The Office of the Provost has announced the names of faculty and staff to receive this year’s top WSU honors for scholarship, teaching, service, and community engagement:
- Jennifer Adam received the Faculty Mid-Career Award
- Hakan Gurocak received the V. Lane Rawlins President’s Award for Distinguished Lifetime Service
Congratulations to our newly tenured and/or promoted faculty:
- Alla Kostyukova, Ayad Rahmani, Xiao Zhang were promoted to the rank of Professor:
- Haipeng Cai, Kuen-Ren Chen, Anamika Dubey, and Dustin McLarty were granted tenure and promoted to the rank of Associate Professor:
- Ahmed Abu-Hajar, John Lynch, and Alice Squires were promoted to the rank of Career Track Scholarly Professor
- Gordon Taub and David Thiessen were promoted to the rank of Career Track Scholarly Associate Professor
- Karl Englund was promoted to the rank of Research Professor
- Nandita Biswas was promoted to the rank of Career Track Teaching Associate Professor
- Hongfei Lin was Granted Tenure for Associate Professor
- Yong Wang was promoted to the rank of WSU Regents Professor
On March 8, Anamika Dubey will be a guest on Newcastle Research & Innovation Institute in Singapore (NewRIIS) International Women’s Day panel discussion.
Noel Schulz and Anjan Bose discussed cybersecurity concerns on Northwest Public Broadcasting.
Haipeng Cai received a $500,000 National Science Foundation grant to improve the security and functionality of software programs by helping computer programming languages communicate at the basic level.

March 9: Strategies for Submitting an NSF CAREER Grant
The CAREER grant is the National Science Foundation’s most significant award for early-career faculty. It supports faculty who wish to build a firm foundation for a lifetime as a leader and role model in research and education while advancing the mission of their department or organization.
Come learn more about the CAREER program and how to develop a strategy for successful proposal submission in a session lead by Office of Research Advancement and Partnership’s expert grant writer, Robert Finney PhD. Join us via Zoom on Wednesday, March 9 at 11 a.m.!
APAC Contribution Award – Nominations due March 22
The APAC Contribution Awards recognize administrative professionals who have made exceptional contributions to Washington State University and their respective areas or units.
March 22: Intro to the Kamiak High Performance Computer
On Tuesday, March 22, from 10:10 a.m–1 p.m., The Center for Institutional Research Computing’s (CIRC) will host a hands-on introductory workshop introducing basic High Performance Computing (HPC) concepts including job submission and file transfers. Learn to utilize freely available computing resources on WSU’s Kamiak HPC to power your research! This workshop will be held online; advance registration is required.
Richard G. Law Excellence Award for Undergraduate Teaching – Apply by March 10
Applications for the next Richard G. Law Excellence Award for Undergraduate Teaching will be accepted through March 10. The Law Award recognizes outstanding teaching by faculty on all campuses who teach courses in the University Common Requirements (UCORE) general education curriculum.
Smith Teaching and Learning Grant – Apply by March 14
Washington State University faculty with innovative ideas to enhance teaching and learning are encouraged to apply by March 14 for a Smith Teaching and Learning Grant of up to $5,000.
WSU Teaching Academy Excellence in Teaching a Large Class Award – Apply by March 15
Washington State University faculty who teach classes of 50 students or more can apply now for the WSU Teaching Academy’s new Award for Excellence in Teaching a Large Class.
Oaks Academic Technology Award – Nominations Due March 22
Nominations are now being accepted for the sixth annual Oaks Academic Technology Award. The self-nominated award recognizes instructors for their innovative application of technology to transform teaching and learning in their classroom (face-to-face, asynchronous online, or videoconferencing).
The winner will receive $3,000 in faculty development funds, distributed to the award winner’s academic department. To apply or learn more about the award, including the evaluation rubric, visit the Oaks award application webpage.
Top Ten Senior Awards – Nominations Due March 25
The Top Ten Senior Awards provide an opportunity for faculty, staff, community members, and other students to nominate a deserving senior for their contributions to Washington State University.

WSU’s Community & Equity Certificate is a challenging, personal journey for individuals who are committed to creating welcoming and inclusive environments. To earn the certificate, participants complete seven workshops that span topics such as equity at a land-grant institution, allyship, cultural interaction and communication, and more. Faculty and staff are often able to recognize when a student is struggling, but it can be hard to know what to say or do. State and federal laws and University policies mandate reporting in some situations. You can reference this guide when you’re concerned about a student. Each WSU location has a guide with specific campus and community resources.

Learn how to identify Cougs in crisis and connect them with support by signing up for a training with WSU Health Promotion. Sessions are available for all WSU locations.
