Research co-authored by Susmita Bose and Amit Bandyopadhyay revealed that a surgical implant developed by Washington State University researchers was able to kill 87% of the bacteria that cause staph infections in laboratory tests, while remaining strong and compatible with surrounding tissue like current implants. KGW TV reported on their work.

A WSU research team led by Hongtao Dang received a $500,000 U.S. Department of Commerce grant to train civil engineering students in emerging technologies as well as in social intelligence to better meet industry needs in Washington.

Mehdi Hosseinzadeh received an Outstanding Paper Award at the 2023 IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS’23) in Taipei.

Khalil Cherif, Ben McCornack, Zhiyu Qi, and Charlotte Wertz are among the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and Washington State University Distinguished Graduate Research Program’s seventh cohort of students.

Employee Excellence Award – Nominations Due Dec. 6

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023–24 President’s Employee Excellence Awards. The award is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions by WSU administrative professionals and classified employees. Award recipients each receive $2,500 and will be recognized at the annual Showcase event to be held in the spring of 2024.

Dec. 5 Gateway Project to Host Student Design Reception

Students from the School of Design and Construction will present their concepts for redesigning the Gateway District, an area between the WSU Pullman campus and downtown Pullman, during a reception at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 5, in the Elson S. Floyd Cultural Center on the WSU Pullman campus.

Dec. 6: Clearwater River Trail Designs Presentation

Landscape architecture students taught by Marcus Owens are developing plans for accessible trails along the Clearwater River waterfront for the community of Kamiah, Idaho. They will present their final designs from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on December 6 in the Elson Floyd Cultural Center.

Undergraduate Research Awards – Apply by Jan. 26

2024 Environmental Fellows Program – Apply by Jan.15

The Environmental Fellows Program at the Yale School of the Environment is a nationally competitive summer fellowship program for master’s and doctoral students that seeks to place students traditionally underrepresented in the environmental field and those committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in summer fellowships with environmental foundations and their grantees.

JCATI Request for Proposals – Apply by March 15

The Joint Center for Aerospace Technology Innovation (JCATI) announces our 2024-25 Request for Proposals.

JCATI funds WA aerospace industry access to WA public university engineering expertise. Industry pairs with a faculty having the appropriate expertise to address company TRL 4-7 technology roadblocks. The industry partner provides the technology pain point and in-kind goods or services. The academic partner submits the application and receives JCATI funds to support engineering students working on the project. The project benefit and impact must occur within WA.
