This year, Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture celebrates 10 years of STEM education in the North Puget Sound region.

Aaron Feaver was interviewed by Geekwire about the state of Washington’s hydrogen economy efforts.

A project that introduces behavior-based energy efficiency strategies by interpreting real-time biological and emotional data of a room’s occupant has earned a World Architecture Award for Mona Ghandi.

Jake Leachman was interviewed by WSU Insider about an uncrewed aircraft system powered by liquid hydrogen fuel that made its maiden flight in Eastern Oregon recently, an important step toward a future of using the clean energy source in aviation and other industries and potentially reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

NIH Data Management and Sharing Guidance and Awareness

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) are implementing a new Data Management and Sharing (DMS) policy effective January 25, 2023 (NIH-OD-21-013), requiring researchers to plan prospectively for managing and sharing scientific data generated with NIH funds. This new policy will require a data management and sharing plan for ALL NIH-funded projects, an expansion from the current requirement for projects over $500K in annual direct costs, applying to research funded or conducted by NIH that results in the generation of scientific data.

President’s Award for Safety, Health, and Security – Nominations due Sept. 30

Nominate a deserving Coug for the President’s Award for Safety, Health, or Security. Awards recognize exceptional students, staff, and faculty members throughout the WSU system.

Research Week Oct. 17-21

The Office of Research will host the sixth annual Research Week during October 17-21. Research Week is dedicated to celebrating achievements, building partnerships, and pursuing new opportunities for research at WSU.

This year featured events include a keynote address, matchmaking flash talks and an opportunity to win funding. The Office of Research will announce competition winners and recognize research achievements by faculty and staff during an awards ceremony and reception. All are welcome to come and take advantage of professional development and networking opportunities.

Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research Scholarships, Fellowships, Distinguished Faculty Advancement Grants- Apply by Oct. 20

NRC issued its Fiscal Year 2022 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the University Nuclear Leadership Program for Scholarships, Fellowships, Distinguished Faculty Advancement (previously called faculty development), and Trade School and Community College Scholarship Grant. Applications are due October 22.

Save the Date! Career Expo and VCEA Technical Fair Oct. 3-4

This year’s Career Expo and VCEA Technical Fair will take place on Handshake on Monday October 3 from 3-6 pm, and in-person at Pullman’s Beasley Stadium on Tuesday, October 4 from 12 noon to 4 pm. Please encourage your students to attend.

Be Safe Cougs

Helping a Student in Crisis

Faculty and staff are often able to recognize when a student is struggling, but it can be hard to know what to say or do. Reference your campus guide for specific WSU and community resources to aid a student in distress.

Early intervention is the key to student success. The Student Care Network allows you to share concerns about a student’s emotional or psychological well-being, physical health, or academic performance with colleagues on your campus who can help. When you submit your referral through our online form, an email will be generated, contacting the relevant offices on your campus.

Learn to Support Cougs in Crisis

We can all help support mental health in our campus community. Learn how to identify Cougs in crisis and connect them with support by signing up for a training with WSU Health Promotion. Sessions are available for all WSU locations.

Campus Connect:
This 2-hour suicide prevention training program is offered free of charge for all WSU staff and students. Participants learn: Statistics and facts about college student suicide; How to ask if someone is feeling suicidal; Appropriate referrals; Active listening, communication, and relationship building skills.

Mental Health First Aid:
Participants in this training learn about symptoms, crisis response, and active listening skills to support someone who is experiencing a mental health disorder such as: Depression and anxiety; Trauma; Psychosis; Eating disorders; Substance abuse. Mental Health First Aid is free for WSU Pullman, Global, and Vancouver campus students.

You can join at any time and this program is available for all WSU locations. If you aren’t sure how to respond or who should know about your concerns, Counseling and Psychological Services is available at 509‑335‑4511 and after hours at 509‑335‑2159.
