A Washington State University student team won first place in the Spokane Mayor’s Cup cybersecurity competition. The WSU CyberCougs team consisted of computer science students Guinevere Fish, Alex Hagood, William Heinecke, Zachary Werle, and Erick Pairault.

Almost 200 students from around the U.S. had the chance to work on two challenges for the agricultural industry as part of the NSF/USDA-NIFA-funded AgAID Institute’s Digital Agathon.

A microbial culture developed from the kangaroo feces inhibited methane production in a cow stomach simulator in a Washington State University study co-authored by Birgitte Ahring – a discovery that might help provide a solution to the environmental problem of cow-produced methane.

Washington State University has been named a founding Affiliated American University in SIREUS, a structured platform for knowledge exchange and increased talent mobility of students and researchers between Sweden and the U.S. in the areas of innovation, research, and entrepreneurship.

Voiland College Strategic Plan Survey – Complete by Feb. 17

VCEA’s Strategic Planning Committee is nearing the completion of our strategic plan and seeks your input to help identify the best outcomes, objectives, and milestones the college should utilize to meet our goals.

Please take a few moments to complete this survey and provide your feedback on Voiland College’s 2023-2028 Strategic Plan. The survey closes Friday, Feb. 17.

SURCA 2023 Applications Open to Undergraduates Through Feb. 21

Washington State University undergraduates can submit abstracts through Feb. 21 to present their research, scholarships, and creative activities on March 27 at the 2023 Showcase for Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (SURCA).

VCEA Convocation – Nominations Due Feb. 24

We are excited for the 2023 Voiland College Convocation, to be held this year on Friday April 14, from 3-5 pm in the CUB Senior Ballroom.

At VCEA Convocation, Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture will honor staff, students, and faculty who epitomize the highest levels of excellence in the pursuit of the college’s mission and goals. Talk with your director or chair about your department’s nomination process and submit your nomination by February 24.

Association for Faculty Women Graduate Student Awards – Nominations Due March 1

The Association for Faculty Women’s Outstanding Graduate Student Awards recognize the academic achievements and professional potential of WSU’s graduate students. Nominees need no affiliation with the AFW to be nominated. Students of all gender identities may be nominated. Nominations are due March 1.

LGBTQ+ Faculty/Staff Distinguished Achievement Award – Nominations Due March 5

The President’s Commission for Gender Identity/Expression and Sexual Orientation (GIESO) is accepting nominations for an award to celebrate and honor excellence within the LGBTQ+ community at WSU.

VCEA Three-Minute Thesis – Nominations Due March 3

The 3MT research communication competition challenges graduate students to present a compelling oration on their thesis and its significance in just three minutes- and using just one visual slide- in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. The first, second and third prize winners will receive $1500, $1000, and $500 respectively towards a VCEA fall 2023 scholarship.

The VCEA 3MT competition will be held on Friday, March 10 at 2 pm, and nominations are due March 3.

IDEA Grants – Apply by March 13

Washington State University faculty seeking to innovate and to promote issues of inclusion, diversity, equity, and access (IDEA) in undergraduate teaching and learning can apply between Jan. 15 and March 13, for two grants from the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice President. The awards are the Smith Teaching and Learning Grant and the Transformational Change Initiative (TCI) Grant for Advancing IDEA.

Top Ten Senior Awards – Nominations Due March 24

The Top Ten Senior Awards provide an opportunity for faculty, staff, community members, and other students to nominate a deserving senior for their contributions to Washington State University. Nominations must be received by March 24.

March 29 – Future Net-Zero Innovators (FuNZI) of the Mountain West Student Symposium

Boise State University, Idaho State University and University of Idaho are hosting an in-person student symposium for undergraduate and graduate students from across the Mountain West who have an interest in carbon neutrality. The student symposium will take place March 29th-31st in Idaho Falls, Idaho at the Center for Advanced Energy Studies.

Undergraduate and graduate students are invited to prepare a poster and/or presentation. Prizes will be awarded for Best Poster, Best Presentation, Best Speaker and other categories! Application deadline is Feb. 17.

Oaks Academic Technology Award – Nominations Due March 28

Nominations are now being accepted for the Oaks Academic Technology Award. The self-nominated award recognizes instructors for their innovative application of technology to transform teaching and learning in their classroom (face-to-face, asynchronous online, or videoconferencing).

The winner will receive $3,000 in faculty development funds, distributed to the award winner’s academic department. To apply or learn more about the award, including the evaluation rubric, visit the Oaks award application webpage.

WSU Alumni Association Award – Nominations Due April 7

Deadline extended! The WSUAA is now accepting award nominations to recognize WSU alumni, faculty/staff, students, volunteers, and friends whose hard work and dedication make Washington State University and our Alumni Association the best organizations in the world!

Washington State University is now requiring annual ethics training for all of its employees systemwide. The training is available on Percipio, the HRS training platform

GPSA Dissertation Grant – Apply Today

The Awards and Scholarships Committee offers dissertation grants to support the research needs of WSU Ph.D. students. These grants will be awarded on a rolling basis to help cover expenses generated as students work to complete their dissertation projects.
