Be Safe Cougs

Helping a Student in Crisis

Faculty and staff are often able to recognize when a student is struggling, but it can be hard to know what to say or do. Reference your campus guide for specific WSU and community resources to aid a student in distress.

Early intervention is the key to student success. The Student Care Network allows you to share concerns about a student’s emotional or psychological well-being, physical health, or academic performance with colleagues on your campus who can help. When you submit your referral through our online form, an email will be generated, contacting the relevant offices on your campus.

Wildfire Smoke

Air quality in various locations statewide may begin to deteriorate due to wildfire smoke. WSU campuses as well as research and extension centers could be affected. For general information go to the Environmental Health & Safety’s Wildfire Smoke page. This page provides information on the health effects of wildfire smoke, and links to various air quality websites including links to Washington Department of Ecology and Department of Health websites with updated air quality information and appropriate precautions.

If you have further questions please contact Environmental Health & Safety at 509‑335‑3041, your regional campus Environmental Health & Safety office or your local Health Department.

Where is the First-Aid Kit?

Do you know where the first aid kit is in your office? Do you know how to report a workplace accident? Do you know what to do in case of a fire or an earthquake? Be prepared and review Voiland College’s safety policies, training, procedures, and resources with your team.

Outdoor Heat Exposure

The Department of Labor and Industries updated Outdoor Heat Exposure requirements, with new rules becoming effective July 17. The rules apply to all employees working outdoors for 15 minutes or more in a 60‑minute period once temperatures reach 80 degrees. To review the new requirements, see EH&S’ Heat Exposure web page. See also EH&S’ Accident Prevention Plan web page for revisions to the Outdoor Heat Exposure chapter.
