A team of Washington State University and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory researchers has recently found the ideal atomic interaction and the best place to start is the catalytic conversion of lignin, the most abundant plant material on earth, to ingredients for aviation fuels. The work has been published in the journal, Frontiers in Energy Research.

Governor Jay Inslee named Birgitte Ahring the Washingtonian of the Day for her leadership in clean energy biofuels research.

Yong Wang has accepted an associate editor position for the Chemical Engineering Journal.

WSU senior electrical engineering major and Army ROTC cadet Mason Devorak was featured in The Daily Evergreen.

200 students competed in the 10th annual CrimsonCode Hackathon.

Two Washington State University student teams took first place in the recent Associated Schools of Construction competition, the largest construction management competition in the U.S.

Three Minute Thesis – Nominations Due March 3

This year’s VCEA Three Minute Thesis Qualifying Competition will be held Thursday, March 10, 2022 – 2 pm on Zoom. Nominees from each VCEA Ph.D. degree program will represented.

Three Minute Thesis is a research communication competition challenging Ph.D. students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in three minutes or less to a non-technical audience.

Students will be competing for a chance to move on to the WSU-wide competition as well as a $1,500 scholarship for Fall 2022 (first runner-up will receive a $1,000 scholarship and second runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship). Up to $3,000 in additional prize money is up for grabs at the main WSU event.

The President’s Award for Leadership – Nominations Due March 4

Help recognize those who have shown outstanding leadership and service to the WSU community this academic year. The President’s Award for Leadership has been an honor bestowed annually to students, faculty & staff, community organizations, and student organizations that demonstrate exceptional leadership and service to the university and the community as well as to those who support leadership development in WSU students.

LGBTQIA2S+ Faculty/Staff Distinguished Achievement Award – Nominations Due March 4

Nominations are open for the LGBTQIA2S+ Faculty/Staff Distinguished Achievement Award!

The President’s Commission for Gender Identity/Expression and Sexual Orientation (GIESO) is creating a new award to celebrate and honor excellence within the LGBTQIA2S+ community at WSU.

This award demonstrates the institution’s commitment to fostering a more welcoming campus culture and climate and shows LGBTQIA2S+ employees that they are seen and are a valued and vibrant part of the WSU community.

WSU Pullman Strategic Plan Survey – Complete by March 4

The intent of this survey is to gather both your perceptions of the WSU Pullman campus and your vision for the next five years at WSU Pullman to help inform the development of WSU Pullman’s strategic plan.

AFW’s Graduate Student Awards – Nominations Due March 7

Do you know a graduate student or students you would like to nominate for one of the WSU Association of Faculty Women’s three graduate student awards: the Harriett B. Rigas Award, the AFW Founders’ Award, and the Karen DePauw Leadership Award? The awards are non-gender specific.

You can find more information on the awards online, including the nomination form. The nomination deadline is Monday, March 7.

Richard G. Law Excellence Award for Undergraduate Teaching – Apply by March 10

Applications for the next Richard G. Law Excellence Award for Undergraduate Teaching will be accepted through March 10. The Law Award recognizes outstanding teaching by faculty on all campuses who teach courses in the University Common Requirements (UCORE) general education curriculum.

Smith Teaching and Learning Grant – Apply by March 14

Washington State University faculty with innovative ideas to enhance teaching and learning are encouraged to apply by March 14 for a Smith Teaching and Learning Grant of up to $5,000.

WSU Teaching Academy Excellence in Teaching a Large Class Award – Apply by March 15

Washington State University faculty who teach classes of 50 students or more can apply now for the WSU Teaching Academy’s new Award for Excellence in Teaching a Large Class.

Oaks Academic Technology Award – Nominations Due March 22

Nominations are now being accepted for the sixth annual Oaks Academic Technology Award. The self-nominated award recognizes instructors for their innovative application of technology to transform teaching and learning in their classroom (face-to-face, asynchronous online, or videoconferencing).

The winner will receive $3,000 in faculty development funds, distributed to the award winner’s academic department. To apply or learn more about the award, including the evaluation rubric, visit the Oaks award application webpage.

Top Ten Senior Awards – Nominations Due March 25

The Top Ten Senior Awards provide an opportunity for faculty, staff, community members, and other students to nominate a deserving senior for their contributions to Washington State University.

Faculty and staff are often able to recognize when a student is struggling, but it can be hard to know what to say or do. State and federal laws and University policies mandate reporting in some situations. You can reference this guide when you’re concerned about a student. Each WSU location has a guide with specific campus and community resources.
