Harsh Sharma, Jana Doppa and Partha Pande recently received a best paper award at the International Conference on Compilers, Architectures, and Synthesis for Embedded Systems (CASES).

Diane Cook co-authored a recent study that showed that home sensors could provide accurate information about overnight restlessness and sleep problems for people recovering from opioid use disorder.

U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell visited with researchers from AgAID and HyperLab to learn more about how WSU is contributing to the clean energy and artificial intelligence economies.

Jan Boll has been named co-director of the Center for Environmental Research, Education and Outreach (CEREO).

Florence Adesope won a travel grant to participate in the 10th Annual Black Doctoral Network Conference.

TEACHxWSU Conference Oct. 21

The inaugural TEACHxWSU conference will support WSU faculty, teaching assistants, and other educators across the university system to learn about and practice Universal Design for Learning (UDL).

What is UDL? Experts describe that the principles of UDL form a “framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how people learn” (CAST). UDL guidelines provide both theoretical and practical foundations of research across education, including the exploration of diverse populations. They also offer suggestions that can be applied to any discipline or domain to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful learning opportunities.

Finding Funding with Pivot Oct. 27

Office of Research Advancement and Partnership‘s Pivot expert, Emily Brashear, will help you set up notifications, track funding opportunities, find collaborators, and share opportunities with your coworkers. $16,000 GEM Fellowship Program – Apply Today

Graduate Engineering for Minorities (GEM) offers MS and Ph.D. level students an outstanding opportunity and access to dozens of the top Engineering and Science firms and Universities in the nation. The GEM Fellowship was designed to focus on promoting opportunities for individuals to enter industry at the graduate level in areas such as research and development, product development, and other high level technical careers. GEM also offers exposure to a number of opportunities in academia.

GPSA Dissertation Grant – Apply Today

The Awards and Scholarships Committee offers dissertation grants to support the research needs of WSU Ph.D. students. These grants will be awarded on a rolling basis to help cover expenses generated as students work to complete their dissertation projects.

Voiland College Student Ambassador Program– Apply by Nov. 11

Student Ambassadors educate visitors about student campus life, traditions, achievements through tours, presentations and other events. These positions are paid an hourly rate during training and activities. Application information is due by November 11. Email lisa_hill@wsu.edu with a request for more details.

WSU Launches STEM Writing Skills Program

A new program aimed at helping undergraduate students in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) courses improve their writing skills has been launched at Washington State University.

WriteSTEM is open to all students, and participants will have access to writing web tools and instructional videos online, in addition to one-on-one time with peer coaches.

National Science Foundation Entrepreneurial Fellowships – Apply Now

The National Science Foundation announced a new $20 million investment in Entrepreneurial Fellowships through a multi-year cooperative agreement with Activate.org. The Activate Fellows supported by NSF will be scientists and engineers from a variety of backgrounds and regions across the U.S. who will translate research breakthroughs to new products and services with broad societal benefits.

Research Week Oct. 17-21

The Office of Research will host the sixth annual Research Week during October 17-21. Research Week is dedicated to celebrating achievements, building partnerships, and pursuing new opportunities for research at WSU.

This year featured events include a keynote address, matchmaking flash talks and an opportunity to win funding. The Office of Research will announce competition winners and recognize research achievements by faculty and staff during an awards ceremony and reception. All are welcome to come and take advantage of professional development and networking opportunities.

NRC issued its Fiscal Year 2022 Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the University Nuclear Leadership Program for Scholarships, Fellowships, Distinguished Faculty Advancement (previously called faculty development), and Trade School and Community College Scholarship Grant. Applications are due October 22.

Parking Changes on Oct. 27

Those who regularly park their vehicles on the Pullman campus may need to consider alternative arrangements on Thursday, Oct. 27, due to WSU’s home football game.

Cyber Security Awareness Training- Complete by Jan. 31

Following updates to university Executive Policy, all active WSU employees, including faculty, student employees, and temporary hourly, are required to complete annual cyber security awareness training by Jan. 31, 2023. Visit Human Resource Service’s new learning platform Skillsoft Percipio to complete cyber security awareness training.

The Safety and Wellness Expo connects you with great ideas and supportive resources, so you can live a healthier, safer, more fulfilling life.

Coug Mobile-Based Mental Health Services for All Students

WSU is proud to launch a new suite of mobile-based mental health resources for students. They now have easy access to mental health professionals, self-help tools, and other forms of support. It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, and is free for all students on all campuses.

Monkeypox Vaccines Available for Pullman Students

The monkeypox vaccine is available at Cougar Health Services (CHS), and students in impacted populations are encouraged to get the vaccine. CHS also has testing for monkeypox and can help identify the proper course of treatment for those who contract it.

Faculty and staff are asked to share this information with students, especially those in populations currently eligible to receive a vaccine, and encourage them to get vaccinated and seek testing and treatment if they have symptoms.

More information about the vaccine, testing, and treatment is available on the CHS website. Students can schedule vaccines through their patient portal or by calling CHS at 509‑335‑3575.

Faculty and staff seeking monkeypox vaccination and/or treatment for themselves can find more information on the Washington State Department of Health website.
