Announcing the
Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture
Honoring the lifetime contributions of Gene and Linda Voiland to the college, the university, and society, Washington State University’s Board of Regents renamed the college the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture.
The Voiland College is a growing and dynamic community dedicated to creating ways to improve lives. In our teaching and research we inspire students to reach their full potential through rigorous, engaged learning and transformative hands-on experiences. Our students graduate prepared to meet the needs of industry and to tackle critical global challenges.
A Growing College
Increased understanding by state and national industry and policy leaders of the direct economic impacts of our research and education has meant dramatic growth for the college. Washington state’s commitment to our programs has led to unprecedented enrollment growth and an increased presence in the Northwest. We are building the new PACCAR Environmental Technology Building, a state-of-the-art research and learning facility. The Voiland College fulfills its mission across the state in Pullman, the Tri-Cities, Vancouver, Everett, and Bremerton, as well as through top-ranked online learning programs.
A Culture of Innovation and Collaboration
A unique community that includes all design and engineering disciplines, the Voiland College fosters a diverse culture of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. We maintain worldwide connections to industry through strategic partnerships, student internships, and extraordinary hands-on learning experiences such as the Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute and the Boeing Scholars program. We play a vital role in the Northwest’s thriving technology industry and help drive economic growth in the region through discovery and innovation.
A Unique Place for Learning
Because of its home on the Palouse, the Voiland College is a close-knit, immersive learning environment dedicated to education. The college provides a microcosm for students to collaborate with fellow students, world-class faculty, and industry leaders. We hold high expectations of excellence while providing a nurturing environment for each student to reach his or her potential. Participating in industry internships or student clubs or working in research labs side-by-side with world class faculty allows for valuable, real-world engineering and design experiences. When they graduate, our students are in high demand.
Leading Research
The Voiland College plays an important role in building the prosperity and economic vitality of our nation, state and region. Our researchers, alumni, and students are working to solve our biggest challenges in energy, the environment, and health. You can see the Voiland College’s important contributions in the development of biofuels for the aviation industry; the smart electric power grid; in new fuel cells, catalytic converters, and operating protocols for industrial energy efficiency; in sustainable wood-composite materials; in air and water quality; in nuclear waste clean-up technologies; and in materials advances for the aerospace industry.
Preparing the Next Generation
We are proud of our land-grant heritage and mission. We have educated countless students and prepared them to be work ready on day one. We teach our students to think, approaching problems systematically, analytically, and creatively. Through classes, labs, and projects, our students develop a persistence to work through complex problems and hone a strong work ethic.
Our tradition of a practical, hands-on education with real-world impact has been our focus from our earliest days. In the face of challenging times, rising tuition costs, and a fast-changing education landscape, the Voiland College remains goal oriented and focused on providing a practical education at an affordable cost with uncompromising excellence.
