Safety Tip of the Week
Keeping Wildfire Smoke Out of Buildings
Facilities Services recently transitioned all allowable buildings into air recirculation mode. This process transitions buildings so they are using more of the building’s own internal air supply, versus bringing air in from outside. Unfortunately not all buildings can be put into recirculation; some buildings (lab buildings) require 100% outside air all the time. Facilities Services will monitor the air filters in the systems and replace them frequently, but that will not completely clear the smell. You can help by:
- Closing exterior windows and doors in buildings to limit the amount of outside air coming in (and bringing smoke with it).
- For those that have fume hoods, when the hoods are not in use, please pull the sashes down. This reduces the amount of outside air they pull into the building. All hoods are equipped with filters, so air quality in the hoods will not be impacted; however, where possible we do want to keep outside air to a minimum.
- Understanding that although a building may be in recirculation mode, you will likely still smell smoke inside of the buildings.
You can monitor Pullman’s air quality. You can also follow the Pacific Northwest’s smoke plume modeling courtesy of our own Laboratory for Atmospheric Research.
