Antonio Carraro Named Interim CEE Chair

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Antonio Carraro has been named interim chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, taking over for Xianming Shi, who has accepted a position at the University of Miami (Florida).

Antonio will begin his role in this position starting August 1, 2024.

Per the WSU Faculty Manual, I conducted a poll among eligible department members to determine their preference for an internal or external chair. Based on their feedback and my recommendation, WSU Provost Riley-Tilmann approved appointing an interim chair while we conduct an external search for a permanent one.

As many of you know, Antonio is a Tenured Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering (Tenure-Track Academic Faculty), having joined us just a few months ago in January of 2024. He brings a wealth of world-class experience to this role, including his previous appointments as a Senior Lecturer at Imperial College London, and as an Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia and at Colorado State University. He also currently serves as the Director of WSU’s Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory.

Antonio holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Purdue University, and both M.S. and B.S. degrees in Engenharia Civil from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul.

Please join me in welcoming Antonio to his new role!

Best regards,
