resources the professors have provided
- Give more examples on how we can apply the information to problems or assignments that they give us. A lot of the homework doesn’t match the lectures. A lot of courses also expect me to teach myself important topics that are valuable to the course and I’m not studying to be a teacher. A lot of the information can be confusing because of this.
- So far, they are doing it just right.
- I’ve had a couple classes where the lectures have not translated into my notes and brain as much as I would have liked.
- Their notes could be a bit more structured to follow.
- Being more on top of giving homework and deadlines.
- make remote learning not as much of a hinderance, if I am sick I still feel obligated to come to school due to attendance needs
- Other than ensuring students understand the material, not much. Since a general aspect to learning is either hands on experience or the amount of work you put in at home to learn the material to your upmost ability.
- I have lecture on Monday, and lab on Tuesday. After every lecture, there is a journal entry that is due at 5 PM on lab days. Both of those days I have a really tight schedule and it would be much nicer if that journal entry was due at the end of the week rather than the following day at 5 PM, which gives me only Monday evening to do that assignment, realistically. Also it would be nice to have a more obvious, concrete schedule for upcoming projects, and to not layer the projects on top of each other, I feel like I have three going on all at the same time, with the bridge, the paper tower, and the grand challenge project all going on at the same time it feels hectic and difficult to manage.
- Clarification
- Do not rush through course materials, more clearly explain material without expecting students to immediately understand it, and be more reasonable with homework due dates in reference to how recent the connected course material is.
- Nothing in particular, every class appears to have set us up for success.
- ME313 lecture not very clear for many students, lab and exam loosly connect to lecture. Would like the professor to do example problems before throwing the students into exams based off poorly explained conceptual teachings
- I can’t think of much
- offer windows operating laptops!
- Provide small excercises/quizes to make clear what the expectations are.
- Just provide more examples or just make sure to focus on process
- I think the hardest part of myclasses so far has just been onboarding. To give an example, in my objecct oriented programming principles class, the teacher had us setup git lab to turn in assignments, but didnt explain what that software does beyond “Version control”. The use of this software is self evident to anyone who is used to the industry. But is absolutley not self evident to someone who has never heard of it before. The teacher failed to explain why its important, how it works, what is required to use it, etc.
- Post notes and assignment information/ drop boxes earlier
- Besides move onto the next topic, nothing that i can think of
- I’ve noticed that the professors that are more engaged in the work through of example problems have more students understanding the concepts.
- Take attendance, get people to come to class.
- Some of my professors have made uncomfortable jokes in class
- Can’t think of anything!
- Allow students to talk and study together. Even study groups are considered cheating to these professors.
- Be more understanding about attendance if you’re sick.
- Communication
- Some courses are a bit harder. We just came back from online. Some professors don’t take that into account…
- Take more time to go over material
- Put all the assignments that are due on the assignments tab on canvas
- I can’t think of anything
- More flexibility. A lot of professors seem to act as if COVID never happened and there is little flexibility if you are sick or waiting on a test. I also have been without grades in ME 401 and it is week 5. There is also very little preparation or structure to said class and it is the main class that I see very little flexibility.
- The overlapping course work makes the workload almost unmanageable, I was expecting to work, but I’m barely making deadlines
- More in depth on conceptual topics
- Do clear lecture notes
- Professors can engage with the class better by asking questions more frequently and prompting students to answer them.
- Recordings of all lectures would be convenient for those who have to stay at home due to sickness or other inconveniences.
- I would appreciate a more thorough use of canvas for due dates and things, not having much posted on canvas pages is really frustrating.
- Have a complete list of materials that will be used in the class listed in the syllabus, so students can prepare a head of time and purchase all needed materials for the course in advance.
- Have online options available for students that don’t feel comfortable in person
- Probably explaining the material more in depth and ensuring that students understand; as well as supporting students who have to stay home due to illness/roommates being sick
- Sometimes the language barrier is difficult for me to understand professors
- Inform us of ongoing COVID-19 discussions among faculty.
- Provide outside resources to help study. Ex. Online videos teaching similar content
- More selective TA hiring
- Better comprehension towards everyone’s needs instead of an overall assumption
- Record lectures
- My engineering 120 lab teacher could be more accepting of new ideas instead of judging them and shutting them down
- Being more flexible with some deadlines
- I can’t think of any improvements off the top of my head.
- Don’t just Read off slides
- More detailed syllabus
- Start teaching new content. We are still doing review for CPTS 223…
- Maybe being a little bit more clear about course progression? I’m only vaguely aware of what classes I actually need.
- All of what I just said (sending out polls making sure we’re okay and what they can do for us if not, leaving genuinely kind comments on graded HW)
- Posting grades in a comprehensive format.
- Have outside of class study sessions or groups
- can’t think of anything right now
- Maybe more visuals?
- Less work, too time consuming
- Although its unrealistic because it is a short semester with so much material to cover, it would be nice to take more time learning material.
- I think that if a lot of students are struggling with a question on the homework (and the professor is aware of that), they should send an announcement through email or canvas with some tips on how to complete the homework.
- There is currently limited tutoring opportunities for the material science program. I couldn’t go to a designated tutoring center to get help on homework if i needed it.
- More hands on demonstrations
- Explain how the process of solving problems more instead of broad strokes “how things work in general for this concept”.
- Maybe recording the lectures so we can go back and listen to them or see them if we miss them
- Speak louder occasionally
- My SDC 120 professor forgot to send out the materials list for his class. This made it very difficult to squire the materials and learn for the 1st few weeks of school.
- I would like out-of-class structured study, led by the professor or TA. I think it would be helpful for CS majors.
- I hope that it will be recorded
- They could more expediently make the IT department at Pullman feel the weight of their shortcomings.
- Recorded the lectures and have them online in case someone sick and to be able to go back and watch them
- Enunciation
- Lectures are a little bit dry
- Don’t have one due date on canvas and then have different ones for each lab section. If Canvas says due Friday at 11:59 don’t have it due the prior Tuesday before class.
- I’ve been a bit dissapointed with both CSTM201 and ARCh 351. Both seem to be somewhat disorganized in delivery, lack any kind of background reading, and seem to have a pretty low expecation for student effort. They are important classes that should be more rigorous.
- tone down the homework by making assignments shorter and less frequent, and substitute exams for short practical projects
- ease us in just a little more
- more TAs
- More online exam plz
- I would say be clearer in lectures. This doesn’t apply to everyone but one of my class I struggle to u understand him.
- A professor I have just reads PowerPoint slides in class and is not engaging at all.
- Keep course documents (syllabi, lab procedures, etc.) up to date
- Some of them do not post lectures and it would be very helpful to have those as reference, for if I did not understand something in class.
- I can’t think of anything at the moment.
- Less homework
- Offer additional office hours would be greatly appreciated
- Give clear study guides and be sure to balance online tests to give us enough time to complete them.
- My arch 201 teacher can structure her class better in that canvas is helpful for communication, assignment posting and submission. We as students dont need to have one drive to submit and attain assignments and slack to communicate with classmates. It makes no sense to have zoom open in in person class (i understand she wants to make students interact with eachother but no one interacts anyways when we are in our computers)
- Continue providing clear expectations
- Slow down on explanations.
- Remind themselves/learn how the classroom equipment, projector, screens, lights ect, work.
- Define all variables in equations that are given during lecture.
- I wish there was an online copy of notes or recorded lectures, I really enjoyed being able to rewatch lectures and have the professors notes so easily accessible when I got stuck on homework or for study review.
- Use canvas better
- A better understanding of when tutors are available.
- No complaints as of yet
- not going over their block period
- More understanding of all the work we have on our plates
- If our professors were allowed to let us join class via Zoom. It is really difficult to concentrate on learning when the person sitting next to you is not wearing their mask over their nose and breathing on you, and you can hear people coughing who are clearly sick. I think that forcing us to sit in tight lecture halls with poor ventilation does not make sense when the class is being streamed/recorded anyways. We should have the choice whether we want to come to class and expose ourselves to covid or not. Many students prefer online classes, and especially for my classes, there is no real need or benefit to being in person for them.
- They are doing a very good job
- More resources online for help with homework
- Lectures sometimes feel like a waste of time. This occurs when explanations in class arent thorough enough or are not organized and confusing
- If the professors had better microphones and cameras in class, remote learning would be better.
- Reduce whats due
- Some of the professors talk very quickly its really hard to follow along sometimes.
- Going back to remote learning for our safety and well being. There’s never any slack cut for engineering students and during this time it’s much needed. Even if students are sick they are forced to come to class during this time. It would be better for students to have options to go fully remote like the previous year. At least until COVID-19 is brought under control.
- Record more lectures would help because when I was sick, all but one of my professors had recorded their lecture so I got way behind in the other classes and missed important information.
- More office hours
- Not just use PowerPoint.
- More tutoring hours
- Sometimes lectures are not very engaging. Also, some course material is not very useful.
- Posting homework assignments earlier
- Work with students who are unable to attend class due to covid.
- Less quizzes
- I guess having more office hours
- The transition between online and in class was sharp turn to reality it must be hybrid
- More office hours
- Some professors could clarify what the attendance policy is, since Covid has changed things and there are some mixed messages with attending class if you are sick.
- Provide examples of how we are expected to do certain assignments
- Nothing comes to mind
- Plan their lectures and be able/available to answer questions.
- They could immerse us in more field trips that relate to architecture and help us understand and experience the architecture scope of work
- They could improve on explaining better of how to do some of the problems during lecture. Some problems can get complicated, so it’s nice if professors can explain how to solve them.
- So far I haven’t noticed anything that could use improvement.
- Less tests
- If every lecture could be recorded still, that would be great
- Some of the professors are understandably unorganized. Although I understand it is difficult to be in transition between an online and in-person learning environment, this disorganization I feel has impacted my ability to learn and has sometimes only suceeded in confusing me more in the subject.
- Better use of communication during the weeks
- They are doing a great job, he doesn’t need to change anything.
- Give more example problems rather than just briefly going over mathematic concepts.
- Slow down with material during class to explain concepts
- If they were more strict about students wearing masks and not coming when sick, I would feel safer coming to class. A lot of students don’t wear their masks properly or at all and a lot of people come to class very sick.
- Actually know the material, have more convenient office hours, post course schedule and assignments further ahead of time, give understandable lectures
- Nothing comes to mind at the moment.
- Upload the notes they take during class to Canvas
- They could be better at helping us practice concepts before expecting us to apply them on homeworks and such.
- Nothing theyre awesome
- The overall experience could be better if professors had more guidance upon the current health situation. If a student is sick, there are not many options to make up work. The best option is getting notes from a friend. Students should not feel pressure to go to class when sick but if there isn’t a good way to receive the information missed, it is very difficult to skip class. Missing 2 full weeks of instruction does not help any student be successful, especially in engineering classes. Further, there are not policies in place to making up labs. In many lab classes, if you miss one week you automatically fail. There needs to be a safeguard for students in place if they get sick.
- It would be nice if they learned something from last year. Recorded lectures and digital notes revolutionized my learning experience. Not having these resource is an active detriment especially when student are sick and need to stay home per university policies.
- Enunciate
- Providing an estimated schedule for assignments and making assignment details more clear and organized.
- Use more in class coding examples that allow us to see how things are done from a more experienced point of view rather than use slideshows to explain everything.
- Put all assignments that are due on canvas.
- I can’t think of anything.
- They can better their lecture notes/ slides to understand the topic
- Having more resources to help students in computer science like having more tutors to help more students.
- Communication
- I have some professors that just read of slides which has made class really monotonous
- Go into less detail on projects so they don’t over explain
- Learn to teach the lessons so students don’t have to teach themselves.
- I personally would like to see more example problems done during lecture
- Speaking louder or making use of classroom sound systems.
- Provide more examples, write down any important information during their explanations, and stay consistent when giving exams or quizzes
- Some classes have run over time, but only by 5min max
- Be more organized one of my professors doesn’t even use canvas.
- Not give out so much homework. I’m slammed by every class and I work a part time job so it’s pretty stressfull
- Possibly post notes before class
- Having compassion
- More fleshing out of concepts in class
- Work on using canvas better.
- I feel print out certain handouts for our reference.
- Prepare better for class, especially with regard to technology. Many lectures have been interrupted because the professor couldn’t figure out the projectors.
- More homework
- Nothing comes to mind right now
- The Professors went through the lecture so fast. If could, please slow down the explanation a little more. It will help us have time to follow the lecture
- Provide power points in lectures
- Providing more detailed feedback and ways to improve
- I would like to see professors do a weekly review of the biggest takeaways from class at the end or beginning of each week.
- they have been understanding and accomodating.
- Help relate what we are currently learning to our final career aspirations.
- Nothing specific just good people
- Give less homework
- Get grades back before the next assignment
Comments on Positive College actions
What, if anything, has Voiland College done well in the past few weeks that has made your experience at Washington State University better?
- I’ve found workshops to be very helpful in my professional development
- Allow us to pursue our own ideas in the field
- Machine training.

Do you have any other concerns, questions, or challenges regarding your Voiland College classes and student services?
- I am interested in getting a mentor to get an academic plan going.
- This semester for me personally wouldn’t be as hard if it were not the things happening at home. I am too focused on the stressors at home that I am not able to really focus on my studies. I would have dropped this semester if it weren’t for the fact that the classes I am taking now aren’t offered in the spring. And this would jack up my graduation date. I am hoping that from this point on I can turn it around.
- I am satisfied with my stay at WSU. GO COUGS!
- My materials engineering fundamentals class is very quick paced and I don’t believe any of my class mates, including me, can keep up with the pace. I’m having to learn a lot of the material on my own which is very time consuming. Other than that, the rest of my classes are very good and well structured.
- Is there a chance where we go back to online with the increase of Covid cases
- were to find scholarship opportunities for freshman!
- My only concerns are the inability to help certain students. I have struggled with certain assignments and my professor assumes my TA will help and the other way around. An active engaged professor that will help and not talk at students would definitely help!
- What I like about WSU is it is global because mom doesn’t have enough time to come to school every day. Especially I’m a person that loves studying.
- It would be good to have a TA for Marti Cown that can help her with using technology
- I think the college has been doing a very good job adjusting back to in person again and providing helpful resources. The only thing that would make things better is being able to go maskless but that’s obviously out of our control.
- Nope! I’m having a great time, and I’m really happy to be here.
- Many of the students in my classes have been coughing incessantly throughout lecture. Is there a point at which they can be asked to leave class?
- I currently do not have anything to bring up.
- Unified platform for club announcments/meeting times? it can be really difficult to find where to go if not already in the clubs
- Why would you make a final paper a group project? Explain to me how forcing students to muck up and muddle their ideas with other peoples ideas and forcing a compromise on every single decision could possibly be useful in an engineering setting. You’re forcing students to choose projects they aren’t as invested in because each member has to be a little bit interested in it. You’re forcing some students to pull along other students for equal grades as the kids being pulled. You’re forcing people who actually might have better ideas or a cohesive project to settle for worse ideas and less cohesive, hodge-podge projects. It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen. I’m not even convinced my prof knows anything about engineering at this point, considering we’ve talked about exactly zero engineering thus far. Fix your shit I’m paying money for this class.
- I would like to receive advising for a grad plan.
- I am concerned at the apathy this college has for their STEM students’ mental and emotional well-being.
- I think the only other prominent thing in all of my classes is the lack of enforcement of the mask mandate. It is a consistent thing in the Voiland College that needs to be addressed more, many students are not wearing masks in class or do not have them on properly, especially since the Frat Flu is going around, most people don’t know if it’s that or COVID when those people without masks start coughing.
- I’m a bit worried about how quickly CS 121 is moving, but I’ll get the momentum going soon.
- I have no further questions, comments or concerns. I feel that I addressed them proficiently in the preceding answer boxes.
- Will there be another shutdown and force us to go back to zoom classes? Because I personally didn’t like it one bit and would not want to go through that again.
- As a freshman how would I go about getting connected to the architecture classes early?
- I transferred from community college expecting better teachers and a better experience and yet I’m stuck with more people reading their notes straight off a powerpoint or not communicating clearly (despite asking us to)
- There is one kid in a lot of my classes who almost never wears a mask.
A couple a of weeks ago a lot of students were sick at school. That seems to be getting better though - If possible, I would like the department to reconsider using the spark for A/V classes until the system works semi-reliably. I’ve had 1.5 hour long classes with only 20 minutes of lecture due to zoom malfunctions. I stopped finding it funny about three weeks ago. It is beyond frustrating that these issues have persisted for nearly a month.
- I look forward to being apart of the Voiland experience!
- My biggest issue I’ve come across so far is that my fluid mechanics class was a surprise online class even though there was no indication of that when I signed up for it. I would have been more annoyed by that but the professor seems like a great teacher and I’ve enjoyed the class a lot.
- no other concerns outside of covid
- windows operating laptops should be available to students
- I understand the need to work with cohorts in certain assignments, but in many of my past experiences there are a good number of individuals that either fail to contribute or contribute in a timely manner. This ends up leading to a few members in the group taking the burden of the non-contributing cohorts.
- I sometimes wish the study center, that many chemical engineering students turn to, was bigger. I notice some students turn away and leave because the room seems too packed or loud over other teams/students using the room. I hope there can be an expansion in some way because I do get a lot of help when I’m there.
- Not really. Ya’ll are doing your best with the situation as are the students. It’ll take a while to get back to normal.
- Not necessarily regarding Voiland College, but I would love for the Covid situation to finally subside.
- I wish there was more online support other than “reading the notes” because that is very clearly not as thorough as lecture. However, I think it is reasonable to take more precaution than before when not feeling well yet most people feel they cannot miss lecture/lab without 10x the amount of work. I also would like to see the mask mandate be taken more seriously, as I see many people in my classes without masks or wearing them improperly. I do not feel comfortable in class yet I cannot miss class without relatively extreme consequences. Voiland College does not seem to be taking a pandemic seriously, which is a shame since it did severely impact the nation for the last year and a half. I also feel that coming back from over a year of online classes should have more of a transition than “this was my policy in person before, so I will not be making adjustments”. There is still very little being heard from VCEA admin in terms of what to do if we are having major concerns about a class/faculty/etc. Overall, very disappointed
- I want to apply to be a tutor. What should I do?
- I think boil and should try to help enforce a stronger mask mandate
- Fear of contracting COVID has prevented me from being on campus and I’m totally lost/behind on my senior design project.
- Student are not following covid safety guidelines. Some students sit in crowded classes with no mask or wearing a mask over just their mouth. I have never seen a professor do anything about this. Since we are back to fully in-person classes, a diligent student does not feel like they can stay at home. Professors say, “if you feel sick, stay at home. We’ll figure something out.” That’s not very reassuring. The school needs to back that student up, protect their education and their grade.”
- As mentioned previously, there is not tutoring available for the material science program due to it’s small size.
- I do not really want to work in groups right now. It seems like every class I am in, I can hear multiple students coughing their lungs up. I do not want to work shoulder to shoulder with these people. About half of the student body wears a mask below their nose, and while my family is hundreds of miles away, I care about my professors and fellow students and do not want to be spreading stuff around.
- Satellite campus student here. Get
Pullman IT the new resources, pay, or staff that is needed to fix the classroom-inclusive zoom calls. It is currently a mess that is worthy of one descriptive word: shameful. - Why does WSU still show classes in the course catalog that haven’t been taught in years and they have no intention of teaching them in the foreseeable future?
- ARCH 351 and CSTM 201 are both somewhat disorganized and don’t have a very high level of rigor. Both should probably have background reading, then the class will be able to move quicker and cover things in more depth.
- To give back to the hardworking VECA students, VECA should have a weekly breakfast where donuts and coffee are served. Also, I feel VECA could put more effort into reducing the workload on the students. Instructors often assign unnecessarily long assignments that cause a large amount of stress and anxiety on the students, which causes them to preform poorly. The same can be said about exams that are often far too long to completed in a normal class period.
- Get more TAs and helpers for coding
- We could provide mask and hand somizer in all WSU building, especially in dining hall, dining hall is a good place for careless students who do not carry extra mask lost their mask
- No, keep up the good work
- How long does it take to change a degree program or how much does it take? I am concerned about my degree program.
- The classrooms are really hot right now with everyone needing to wear facemask it can be hard to focus when everyone is sweating up a storm. Especially in Sloan 169, that room is an oven.
- some TAs have heavy accents where it’s hard to understand especially if the class is a math class
- Please allow us to join class online if we want to. I really do not want to get sick, and it would help me focus. Also, if someone could please send a reminder that student must wear masks over their mouths AND noses, I would appreciate it. There are multiple people in my classes that don’t wear them over their noses, and one individual that basically wears his on his chin, which defeats the purpose of wearing the mask and creates a public health problem.
- I’d want the ability to go fully remote to keep my family safe. Not only that, this pandemic has shattered my finances and I went into debt. Transportation costs have been too expensive and I’m struggling to stay afloat. Overall it has been very difficult for me and my family during this time. I’d like to seek help from Voiland College as I have many concerns about in person learning at this time due to the pandemic
- Does the college offer anything to help with financial planning? I’m working and saving money but could use help planning it out.
- I am just worried that the work load with my classes will become too much but I’m not sure what Voiland College could change specifically to address this problem. I just need to be prepared.
- When can students register for spring 2022? And, is it pretty competitive? (Meaning, do I need to register as soon as the time opens to get the classes I want?)
- Given the troubling times we are in, I think yall are doing the best you can with the resources you have

Suggestions
Do you have any suggestions on how Voiland College can better serve you this semester?
- Do you have any suggestions on how Voiland College can better serve you this semester?
- Watch your new hires as the teach and the concerns from the students. I have one professor that really demoralizes me
- Keep doing the same thing. I read most of the emails from Voiland college and I have found several helpful resources
- Maybe not send so many emails, group them together or something, its kind of frustrating, especially when studying for exams, finals, etc, to get a load of emails in the span of an hour or 2
- Keep posting on social media because it is the easiest for students to stay on top of events and information.
- I have no suggestions they are doing great.
- Don’t send as many emails that aren’t vitally important
- I was hoping more options to get to meet companies would be available.
- Require professors to use canvas and not their own website
- offer math tutoring
- Continue holding interactive webinar events.
- Have more socializing events for junior and sophomore students.

- I wish there were more events during the morning hours. I work full-time in the evenings and I miss out on a lot of events and clubs because of it.
- Include scholarship oppertunities in weekly emails or have advisors send them out. I don’t know if you guys already do that, but I haven’t seen any yet.
- Y’all are doing great
- Provide multiple instructors for classes that have only one instructor.
- Making Sloan more breathable and more welcoming for students as well as adding more study locations around the building
- I would like to receive more information regarding internship opportunities.
- more detailed newsletters and emails
- Teach engineering in the engineering 120 class, also let us actually prove what we know by ourselves, not everything needs to be a hand-holdy group project
- More scholarships.
- I feel more confident in my college if there were a more individual level of communication.
- Safety precautions.
- I’m not experienced enough to know what I need yet.
- Difficult to answer, perhaps more posted advertisements in areas around campus, from classrooms, to bulletin boards, to street posts, to inside dorm halls such as Stephenson where it appears to be more STEM-oriented. I as a student am more likely to get involved if I see advertisements posted around campus. I can take pictures of posted papers, and am more likely to remember that there are such events, especially if the posted flyers stand out.
- Love to get contacted more
- weekend events for those who can’t make things on weekdays
- Give me more information on job or internship opportunities
- I think it is doing well in terms of serving students.
- An event calendar is Sloan would be awesome
- Fix the classes we need to take for our degree’s, I find engineering 120 irrelevant for my degree
- I appreciate the networking opportunities from local companies.
- Just keep doing what theyre doing!
- I wish I could opt out of some of the random emails I get. For instance, I am power track in EE, what on earth do I gain from going to a cyber security lecture meant for senior computer scientists? If I could tailor the emails I get it would make me more inclined to actually read anything the college sends me instead of automatically ignoring 90% of the emails.
- I honestly don’t know, just sometimes all the information can get overwhelming when there’s so many faucets of communication
- Not particularly, as a first semester transfer student I’m still getting my bearings at WSU.
- Voiland’s email needs to be more noticeable/stand out when sending out an email
- Provide more options for distanced learning and/or more information on distanced learning and how to access this method.
- In general the VCEA is doing fairly well, especially through communicating via email.
- No
- Provide information that pertain to my field of study. Networking opportunities.
- Provide more information on informational events (workshops, seminars, etc)
- Providing some ways to get more immersed in the current happenings of the engineering world would be appreciated
- I really appreciate the study room we have and amongst the tutors I’ve interacted with they have been extremely helpful.
- Keep class in person
- Stop sending spam emails
- Get a coffee kiosk in Sloan. We are engineers and the closest coffee is the Spark. Please install some sort of coffee kiosk. The money could go toward equipment or something. Please. Please. Please get a coffee stand.
- It might be hard sometimes to follow what’s happening in Voiland and also follow school work. Perhaps have more of general (non-mandatory) lectures about opportunities at the college.
- Take COVID seriously. Stop pretending as if it didn’t exist?
- Our college should have more labs.
- Voiland College can possibly better accommodate for student’s prerequisite knowledge and classes when transferring credit.
- I would love more information about job fairs!
- Maybe send more emails regarding possible work studies
- I would like to see announcements for more major events across campus, related to the VCEA
- More tutoring opportunities
- More digestible and quick to read email formats
- Have SDC professors tell us to follow Voiland College social media accounts,
- Many of the events are when I have class, scheduling might be something to look at. But I have no suggestions as to when is the best time/day.
- Fund in-person tutoring/writing center for satellite campuses.
- Sometimes it’s hard to know what events are on the Vancouver campus without doing some digging
- better deconfliction of events and classes – so far, multiple SDC events have conflicted with classes. I think doing this survery now and not waiting till the end of the semester is a really good practice.
- Weekly breakfast where donuts and coffee are served, help alleviate workload by reducing homework and exam frequency and length.
- Get more coding workers/helpers and TAs for classes
- Certain events haven’t reached me untill the day offer or during when this event is happening. Maybe for emphasis on social media, as to post on a story while also regularly posting could help.
- No, doing great
- An interactive calendar of what is happening, with color coding, would be a great idea.
- If possible, it would be nice if the college could send out emails about major-specific scholarship opportunites.
- Information on more presentations and lectures?
- Get lecture recording up and running
- more frequent emails regarding social events and ect
- Please let us join our classes online to avoid contracting covid-19.
- More Internships in the Pullman area, more remote internship options
- A lot of students are interested in Research oppurtunities and how to get experience in their filed through internships or volunteering. This information has been hard to find an if more easily accessible would be helpful.
- Professors could start recording their lectures.
- Mental health counseling within the college as engineering is a very demanding major.
- Just send out more detailed emails regarding what I’d like to see.
- Go hybrid
- Have more architecture-related field trips or lecture series.
- One suggestion is to have TA’s be in classroom lectures too, so that more students can get help and ask questions.
- More events regarding my field, Data Analysis, as it is often difficult to find relavant events since my field doesn’t seem to fit in anywhere.
- VCEA could work with all faculty members to ensure there is a process for if students get sick. There needs to be a standard protocol. Are students supposed to take exams in large lecture halls if they are sick? Are professors supposed to allow for makeup exams?
- It’s cosmetic, but make your emails look nicer… I have a hard time paying attention and reading them b.c the font is difficult to read and it looks like spam from the top.
- Maybe more workshops that help with finding an internship or job. I know it is a topic that intimidates a lot of students.
- I think that creating more study spaces that aren’t nessisarily tutoring exclusive would be great
- More tutoring options for senior level classes if possible
- Take the feedback from students and work towards fixing those issues
- Do not move classes fully online
- Offer one on one tutoring
- More emails!
