School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science researchers recently received a best paper award at the International Conference on Hardware/Software Codesign and System Synthesis at ACM/IEEE Embedded Systems Week (ESWEEK). WSU PhD student Harsh Sharma was lead author on the paper and worked with Partha Pande, Jana Doppa, and Ananth Kalyanaraman.

Voiland College students and faculty, including Marwa Aly, Devon McCornack, Konstantin Matveev, Carlos Venegas, and Charles Ludwig received $160,000 in funding in the recent Cougar Cage competition.

WSU’s Energy Conscious Construction undergraduate and graduate certificate programs have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Energy with the Zero Energy Design Designation.

The U.S. Department of Energy has selected the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Association’s hydrogen hub for award negotiations as one of seven clean hydrogen hubs nationwide. Washington State University was instrumental in the creation of the Pacific Northwest Hydrogen Hub proposal and will play key roles in the formation of the region’s green hydrogen economy by leading the Hub’s community benefits plan and by connecting hydrogen producers and consumers through WSU’s CHARGE consortium.

Graduate student Priya Kushram received a Diamond Award at the recent Materials Science and Technology meeting. Graduate student Aditi Dahiya also won the 3rd prize at the general graduate student poster competition.

Jake Leachman has been selected to receive the 2023 WSU Technology with an Impactful Contribution to Society Award, for his contributions to the field of cryogenic hydrogen research and its applications. He will be recognized at the Research Excellence Awards Ceremony on October 20.

John McCloy was a panelist in Seattle Fusion Week, speaking about engineering needs in fusion. This event joined fusion energy startup companies, elected officials, research institutions, NGOs and educational institutions for presentations, discussions, and networking.

WSU Insider featured a story on the course Landscapes of the Palouse, which was developed that included Jolie Kaytes and Phil Gruen.

$2500 Frank Engineering and Entrepreneurship Scholars – Apply by Oct. 29

WSU’s Harold Frank Engineering Entrepreneurship Institute is a multidisciplinary program made up of junior and senior engineering, communications, and business students who are interested in technological entrepreneurship. Working in interdisciplinary teams, students learn to manage uncertainty, design, perfect their presentation skills, work with real fiscal and technical constraints, and develop technologies to solve real problems.

PNNL-WSU Distinguished Graduate Research Program – Priority Deadline Nov. 5

Applications are now open for the The PNNL-WSU Distinguished Graduate Research Program, which has a priority deadline of Nov 5 (hard deadline Feb 4).

New Faculty Seed Grant Info Session Oct. 17

The Office of Research and Office of the Provost support the annual New Faculty Seed Grants to help junior faculty develop research, scholarly, or creative programs that lead to sustained professional development and extramural funding. This program supports projects that will significantly contribute to the PI’s long-range goals by kick-starting a more complex project or idea. Projects with a strong potential to lead to significant external funding and/or PI portfolio development are encouraged. Awards may not exceed $25,000.

The 2024 application cycle begins Nov. 1. A notice of intent is required and must be submitted by 5 p.m. Dec. 1 in order to be considered for this program. Full proposals are due Feb. 9 by 5 p.m. Join us via Zoom to learn more about the program on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 10 a.m.

Transfer Student-Centered Events Planned for Oct. 16–20

All current and prospective Washington State University students who have earned college credits at another institution are invited to workshops, a presentation, and even a paint-and-sip (a caffeinated beverage) de-stressing session in celebration of National Transfer Student Week Oct. 16–20.

WSU Research Week Oct. 16-20

The Office of Research will host its seventh annual Research Week from Oct. 16–20 with events planned across the Washington State University system. Research Week is dedicated to celebrating achievements, building partnerships, and pursuing new opportunities for research, scholarship, and creative activity at WSU.

This year’s events will be hosted on the WSU Pullman, WSU Spokane, WSU Tri-Cities, WSU Vancouver, and WSU Everett campuses. Participants will be able to attend many of the events virtually via Zoom.

TEACHxWSU Oct. 20

Washington State University faculty, teaching staff, and graduate students are invited to register by Wednesday, Oct. 11, for the second annual TEACHxWSU set for Friday, Oct. 20, with the theme of “Equity and Inclusion in Higher Education.” A morning keynote address and several afternoon sessions are offered in-person at WSU Pullman as well as virtually for participants system-wide.

WSU Enrollment Summit, Nov. 1–2

Summit topics will range from recruitment, data, financial aid, technology, national trends, retention and the state of higher education in the enrollment context.

Employee Excellence Award – Nominations Due Dec. 6

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023–24 President’s Employee Excellence Awards. The award is presented annually to recognize outstanding contributions by WSU administrative professionals and classified employees. Award recipients each receive $2,500 and will be recognized at the annual Showcase event to be held in the spring of 2024.
