A research team led by Annie Du received a four-year, $1.9 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to develop an inexpensive paper sensor that can rapidly provide information on a person’s smoke exposure during wildfire season.

Kitana Kaiphanlaim, Bernie Van Wie, Bill Davis, Eric Barrow, Brenden Fraser-Hevlin, and Zakora Moore have developed a minifridge-sized bioreactor that is able to rapidly grow cancer-killing white blood cells. Their work was reported in The Spokesman-Review.

Kacey Beddoes won the European Journal of Engineering Education’s Best Paper Award.

Xianming Shi was interviewed by The Seattle Times about the local impact of the decline of people pursuing careers in civil engineering.

Kavin Chakravarthy Thangaraj recently took the top award for his poster presentation at the annual Pacific Northwest Chapter of the American Vacuum Society conference.

Schweitzer Engineering Hall’s design-build process was featured in the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce.

CougStarter – Support Student Clubs – Ends Nov. 15

Every year, WSU students have the opportunity to fundraise for the projects and causes that matter most to them through the WSU Foundation’s CougStarter Campaign. This year, several Voiland College clubs are participating.

WSU Enrollment Summit Nov. 1–2

Summit topics will range from recruitment, data, financial aid, technology, national trends, retention and the state of higher education in the enrollment context.

PNNL-WSU Distinguished Graduate Research Program – Priority Deadline Nov. 5

Applications are now open for the The PNNL-WSU Distinguished Graduate Research Program, which has a priority deadline of Nov 5 (hard deadline Feb 4).

Employee Excellence Award – Nominations Due Dec. 6

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023–24 President’s Employee Excellence Awards. The award is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions by WSU administrative professionals and classified employees. Award recipients each receive $2,500 and will be recognized at the annual Showcase event to be held in the spring of 2024.

Required Safety Training

WSU employees are critical to ensuring WSU is compliant with state and federal laws and regulations. Educating ourselves on our compliance obligations creates a safer and fairer community for everyone. To this end, employees are required to take the following trainings:

  • Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct Prevention (annually)
  • Hazing Prevention Training
  • Ethics in Public Service (annually)
  • Safety Training for WSU Employees—Part 1
  • Safety Training for WSU Employees—Part 2
  • ITS—Cyber Security Awareness Training

To access these trainings, visit Human Resource Services’ Percipio compliance platform and select your assigned trainings: HRS Percipio.
